  • Load Duration Curve (LDC) can be used as a method for load management of point and non-point pollution source because the LDC easily assesses the water quality corresponding to hydrological changes in a watershed. Recently, the application of LDC to total pollution load management is a growing interest in Korea. In this regard, A desktop-based LDC assessment system was developed in this study to provide convenience to users in water quality evaluation. The developed system can simply produce the LDC by using streamflow and water quality data involved in its database. Also, The system can quantitatively inform the success or failure of the achievement for a target water quality at monthly scale. Furthermore, seasonal water quality and point/non-point pollution load in a watershed can be estimated by this system. We expect that the developed system will contribute to establish local and national policies regarding water management and total pollution load management because of its advantages such as the pollution tracking investigation and the analysis of water quality and pollution loading amount in an ungauged watershed.

  • Regionalization technique using flow duration curve and spatial interpolation algorithm is developed for the purpose of estimating daily flow time series at ungauged station. In this study, we assumed a part of 8 gauging stations of Nakdong River basin as ungauged stations. Then, we generated flow duration curves and daily flow hydrographs by regionalization technique at ungauged stations. And we compared generated and observed hydrographs. The simulation results showed that the observed flows were well simulated by the proposed method and that the general patterns of the observed flows were satisfactorily reproduced by the regionalization technique. From these results, it is possible that we obtain daily flow information without application of labour intensive and time consuming deterministic models, which require complicating quantification of model parameter values. And we compared the regionalization techniques with the specific discharge method which is the most general approach in hydrological practice in Korea. The results showed that the regionalization technique was superior to specific discharge method.method.

  • The continuous long-term rainfall-runoff simulation model SWAT has the advantage of being able to account for various land use, however, SWAT lacks the capability of simulating the drainage characteristics of urban area. On the other hand, SWMM, which is the most popular model for runoff analysis of urban watershed, has the advantage of being capable of considering surface and drainage characteristics in urban area, but SWMM cannot easily account for land use other than urban area within a watershed. In this study, SWAT-SWMM model, which builds on the strengths of SWAT and SWMM, has been applied to the Osan River Watershed which is a tributary watershed to the Gyung-Ahn River. From the application, the results from coupled SWAT-SWMM model has been compared to the ones from SWAT for each hydrologic component such as evapotranspiration, surface runoff, groundwater flow, and watershed and channel discharge, and the runoff characteristics of two models for each hydrologic component has been discussed.

  • A grid based physically distributed model analyzes rainfall-runoff using physical parameters and grid-typed spatial and hydrological data. This study have developed a real time runoff modelling system using GRM RT(Grid based Rainfall-runoff Model Real Time) which is a real time flow analysis module in GRM, a grid based physically distributed rainfall-runoff model. Weather radar data received in real time are calibrated by using real time AWS from Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA), and they are applied to real time runoff modeling. And the runoff model is calibrated by using observed discharges from a water level gauge in real time. This study have designed and implemented the databases necessary to construct the real time runoff modelling system, and established the process of a real time runoff modelling. And the performances of the developed system have been evaluated. The system have been applied to Nerinheon watershed located in the upstream of Soyanggang Dam and the application results are evaluated.

  • The model using time series data can be considered as a flood forecasting model of a small river due to its efficiency for model development and the advantage of rapid simulation for securing predicted time when reliable data are obtained. Transfer Function Noise (TFN) model has been applied hourly flood forecast in Italy, and UK since 1970s, while it has mainly been used for long-term simulations in daily or monthly basis in Korea. Recently, accumulating hydrological data with good quality have made it possible to simulate hourly flood prediction. The purpose of this study is to assess the TFN model applicability that can reflect exogenous variables by combining dynamic system and error term to reduce prediction error for tributary rivers. TFN model with hourly data had better results than result from Storage Function Model (SFM), according to the flood events. And it is expected to expand to similar sized streams in the future.

  • The concepts of residence time and flushing time can be used to explain the exchange and transport of water or materials in a coastal sea. The application of these transport time scales are widespread in biological, hydrological, and geochemical studies. The water quality of the system crucially depends on the residence time and flushing time of a particle in the system. In this study, the residence and flushing time in Gamak Bay were calculated using the numerical model, EFDC, which includes a particle tracking module. The average residence time was 55 days in the inner bay, and the flushing time for Gamak Bay was about 44.8 days, according to the simulation. This means that it takes about 2 months for land and aquaculture generated particles to be transported out of Gamak Bay, which can lead to substances accumulating in the bay. These results show the relationships between the transport time scale and physical the properties of the embayment. The findings of this study will improves understanding of the water and material transport processes in Gamak Bay and will be important when assessing the potential impact of coastal development on water quality conditions.

  • This studies were conducted to derive synthetic unitgraphs and triangular unitgraphs correlated with watershed characteristics which can be used to the estimation and control of flood for the rational development of Agricultural water resources. Derived Synthetic unitgraphs and Triangular unitgraphs can be applied to the ungaged watersheds were compared with average unitgraphs by observed data. Seven small watersheds were selected as studying basins Han, Geum, Nakdong, Yeongsan and Inchon river system. The results summarized for these studies are as follows: 1. Average unitgraphs by observed data and dimensionless unitgraphs for synthesis were derived for all river systems. 2. Peak discharge per unit area of the unitgraph, qp, was derived as qp=10-0.389-0.0424Lg with a high significance. 3. Formulas for the base width of unitgraph of 50 and 75 percent for peak flow for each water systems was adopted as Table 5. 4. The base length of the unitgraph, Tb, in hours in connection with time to peak, Tp, in hours was expressed as Tb =4.3Tp. 5. Peak discharge, Qp, were obtained as Table 6 by the Triangular form to all subwatersheds. 6. Relative errors in the peak discharge of the synthetic unitgraphs showed to be 7.3 percent to the peak of observed average unitgraphs except errors of peak discharge for Yeongsan river system. This indicates that Synthetic unitgraphs for the small watersheds of Han, Geum, Nakdong and Inchon river systems can be applied to the ungaged watersheds. On the other hand, It was confirmed that the accuracy of Instantaneous Unit Hydrograph with only 1.6 percent as relative errors was approaching more closely to the observed average unitgraph than that of synthetic unitgraph with relative errors. 23.9 percent for Yeongsan river system. 7. Errors in the peak discharge of the triangular unitgraph to the observed average unitgraph showed to be 0.6 percent to 7.5 percent which can be regarded as a high precision within the range of 200 to 500$\textrm{km}^2$ in area. On the contrary, application of triangular unitgraph within the range of 200$\textrm{km}^2$ in area has defined as a unsuitable method because of high relative errors, 26.4 percent to 61.6 percent.

  • This study is to delineate the watershed hydrological parameters such as area, slope, rain gauge weight, NRCS-CN and time of concentration (Tc) by using the Geographic Information Sytem (GIS) technique, and estimation of design flood for an ungauged watershed. Especially, we attempted to determine the Tc of ungauged watershed and develop simple program using the cell-based algorithm to calculates upstream or downstream flow time along a flow path for each cell. For a $19km^2$ watershed of tributary of Nakdong river (Seupmoon), the parameters including flow direction, flow accumulation, watershed boundary, stream network and Tc map were extracted from 30m Agreeburn DEM (Digital Elevation Model) and landcover map. And NRCS-CN was extracted from 30m landcover map and soil map. Design rainfall estimation for two rainfall gauge which are Sunsan and Jangcheon using FARD2006 that developed by National Institute for Disaster Prevention (NIDP). Using the parameters as input data of HEC-l model, the design flood was estimated by applying Clark unit hydrograph method. The results showed that the design flood of 50 year frequency of this study was $8m^3/sec$ less than that of the previous fundamental plan in 1994. The value difference came from the different application of watershed parameter, different rainfall distribution (Huff quartile vs. Mononobe) and critical durations. We could infer that the GIS-based parameter preparation is more reasonable than the previous hand-made extraction of watershed parameters.

  • The main objective of this study is to determine the time distribution models of rainfall in Korea for estimating design floods and to suggest new runoff model(Geomorphologic Instantaneous Unit Hydrograph; GIUH) in order to be easily use the rainfall-runoff model put rainfall models practice to be suitable for the regional characteristics of hydrologic situation by practicing engineers. As a result, the reappearance of triangular hyetograph and GIUH runoff model showed promising. The historical data from about 13,000 event-rainfalls and 73 rainfall-runoff measuring data during 12 years in International Hydrological Program (IHP) basins have been used to determine the statistical factors of the time distribution for rainfalls by the Yen-Chow, Huff, Pilgrim-Cordery and Mononobe models. The Rational, Kajiyama, Nakayasu and Clark model and GIUH model that this study runoff model were used for the purpose of application limit for basin area against design concept by the estimation of flood runoff and the derivation of empirical equations to estimate the parameters for ungaged basins.
