  • Surface water-groundwater interaction (SWGI) is an important hydrological process that influences both the quantity and quality of water resources. However, regional scale SWGI model calibration and uncertainty analysis have been a challenge because integrated models inherently carry a vast number of parameters, modeling assumptions, and inputs, potentially leaving little time and budget to explore questions related to model performance and forecasting. In this study, we have proposed the application of iterative ensemble smoother (IES) for uncertainty analysis and calibration of the widely used integrated surface-subsurface model, SWAT-MODFLOW. SWAT-MODFLOW integrates Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and a three-dimensional finite difference model (MODFLOW). The model was calibrated using a parameter estimation tool (PEST). The major advantage of the employed IES is that the number of model runs required for the calibration of an ensemble is independent of the number of adjustable parameters. The pilot point approach was followed to calibrate the aquifer parameters, namely hydraulic conductivity, specific storage, and specific yield. The parameter estimation process for the SWAT model focused primarily on surface-related parameters. The uncertainties both in the streamflow and groundwater level were assessed. The work presented provides valuable insights for future endeavors in coupled surface-subsurface modeling, data collection, model development, and informed decision-making.

  • In order to estimate parameter uncertainty of hydrological models, the consideration of the likelihood functions which provide reliable parameters of model is necessary. In this study, the Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method with informal likelihood functions is used to analyze the uncertainty of parameters of the SURR model for estimating the hourly streamflow of Gunnam station of Imjin basin, Korea. Three events were used to calibrate and one event was used to validate the posterior distributions of parameters. Moreover, the performance of four informal likelihood functions (Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency, Normalized absolute error, Index of agreement, and Chiew-McMahon efficiency) on uncertainty of parameter is assessed. The indicators used to assess the uncertainty of the streamflow simulation were P-factor (percentage of observed streamflow included in the uncertainty interval) and R-factor (the average width of the uncertainty interval). The results showed that the sensitivities of parameters strongly depend on the likelihood functions and vary for different likelihood functions. The uncertainty bounds illustrated the slight differences from various likelihood functions. This study confirms the importance of the likelihood function selection in the application of Bayesian MCMC to the uncertainty assessment of the SURR model.

  • A recent increase in extreme weather events and flash floods associated with the enhanced climate variability results in an increase in climate-related disasters. For these reasons, various studies based on a high resolution weather radar system have been carried out. The weather radar can provide estimates of precipitation in real-time over a wide area, while ground-based rain gauges only provides a point estimate in space. Weather radar is thus capable of identifying changes in rainfall structure as it moves through an ungauged basin. However, the advantage of the weather radar rainfall estimates has been limited by a variety of sources of uncertainty in the radar reflectivity process, including systematic and random errors. In this study, we developed an ensemble radar rainfall estimation scheme using the multivariate copula method. The results presented in this study confirmed that the proposed ensemble technique can effectively reproduce the rainfall statistics such as mean, variance and skewness (more importantly the extremes) as well as the spatio-temporal structure of rainfall fields.

  • Information on radar rainfall with high spatio-temporal resolution over large areas has been used to mitigate climate-related disasters such as flash floods. On the other hand, a well-known problem associated with the radar rainfall using the Marshall-Palmer relationship is the underestimation. In this study, we develop a new bias correction scheme based on the quantile regression method. This study employed a bivariate copula function method for the joint simulation between radar and ground gauge rainfall data to better characterize the error distribution. The proposed quantile regression based bias corrected rainfall showed a good agreement with that of observed. Moreover, the results of our case studies suggest that the copula function approach was useful to functionalize the error distribution of radar rainfall in an effective way.

  • Since the national land area is small and the fanning land occupies only 24% of total land area in Korea, the promotion of agricultural productivity is urgent. In this process, the application rate of chemical fertilizer, which is the major pollution factor at agricultural non-point sources, has been increasing in every year. The present study examined difference of runoff loading of nitrogen and phosphorus by rainfall intensity(above 100mm, 80-100mm, 50-80mm and 30-50mm). Runoff loading of nitrogen and phosphorus by rainfall intensity has differences under similar rainfall intensity. We are considering that these results were affected by rainfall intensity as well as hydrological condition, soil management, whether or not fertilizer application, cropping, rice straw and plowing.

  • Drought is defined by differently for the several scientific and technical fields such as hydrological drought, agricultural drought, meteorological drought, climatological drought, atmospheric drought. A lot of drought indices have been developed to quantify drought severity levels. However these drought indices might be expressed differently as the drought conditions for specific period because the drought severity level is using different types of data on each condition. It is necessary for development of quantative drought representation methods by drought index application. In this research, the reaction to the historical droughts is analyzed after estimation of PDSI, SPI and MSWSI(Modified Surface Water Supply Index) in south korean territory. Lastly the drought representation methods were examiner combining the drought indices by drought indices. The arithmetic mean drought indices that include PDSI, SPI, in yearly basis from 1971 to 2001 and MSWSI in yearly basis from 1974 to 2001 were estimated through the whole nation. The applicability of drought indices are examined based on the observed drought data for national and regional droughts. The result shows that PDSI, SPI(3), SPI(6), and MSWSI have proven to be sensitive enough to the historical drought. The correlation analysis of each drought index was conducted whether they could show the long and short term drought equally. The analysis of how appropriately represent for the historical drought was used for determining for the combined drought index. Consequently, PDSI, SPI(3), SPI(6), and MSWSI have been appeared as suitable indices for the development of quantitative drought representation methods. For the decision of weight on combining PDSI, SPI(3), SPI(6), and MSWSI, drought map was made for eighteen alternative to decide weight. The results showed that PDSI(20%), SPI(3)(60%), SPI(6)(10%), and MSWSI(10%) have been the most well matched weights. Using selected weights of each drought indices and by reconstructing the national mean drought severity on yearly basis, the fact that the year of historical drought is in accordance with the verified one for drought representation. In short, the acquired technique using combined drought index can be used for useful and believable quantitative method of drought analysis.

  • A multiple box model which is suitable for the prediction of water quality in shallow lakes with active mixing is a water quality model expected to be used widely in estuary reservoir. In this study, a multiple box water quality model for estuary reservoirs (MBQER) was developed arid the applicability of the MBQER was tested by applying data obtained from Asan-estuary reservoir. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. The MBQER, dynamic water quality model, was developed to estimate 10-day water qualities of estuary reservoirs. For the proper analysis and the application of hydraulics needed to build a model, lake hydraulics was simplified by condisering only hydrological inflow and lake mixing currents. The box division in the MBQER is longitudinal one dimension for upper and middle part, and two layers for lower part of the reservoir. 2. The methods of box division for the multiple box model were ekamined and applied to Asan-estuary reservoir. For determining the number of boxes, Pe number and Pk number were used. In case of three boxes, the error by the model simplification would be estimated about 5 % Therefore, in Asan reservoir, the proper number of boxes was three. 3. The MBQER was calibrated and verified using measured data in Asan-estuary reservoir from 1986 to 1988. The Root Mean Squares(RMS) for the differences between measured data and simulated results by the MBQER were 1.10$^{\circ}$C C for water temperature, 75.8mg/1 for salinity, 0.082mg/1 for total-phosphorus showing good estimations. 4. Through the simulation of water temperature and salinity by the MBQER, the exchange flow and the mixing coefficients for the estuary lake were determined. As a result of simulation, the horizontal mixing coefficients in Asan-estuary reservoir were in the range of 1.07X 105 to 1.12X 105 cm$^2$/sec and vertical mixing coefficient was 2.90X 10-1 cm$^2$/sec.

  • The subject of this paper is research into the application of resistivity/SP monitoring to detecting the water leakage of water utilization facilities. For this purpose, we installed a comprehensive monitoring system consisting of resistivity/SP measurement, inclinometer, piezometer, and water gauge at an embankment, Using this monitoring system, we monitored the various kinds of measurement data and compared the resistivity structures and SP variations that of hydrological and engineering data in order to investigate the water leakage and stability of the embankment. The variations of resistivity and SP at the embankment were provided from the monitoring data and we could accurately locate the portions of which resistivities and SP have sharply changed, Furthermore, we could estimate the stability of the embankment more effectively and quantitatively by jointly interpreting the monitoring data of resistivity and SP, water level, pore water pressure, and subsurface displacement. The monitoring experiments in this study led us to the conclusion that for the efficient maintenance of the water utilization facilities, monitoring the resistivity and SP data would be much more preferable to performing the just one-time measurements.

  • Dam construction in a river can change its hydrological pattern and trap sediments, which results in ecological changes in the downstream. It is a common phenomenon in the downstream of dams to have decreased sediment flow and increased periphyton. Artificial floods and sediment application are suggested as mitigation practices in order to simulate natural process of flood; transporting sediment and sloughing periphyton off. In this study the effects of artificial floods on periphyton were examined by applying sand artificially and discharging water from a dam (Yangyang Dam, Korea). The study area has been suffering from turbidity problems caused by shore erosion of the dam. The accumulation of inorganic sediments and increase of periphyton on the river bottom are the major factors of habitat deterioration in the downstream reaches. Artificial flood and artificial addition of sand was performed in summer and the effects were measured. Piles of applied sands were washed off easily by discharge and it enhanced the periphyton sloughing effect. The removal efficiency of periphyton was 50 ~ 80% within the 2 km reach from the dam. In conclusion artificial floods and sand application can be a good mitigation measure for the habitat rehabilitation after a dam construction in streams.
