  • This paper presents a study on the hydrogen embrittlement of Ti-6Al-4V alloys with different microstructures depending on annealing treatment. They were electrochemically charged with hydrogen and subjected to tensile tests to investigate hydrogen embrittlement behavior. Tensile test results showed that the elongation of Ti-6Al-4V alloy specimens was remarkably decreased with increasing the volume fraction of β phase after hydrogen charging. This is because the β phase with a relatively low diffusivity tends to easily form a hydride at grain boundaries during electrochemical hydrogen charging. After hydrogen charging of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy specimen, it found that silver particles were decorated mostly at the grain boundary, and coarser silver particles were usually formed in the specimen annealed at 950 ℃. Therefore, the specimen having higher β phase fraction shows a poor hydrogen embrittlement resistance because the β phase promotes the formation of coarse hydride during electrochemical hydrogen charging, which leads to a large decrease in ductility.

  • The alloys which compositions were represented by the formula, $Ti_{(0.22+X)}Cr_{(0.28+1.5X)}V_{(0.5-2.5X)}$ ($0{\leq}X{\leq}0.12$), had the total hydrogen storage capacity higher than 3 wt% and the effective hydrogen storage capacity higher than 1.4 wt%. Particularly, among all the tested alloys, the $Ti_{0.32}Cr_{0.43}V_{0.25}$ alloy exhibited the best effective hydrogen storage capacity of 1.65 wt%. Furthermore, the reversible bcc${\leftrightarrow}$fcc structural transition was observed with hydrogenation and dehydrogenation, which predicted the possibility of pressure cycling. EDS analysis revealed micro-segregation, which suggested the necessity of microstructure homogenization by heat treatment. The $Ti_{0.32}Cr_{0.43}V_{0.25}$ alloy was selected for heat treatment and for other related studies. The results showed that the total and the effective hydrogen storage capacity increased to 3.7 wt% and 2.3 wt%, respectively. The flatness of the plateau region was also greatly improved and heat of hydride formation was determined to be approximately -36 kJ/mol $H_2$.

  • The debonding of clad steel was often occurred at interface between stainless steel and carbon steel during the fabrication of pressure vessel. In order to clarify the causes of debonding phenomena, the fabrication sequences were fully analyzed. As a result, possible factors were noticed for causing the debonding of clad steel, that is, thermal treatment on weldment and welding. Moreover the existence of hydrogen diffused from surroundings also expedites the debonding of clad steel. In this stud, the effect of welding thermal cycle, hydrogen and mixed condition under thermal treatment on the interfacial strength of clad steel were investigated to understand the debonding mechanism of clad steel. From this study, it has been confirmed that the interfacial strength of clad steel was remarkablely deteriorated due to welding and/or existence of hydrogen under thermal treatment. In the case of welding thermal cycle effect, the higher temperature at interface experienced by welding, the more reduction in interfacial strength of clad steel resulted in. And the existence of diffusible hydrogen also reduced the interfacial strength. It is also found that the interfacial strength of clad steel became much lower value than that of the as-received plate under coexistence of above mentioned factors.

  • In HI decomposition, $Pt/Al_2O_3$ has been studied by several researchers. However, after HI decomposition, it could be seen that metal dispersion of $Pt/Al_2O_3$ was greatly decreased. This reason was expected of platinum loss and sintering, which platinum was aggregated. Also, this decrease of metal dispersion caused catalytic deactivation. This study was conducted to find the condition to minimize platinum sintering and loss. In particular, heat treatment atmosphere and temperature were examined to improve the activity of HI decomposition reaction. First of all, although $Pt/Al_2O_3$ treated in hydrogen atmosphere had low platinum dispersion between 13 and 18%, it was shown to suitable platinum form that played an important role in improving HI decomposition reaction. Oxygen in the air atmosphere made $Pt/Al_2O_3$ have high platinum dispersion even 61.52% at $500^{\circ}C$. Therefore, in order to get high platinum dispersion and suitable platinum form in HI decomposition reaction, air heat treatment at $500^{\circ}C$ was needed to add before hydrogen heat treatment. In case of 5A3H, it had 51.13% platinum dispersion and improved HI decomposition reaction activity. Also, after HI decomposition reaction it had considerable platinum dispersion of 23.89%.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate integrated anaerobic hydrogen fermentation and membrane bioreactor (MBR) for on-site domestic wastewater treatment and resource recovery. A synthetic wastewater (COD 17,000 mg/L) was used as artificial brown water which will be discharged from urine diversion toilet and fed into a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) type anaerobic reactor with inclined plate. The effluent of anaerobic reactor mixed with real household grey water (COD 700 mg/L) was further treated by MBR for reuse. An optimum condition maintained in anaerobic reactor was HRT of 8 hrs, pH 5.5, SRT of 5 days and temperature of $37^{\circ}C$. COD removal of 98% was achieved from the overall system. Total gas production rate and hydrogen content was 4.6 L/day and 52.4% respectively. COD mass balance described the COD distribution in the system via reactor byproducts and effluent COD concentration. The results of this study asserts that, anaerobic hydrogen fermentation combined with MBR is a potent system in stabilizing waste strength and clean hydrogen recovery which could be implemented for onsite domestic wastewater treatment and reuse.

  • Defects formation of Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) diamond on $^4He^{2+}$ irradiation and after remote hydrogen plasma treatment(RHPT) were investigated by cathodoluminescence(CL). As calculated in the TRIM simulation, the light elements of $^4He^{2-}$ can be penetrated into the diamond bulk structure at 3~4 $\mu\textrm{m}$ depth. The effects of the implantation region were observed when 5 keV~20 keV electron energy (insight 0.3~4.0$\mu\textrm{m}$) of CL measurement was irradiated to diamond at temperature 80 K. After the RHPT, rehybridization of irradiation damaged diamond was studied. The intensity of 5RL center(intrinsic defect of C) was diminished. The 2.16 eV center (N-V center) occurring usually by annealing could not be seen after RHPT. The diamond was rehybridized by hydrogen radicals without etching and thermal degradation by the RHPT.

  • Apoptotic cell death, characterized by DNA fragmentation and morphological changes, has previously been shown to occur in vascular endothelial cells cultured with hydrogen peroxide. The present study examined the induction of apoptosis by hydrogen peroxide and whether pyruvate, a key glycolytic intermediate and $\alpha$-keto-monocarboxylate, can inhibit the apoptotic effects in bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cells(BPAECs). Culture with 500uM hydrogen peroxide resulted in 30% cell death and induced morphological changes and DNA fragmentation. Cell injury was inhibited by the treatment with pyruvate. Pyruvate(0.1-5.0mM), and cell viability increased in a dose-dependent manner. In the presence of pyruvate(10~20mM), the viability was improved to over 95%. In contrast, treatment with lactate, a reduced form of phyuvate, did not protect against cell death oxidative stress-induced loss of viability and apoptosis was examined with $\alpha$-cyano-3-hydroxycinnarmate(COHC) as a selective mitochondrial monocarboxylate transport blocker. Incubation with COHC(500uM) did not significantly affect cell viability in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The cytoprotection by pyruvate(3mM)against hydrogen peroxide stress was abolished by COHC. This indicates that the cytoprotection by pyruvate against oxidative stress in endothelial cells is mediated, at least in part, by mitochondrial pyruvate uptake and hence endothelial enerygetics. However, cytosolic mechanisms related, at least in part, by mitochondrial pyruvate uptake and hence endothelial energetics. However, cytosolic mechanisms related to the glutathione system may also contribute. The results suggest that pyruvate has therapeutic potential in the treatment of oxidative stress-induced cytotoxicity associated with increased apoptosis.

  • In this study, optimization research was conducted through statistical analysis with the aim of maximizing the efficiency of organic matter reduction and hydrogen production by applying electrolysis process at sewage treatment plant. Statistical analysis and optimal operating conditions of organic matter removal efficiency and H2 generation, which varied with various conditions in the electrolysis process, were derived using response surface methodology. As a result, 1,268 μS/cm of conductivity, 350 A current, and pH 3.2 was found to be the optimum condition to reach the desired value as 38% of organic matter reduction and 2.58 L/min of H2 production. The experiment also determined that the optimization study was reliable. Base on this study, it was confirmed that the removal of organic matter and hydrogen production could be stably by applying the electrolysis process in the sewage treatment plant.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of hydrogen water on duck production in a field study. A total of 600 one-day-old ducks (Pekin) were randomly allotted to two treatment groups with three replicates each having 100 birds per pen in a completely randomized design. The duck production parameters measured included weight gain, feed intake, and feed efficiency. For duck drinking water, general water supplied from the farm was used as the control, and hydrogen water was supplied by installing a device that generates hydrogen (T1 groups). There was no statistical significance in duck weight gain between the two treatment groups (p>0.05). In addition, no significant difference in feed intake was found in both the control and T1 groups (p>0.05), and the range of values was similar. Feed efficiency was not significant different between the treatment groups (p>0.05), and there was no remarkable difference in the range of vaules. These results indicate that hydrogen water did not influence duck production.

  • The physical and chemical changes exhibited by high density polyethylene (HDPE) after treatment with hydrogen at a pressure of 90 MPa followed by rapid release of the hydrogen were studied. X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, thermo gravimetric analysis, and attenuated total reflectance (ATR)-fourier transform infrared (FTIR) were used for this purpose. As a result, it was found that the degree of crystallinity of HDPE decreased after hydrogen pressure treatment, while the average thickness of lamellae that constitute the crystals and the melting temperature of the crystalline region actually increased. The decomposition temperature also increased by about 3℃. In addition, it was found that the hydrogen bonding network between -OH groups in the HDPE sample was strengthened and partial chain scission occurred. These cut chains were found to be terminated by oxidative degradation such as cross-linking between chains, -C=O, -C-O, and -CHO, or by the formation of -CH3 at the chain ends, as confirmed by ATR-FTIR.
