Previous investigation results revealed that after the Low Temperature Plasma (LTP) treatment, the hydrophilicity of wool fiber was improved significantly. Such improvement enhances the wool dyeing and finishing processes which might be due to the changes of the wool surface to a more reactive one. In this paper, wool fibers were treated with LTP with different gases, namely, oxygen, nitrogen and gas mixture (25 % hydrogen/75 % nitrogen). Investigations showed that chemical composition of wool fiber surface varied differently with the different plasma gas used. The surface chemical composition of the different LTP-treated wool fibers was evaluated with different characterization methods, namely FTIR-ATR, XPS and saturated adsorption value. The experimental results were thoroughly discussed.
Walnut colorants were extracted from walnut hull and their dyeing properties on cotton were investigated. Effect of dyeing conditions on dye uptake and effect of mordanting on dye uptake, color change and colorfastness were explored. Walnut colorants showed low affinity to cotton compared with wool and its isotherm adsorption curve was Freundlich type. It was considered that hydrogen bonding and van der Waal's force were involved in the adsorption of walnut colorants onto cotton. The dyed cotton showed YR color and there was no significant color change as pH changed. The dyed cotton showed generally high colorfastness except fastness to washing and light. Mordanting did not improve dye uptake and colorfastness, and not affect color of the dyed cotton significantly.
In order to characterize the catalytically active sites on carbon black, acetylene chemisorption had been examined recently at 773 and 873 K by using a pulse technique. As the inject ion was repeated at 773 K, the adsorbed amount gradually decreased and eventually the adsorption did not occur any more. At 873 K a constant amount of $C_2H_2$ was consumed repeatedly after several injections. Good linear relationships were obtained between the methane decomposition rate at 1123 or 1173 K and the cumulative acetylene adsorption at 773 K or the constant acetylene consumption at 873 K. Reasonable models for the associative acetylene chemisorption at 773 K and the constant acetylene consumption at 873 K on the armchair face at the edges of graphene layers were proposed. The constant consumpt ion may be explained by the "$C_2H_2$-addition-hydrogen- abstract ion (CAHA)" mechanism.
Gas sensing materials for detecting inflammable gas such as alcohol, propane, acetic acid, carbon monoxide, hydrogen were developed by utiliting $MgO-Cr_2O_3-TiO_2$ system. Between 30$0^{\circ}C$ and 50$0^{\circ}C$, reversible chemisorption becomes dominant and the electrical canduction of P-type semiconductive with the gas chemisorption. The ceramic sensor exhibits a high sensitivity to particular reducing gas such as alcohol, whereas propane and butane have little effect on the resistivity. The time response of adsorption is estimated to be about 20 sec. On the other hand, the desorption process, which corresponds to oxidation due to oxygen adsorption, take more than 60 sec. Thus the ceramic sensor can be used as a alcohol sensor in an ambient aunosphere. As the oxygen concentration is increased from 0.1 to 10 precent($10^3-10^6ppm$), the resistance decreases rapidly but stabilizes at higher concentration.
Dyeing properties of silk fabric with black tea colorants were investigated in terms of dye uptakes at various dyeing conditions and the effect of mordants on color change and colorfastness. Black tea colorants showed high affinity to silk and produced brown color. Two types of adsorption isotherm were obtained; Langmuir and Freundlich equilibrium at 360 nm and 460 nm, respectively. Thus, it is considered that both of ionic and hydrogen bondings are involved in silk dyeing with black tea colorants. Dye uptake increased continuously as concentration of colorants increased. Brown color was not changed with mordant type except that Fe mordant produced dark brown color. Mordanting did not influence colorfastness of dyed silk significantly. Therefore, mordanting was not necessary in dyeing silk with black tea colorants.
Adsorption of residual gas molecules damped the emission current of a W (310) field electron emission (FE) emitter. The damping speed was linearly proportional to the pressure gauge readings at pressure ranging from ${\sim}10^{-8}Pa$ to ${\sim}10^{-9}Pa$, and the proportionality constant was employed to measure pressure in the $10^{-10}Pa$ range. A time plot of FE current revealed the existence of an "initial stable region" after the flash heating of W(310) FE, during which the FE current damps very slowly. The presence of non-hydrogen gas removed this region from the plot, supplying a means of qualitatively analysing the gas species.
Dyeing properties of rosemary colorants on cotton fabrics were investigated. Effect of dyeing conditions on dye uptake and effect of mordanting and cationizing on dye uptake, color change and colorfastness were explored. Also, antimicrobial activity of rosemary colorants was ascertained and further effect of cationizing on antimicrobial activity was investigated. Affinity of rosemary colorants to cotton fiber was considerably low, and its isotherm adsorption curve was Freundlich type, indicating that hydrogen bonding was involved in the adsorption of rosemary colorants to cotton fiber. The cotton fabrics showed generally high colorfastness except fastness to washing and light. The cationized cotton with Cationon UK(quarterly ammonium salt) showed higher dye uptake and shorter dyeing time, compared with the untreated cotton. The cationized cotton showed good colorfastness to washing, perspiration and rubbing. Antimicrobial activity of rosemary colorfastness was confirmed. The cationized cotton itself showed high bacterial reduction rate. For cationized and dyed samples, as dye uptake increased, bacterial reduction rate was decreased slightly.
As S. epidermidis cell was fractionated into cell wall, cell membrane, and cytoplasm, the cell membrane proved to be the most efficient absorbent for lead ion. Utrasonication was effective, when the cells were treated during their exponential growth. The amount of the lead ion adsorbed in cell membrane decreased as hydrogen ion concentration of solution increased. Protein purified from the cell membrane showed higher adsorption capacity for the lead ion than peptidoglycan, teichoic acid from cell wall, or cell membrane lipid. Modification of carboxyl groups in the membrane protein with ethylenediamine and 1-ethyl-3-carbodiimide hydrochloride resulted in a considerable decrease of lead ion adsorption capability, suggesting that the main binding site for lead ion was the carboxyl groups of protein in cell membrane.
The volumetric curve was characterized by current functions of large amplitude and formation peak potential of adsorption oxygen (O(a)) was disappeared with sonication. The reduction peak potential of O(a) shifted about 0.05 V to noble direction in saturated $N_2$ and air systems with addition of $Cl^{-1}$ ion and sonication. The formation and ionization potentials of adsorption hydrogen (H(a)) had not been confirmed, and were not changed with sonication.
