Ship motion is a complex controlled process with several hydrodynamic parameters that vary in wide ranges with respect to ship load condition, speed and surrounding conditions (such as wind, current, tide, etc.). Therefore, to effectively control ships in a designed track is always an important task for ship masters. This paper presents an effective adaptive autopilot ships that ensure the optimal accuracy, economy and stability characteristics. The PID control methodology is modified and parameters of a PID controller is designed to satisfy conditions for an optimal objective function that comprised by heading error, resistance and drift during changing course, and loss of surge velocity or fuel consumption. Designing of the controller for course changing process is based on the Model Reference Adaptive System (MRAS) control theory, while as designing of the automatic course keeping process is based on the Self Tuning Regulator (STR) control theory. Simulation (using MATLAB software) in various disturbance conditions shows that in comparison with conventional PID autopilots, the designed autopilot has several notable advantages: higher course turning speed, lower swing of ship bow even in strong waves and winds, high accuracy of course keeping, shorter time of rudder actions smaller times of changing rudder direction.
Due to its flexibility of the composite propeller blade, it is necessary to design a shape capable of generating a desired load at a design point in consideration of the shape change of the propeller. In order to design it, we need to evaluate not only the hydrodynamic force around it, but also its structural response of flexible propeller according to its deformation. So, it is necessary to develop a design tool to predict the hydroelastic performance of a flexible propeller with deformation considering fluid-structure interaction and special operating conditions. Finally a design optimization tool for flexible propellermade of CFRP is required. In this study, a design methodology of the specific flexible composite propeller is suggested, considering fluid-structural interaction analysis of the specific flexible propeller.
The performance of a porous swash bulkhead for the reduction of the resonant liquid motion in a swaying rectangular tank was investigated based on the assumption of linear potential theory. The Galerkin method (Porter and Evans, 1995) was used to solve the potential flow model by adding a viscous frictional damping term to the free-surface condition. By comparing the experimental results and the analytical solutions, we verified that the frictional damping coefficient was 0.4. Darcy's law was used to consider the energy dissipation at a porous bulkhead. The tool that was developed with a built-in frictional damping coefficient of 0.4 was confirmed by small-scale experiments. Using this tool, the free-surface elevation, hydrodynamic force (added mass, damping coefficient) on a wall, and the horizontal load on a bulkhead were assessed for various combinations of porosity and submergence depth. It was found that the vertical porous bulkhead can suppress sloshing motions significantly when properly designed and by selecting the appropriate porosity(${\approx}0.1$) and submergence depth.
This paper investigates a power supply of medium voltage with enhanced ignition characteristics for plasma torches. A series resonant half-bridge topology is presented as a suitable ignition circuitry. The ignition circuitry is integrated into the main power conversion system of a multi-phase staggered three-level dc-dc converter with a diode front-end rectifier. A plasma torch rated at 3MW, 2kA and having a physical size of 1m is selected to be the high enthalpy source for a waste disposal system. The steady-state and transient operations of a plasma torch are simulated. The parameters of a Cassie-Mary arc model are calculated based on 3D magneto-hydrodynamic simulations. The circuit simulation waveform shows that the ripple of the arc current can be maintained within ${\pm}10%$ of its rated value under the presence of a load disturbance. This power conversion configuration provides a high enough ignition voltage, around 5KA, during the ignition phase and high arc stability under the existence of arc disturbance noise resulting in a high-performance plasma torch system.
Recently, fluid dynamic bearings (EDBs) have important applications in miniature rotating machines such as those found in the computer information storage industry, due to their outstanding low acoustic noise and NRRO (Non-Repeatable Run Out) characteristics. This research investigates the dynamic behavior of fluid dynamic bearings composed of hydrodynamic herringbone groove journal and spiral groove thrust bearing. The five degrees of freedom of FDB are considered to describe the real motion of a general rotor bearing system. The Reynolds equation and five nonlinear equations of motion for the dynamic behavior are solved simultaneously, The incompressible Reynolds equation is solved by using the finite element method (FEM) in order to calculate the pressure distribution in a fluid film and the five equations of motion by using the Runge-Kutta method. The reaction forces and moments are obtained by integrating the pressure along the fluid film. Numerical results are validated by comparing with the previously published experimental and numerical results. As a result the dynamic behavior of FDB spindle such as orbit, floating height, and angular orbit is investigated by considering the conical motion under the static and dynamic load conditions.
Air foil bearing supports the rotating journal using hydrodynamic force generated at thin air film. The bearing performance, stiffness, damping coefficient and load capacity, depends on the rotating speed and the performance of the elastic foundation, bump foil. The main focus of this study is to decide the dynamic performance of corrugated bump foil, structural stiffness and Coulomb damping caused by friction between bump foil and top foil/bump foil and housing. Structural stiffness is determined by the bump shape (bump height, pitch and bump thickness), dry-friction, and interacting force filed up to fixed end. So, the change of the characteristics was considered as the parameters change. The air foil bearing specification for analysis follows the general size; diameter 38.1 mm and length 38.1mm (L/D=1.0). The results show that the stiffness at the fixed end is more than the stiffness at the free end, Coulomb damping is more at the fixed end due to the small displacement, and two dynamic characteristics are dependent on each other.
A new concept sea-floating port called mobile harbor has been introduced, in order to resolve the limitation of current above-ground port facilities against the continuous growth of worldwide marine transportation. One of important subjects in the design of a mobile harbor is to secure the dynamic stability against wave-induced excitation, because a relatively large-scale heavy crane system installed at the top of mobile harbor should load/unload containers at sea under the sea state up to level 3. In this context, this paper addresses a two-step sequential analytical-numerical method for analyzing the structural dynamic response of the mobile harbor crane system to the wave-induced rolling excitation. The rigid ship motion of mobile harbor by wave is analytically solved, and the flexible dynamic response of the crane system by the rigid ship motion is analyzed by the finite element method. The hydrodynamic effect between sea water and mobile harbor is reflected by means of the added moment of inertia.
This paper presents effect of aerodynamic loads on mooring line responses of a floating offshore wind turbine. A Matlab code based on blade element momentum (BEM) theory is developed to consider aerodynamic loads acting on NREL 5MW wind turbine. The aerodynamic loads are coupled with time-domain hydrodynamic analyses using one-way interaction scheme of the wave and wind loads. A semi-submersible floating platform which is from Offshore Code Comparison Collaborative Continuation(OC4) DeepCWind platform is used with catenary mooring lines simply composed of studless chain links. Average values of mooring peak tensions obtained from aerodynamic load consideration are significantly increased compared to those from simple wind drag force consideration. Consideration of aerodynamic loads also yield larger tension ranges which can be important factor to reduce fatigue life of the mooring lines.
In this study, hydrodynamic and mooring analysis for LNG FSRU moored by an internal turret with 9 mooring lines are numerically performed using commercial softwares, Hydrostar and Ariane. Met-ocean combinations for screening method are taken from wave governed condition(BV Rule Note NR 493) with relative heading between wave and wind between −45° and +45° and relative heading between wind and current between −30° and +30°. Extreme mooring analysis and sensitivity analysis are performed for intact and damaged (=one line missing) conditions and the parameters for sensitivity analysis are wave peak period, peak enhancement factor and line pretension. In the viewpoint of the design tension in mooring line, chain diameter is designed to satisfy safety factor for each conditions. As the chain diameter is increased from 152mm to 171mm, the designtension is reduced while the minimum breaking load is increased.
Low-frequency damping characteristics of side-by-side moored LNG-FPSO and LNGC arc investigated through a series of free decay model tests in calm water and under wind load condition. It is shown that low frequency damping of LNGC changes dramatically, sway damping increases more than six times for 4m distance condition while it decreases by $30\%$ for 20m distance compared with a single LNGC case. Simulation using the experimental data enhances the results, which demonstrates the necessity of experimental low-frequency damping coefficients for simulation of side-by-side vessels motion behavior.
