Specific hydrodynamic characteristic of pump-turbine during the start and load rejection process of generating mode causes anomalous increase of water pressure, along with large machine vibration, called "S" characteristic. The aim of this study is to understand and explain the hydrodynamic performance of pump-turbine at "S" characteristic region by using a model of pump-turbine system. The operation in the condition of runway and low discharge in a typical "S" characteristic curve may become unstable and complex flow appears at the passage of guide vane and impeller. Therefore, velocity and pressure distribution are investigated to give an all-sided explanation of the formation and phenomenon of this characteristic, with the assistance of velocity triangle analysis at the impeller inlet. From this study, the internal flow and pressure fluctuation at the normal, runway and low discharge points are explored, giving a deep description of hydrodynamic characteristic when the pump-turbine system operates with "S" characteristic.
Hydrodynamic characteristic of surfactant drag-reducing flows is still not fully understood. This work investigated the temperature and diameter effect on hydrodynamic characteristic of cationic surfactant drag reducing flows in pipes. Solution of oleyl bishydroxyethyl methyl ammonium chloride (Ethoquad O/12), 900 ppm, as a cationic surfactant and sodium salicylate (NaSal), 540 ppm, as a counter-ion was tested at 12, 25, 40, and $50^{\circ}C$ in pipes with diameter of 13, 25, and 40 mm. Drag reduction effectiveness of this surfactant solution was evaluated in 25 mm pipe from 6 to $75^{\circ}C$. Rheological characteristic of this solution was measured by stress control type rheometer with cone-and-plate geometry. Scale-up laws proposed by previous investigators were used to evaluate the flow characteristic of the solution. It was found that this surfactant solution has clear DR capability until $70^{\circ}C$. Result of this work suggested that temperature has a significant influence in changing the hydrodynamic entrance length of surfactant drag reducing flows. From rheological measurement, it was found that the solution exhibits Shear Induced Structure at all temperatures with different degree of peak viscosity and critical shear rate.

The hydrodynamic interaction between ship and bank can't be neglected when a vessel is app- roached toward the tip of a wedge-shaped bank in restricted waterways, such as in a harbor, near some fixed obstacles, or in a narrow channel. In this paper, the characteristic features of the hydrodynamic interaction acting on a slowly moving vessel in the proximity of a wedge-shaped bank are described and illustrated, and the effects of water depth and the spacing between ship and wedge-shaped bank are summarized and discussed based on the slender body theory. From the theoretical results, it indicated that the hydrodynamic interactions decrease as wedge-shaped bank of angle ${\beta}$ in-creases. For water depth to draft ratio less than about 2.0, the hydrodynamic interactions between ship and bank in-crease sharply as h/d decreases, regardless of the wedge-shaped bank of angle ${\beta}$. Also, for lateral separation more than about 0.2L between ship and wedge-shaped bank, it can be concluded that the bank effects decrease largely as the separation increases.
For the characteristic assessment of biomimetic shark skin structure pattern for engineering applications, we conducted the elastic hydrodynamic lubrication analysis for the shark skin surface pattern. The shark skin surfaces with roughness are generated numerically in the similar size with real shark skin scales. For the spherical contact on the generated shark skin surface with two different flow directions which are transversal and longitudinal, 3-dimensional elasto-hydrodynamic lubraction analysis are carried out. The result of the longitudinal flow which are similar with the flow of shark skin shows more beneficial effects with lower pressure and less sensitive effect with surface roughness.

In SMART, the flow mixing header assembly (FMHA) is used to mix the coolant flowing into the reactor core to maintain a uniform temperature. The FMHA is designed to have enough stiffness so the resonance with reactor internal structures does not occurs during the pipe break and the seismic accidents. Since the gap between the FMHA and the core support barrel assembly is very narrow compared with the diameter of FMHA, the hydrodynamic mass effect acting on the FMHA is not negligible. Therefore the hydrodynamic mass characteristics on the FMHA are investigated to consider the fluid and structure interaction effects. The result of modal analysis for the dry and underwater conditions, the natural frequency of primary vibration mode for the horizontal direction is reduced from 136.67 Hz to 43.76 Hz. Also the result of frequency response spectrum seismic analysis for the dry and underwater conditions, the maximum equivalent stress are increased from 13.89 MPa to 40.23 MPa. Therefore, reactor internal structures located in underwater condition shall consider carefully the hydrodynamic mass effects even though they have sufficient stiffness required for performing its functions under the dry condition.
In this study, we investigate surge force, heave force, and pitch moment, which are vertical plane hydrodynamics acting on Manta-type unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), using a model test and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Assessing the maneuvering hydrodynamic characteristic of an underwater glider in the initial design stage is crucial. Although a model test is the best approach for obtaining the maneuvering hydrodynamic derivatives for underwater vehicles, numerical methods, such as Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations, have been used owing to their efficiency in terms of time and cost. Therefore, we conducted an RANS-based CFD calculation and a model test for Manta-type UUVs. In addition, we conducted a validation study through a comparison with a model test conducted at a circular water channel (CWC) in Korea Maritime & Ocean University Furthermore, two RANS solvers (Star-CCM+ and OpenFOAM) were used and compared. Finally, the maneuvering hydrodynamic forces obtained from the static drift and resistance tests for a Manta-type UUV were presented.
It is well known that the hydrodynamic forces and moments induced by the proximity of bank in confined waters, such as in a harbour or narrow channel affect ship's maneuvering motion. In this paper, the calculation method based on the slender body theory for estimation of the hydrodynamic force between ship and breakwater is applied, and also, the characteristic features of hydrodynamic force acting on a large vessel in the proximity of a breakwater are described and illustrated. Furthermore, the effects of water depth and the lateral spacing between ship and breakwater are summarized and discussed.
The motion of birds and insects have been studied and applied to MAV(Micro Air Vehicle) and AUV(Autonomous Underwater Vehicle). Most of AUV research is focused on shape and motion of single hydrofoil. However, double hydrofoil system is mostly used in real physics. This system shows completely different hydrodynamic characteristic to single hydrofoil because of wake interaction. The goal of this study is define the trajectory of wake interaction in double hydrofoil system. Moreover, trust and efficiency of various combined motion will be demonstrated. Symmetry airfoil is used for analysis an hydrodynamic characteristic. Forward wing's plunging and pitching motion is fixed, hide wing's Heaving ratio, Pitch phase shift from forward plunging and Heaving shift is changed. This study provide necessary basic data of motion optimization for double hydrofoil system.

Disk type underwater gliders are a new type of underwater gliders and they could glide in various directions by adjusting the internal structures, making a turnaround like conventional gliders unnecessary. This characteristic of disk type underwater gliders makes them have great potential application in virtual mooring. Considering dynamic models of conventional underwater gliders could not adequately satisfy the motion characteristic of disk type underwater gliders, a nonlinear dynamic model for the motion simulation of disk type underwater glider is developed in this paper. In the model, the effect of internal masses movement is taken into consideration and a viscous hydrodynamic calculation method satisfying the motion characteristic of disk type underwater gliders is proposed. Through simulating typical motions of a disk type underwater glider, the feasibility of the dynamic model is validated and the disk type underwater glider shows good maneuverability.
The reliability of the spent fuel pool instrument is very important for the security of nuclear power plant, especially during the earthquake. The effect of the fluid force on the vibration characteristics of the flexible tube of the spent fuel pool instrument needs comprehensive analysis. In this paper, based on the potential flow theory, the hydrodynamic pressures acting on the flexible tube were obtained. A mathematical model of a flexible tube was constructed to obtain the dynamic response considering the effects of seismic load and fluid force, and a computer code was written. Based on the mathematical model and computer code, the maximum stresses of the flexible tube in both safe shutdown earthquake and operating basis earthquake events on the spent fuel pool with three typical water levels were calculated, respectively. The results show that the fluid force has an obvious effect on the stress and strain of the flexible tube in both safe shutdown earthquake and operating basis earthquake events.
