  • When we want to reproduce transport of sediment in the fields in a laboratory, we have to establish a similitude law. A similitude law is necessary when sediment transport of field is reproduced in a laboratory. When we apply our knowledge about sediment transport obtained in the laboratory to predict sediment transport in the field, we can apply Froudian law to a fluid motion that becomes agitation agency and transporting flow of sediment movement. • To investigate the moderator coolability for CANDU-6 reactors, a test facility (HU-KINS) has been manufactured as a 1/8 scaled-down of a calandria tank. In the design of the test facility, a scaling law was developed in such a way to consider the thermal-hydraulic characteristics of a CANDU-6 moderator. The proposed scaling law takes into consideration of the energy conservation, the dynamic similitude such as dimensionless numbers, Archimedes number (Ar) and Reynolds number (Re), and thermal-hydraulic properties similitude. Using this proposed scaling law, the thermal-hydraulic scaling analyses of similar test facilities such as the SPEL (1/10 scale) and the STERN (1/4 scale), have been identified. As a result, in the case of the SPEL, while the energy conservation is well defined, the similarities of Ar and the heat density are not well considered. As for the similarity of the STERN, while both the energy conservation and the characteristics of Ar are well defined, the heat density is not. In the meanwhile, the HU-KINS test facility with 1/8 length scaled-down is well similitude in compliance with all similarities of the energy conservation, the fluid dynamics and thermal-hydraulic properties. To verify the adequacy of the similarities in terms of thermal-hydraulics, a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis has been conducted using the CFX-5 code. As the results of the CFD analyses, the predicted flow patterns and variation of axial properties inside the calandria tank are well consistant with those of previous studies performed with FLUENT and this implies that the present scaling method is acceptable.

  • In this study, the Dilution Method is used to measure river discharge through the hydraulic model test. the dilution method is divided into Constant-Rate-Infection Method and Slug-Injection Method in the river discharge measurement techniques. When the dilution method is applied in the hydraulic model flume, it is analyzed that the estimated error of constant-rate-injection method is less than that of the slug-in-jection method, and the result shows that floodflow analysis is more efficient than lowflow analysis as compared observed discharge with calculated discharge. The result of statistical error analysis shows that the constant-rate-injection method is appropriate technique for the measurement of the river discharge. Therefore, the dilution method among the river discharge measurement techniques can be applied for the river basin which can't be measured with current meter or unsteady-flow regime in the urban-small drainage or hydraulic structure equipment area and can be obtained more exact results than any other discharge measurement techniques.

  • In this study attempted to evaluate the stability of the protection methods by examining hydraulic characteristics of the area around the point in which marine cable protector is installed such as surf zone occurrence point of shore-end submarine cables suitable for coastal marine environmental conditions, flow rate t the tope of the protector and maximum wave height, and to provide basic data for the selection of the optimal protection method. In performing hydraulic model experiments, the topography of submarine cable installation location was reproduced in 2-D sectional channel, and models appropriate for experimental scale and similitude law were produced and installed for each condition of submarine cables and protectors. Since the topography and submarine cable protectors were reproduced and installed in 2-D sectional channel, the exact reproduction of surf and transformation in shallow water zone was possible, and thus the physical properties could be clearly analyzed. For stability review, an experiment to examine the stability was conducted using a wave maker with 50-year frequency design waves as target, and wave height and cycles were applied based on the approximate lowest low water level(Approx. L.L.W), which is the most dangerous in submarine cable protection methods. As for experimental time, typhoon passing time in summer (about 3 hours) was applied, and wave patterns and deviation ratio of the submarine cable protector were investigated after making irregular waves corresponding to design waves. In addition, current meter and wave height meter were installed at the installation location of the submarine cable protector, and the flow rates and wave height at the top of the protector were measured and analyzed to review hydraulic properties.
