Hydraulic jump is typically designed to occur over low-haed dam spillways and weirs in the river. An important engineering application of the hydraulic jump is to dissipate the intense kinetic energy of the flows over such hydraulic structures. Turbulent flow and roller-like vortex riding up the free sureface of the jump cause most of the energy dissipation. We carry out a high resolution three-dimensional numerical simulations of a submerged hydraulic jump in a spillway and compare numerical results with a laboratory measurement obtained by the PIV. The numerical results further show the dynamic behavoirs of the inner and outer layers of the submerged wall-jet and the recirculating roller of the hydraulic jump.

This study conducted an experimental investigation on oscillatory behavior of the hydraulic jump roller. Based on the similarity of the hydraulic jump and tidal bore, the behavior of the front face of hydraulic jump with increasing downstream water depth was studied focusing on profile and fluctuation. In this study, for statistical approach, the ensemble averaging was applied to obtain relevant front profile and compared with the time averaging. The front profile gets mildly sloped and the fluctuation of the starting point of hydraulic jump decreases as the downstream water depth increases.

A depth-integrated model with an approximate Riemann solver for flux computation of the shallow water equations was applied to hydraulic jump experiments. Due to the hydraulic jump, different flow regimes occur simultaneously in a single channel. Therefore, the Weisbach resistance coefficient, which reflects flow conditions rather than the Manning roughness coefficient that is independent of depth or flow, has been employed for flow resistance. Simulation results were in good agreement with experimental results, and it was confirmed that Manning coefficients converted from Weisbach coefficients were appropriately set in the supercritical and subcritical flow reaches, respectively. Limitations of the shallow water equations that rely on hydrostatic assumptions have been revealed in comparison with hydraulic jump experiments, highlighting the need for the introduction of a non-hydrostatic shallow-water flow model.

A numerical simulation of the incompressible multiphase hydraulic jump flow was performed to compare the interface prediction through the use of the three RANS turbulence models: $k-{\varepsilon}$, $RNGk-{\varepsilon}$ and SST $k-{\omega}$. A three dimensional no submerged hydraulic jump and a two dimensional submerged hydraulic jump were modeled. Both the geometry and the mesh were created using the open source Gmsh code. The project's geometry consists of a rectangular channel with length and height differences between the two dimensional and three dimensional simulations. Uniform hexahedral cells were used for the mesh. Three refining meshes were constructed to allow to verify simulation convergence. The Volume of Fluid (abbr. VOF) method was used for treatment of the air-water surface. The turbulence models were evaluated in three distinct set up configurations to provide a greater accuracy in the flow representation. In the two-dimensional analysis of a submerged hydraulic jump simulation, the turbulence model RNG RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ provided a better interface adjust with the experimental results than the model $k-{\varepsilon}$ and SST $k-{\omega}$. In the three-dimensional simulation of a no-submerged hydraulic jump the k-# showed better results than the SST $k-{\omega}$ and RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ capturing the height and length of the ledge with a better fit with the experimental results.

In the case of multi-function weirs installed in Korea, the free hydraulic jump or the submerged hydraulic jump is occurred depending on the height of the gate opening and the tailwater level when the sluice gate of the movable weir is partially opened. In this study, the submerged hydraulic jump for the flows under the sluice gate were simulated and the mean flow, turbulence statistics, and relative water depth are investigated using numerical simulation. For numerical simulation, the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation, volume of fluid method, and k-ωSST turbulence model were used. The numerical model was validated using the results of other researchers' previously performed experiments, and it was investigated that the numerical model appropriately simulates the two-phase flow in the hydraulic jump. In addition, the distribution of mean flow, turbulence statistics, and the length of recirculation region was investigated.
In order to analyze hydraulic characteristics of discharge coefficient, hydraulic jump height, and hydraulic jump length, accompanied sediment transport, in the under-flow type vertical lift gate, the hydraulic model experiment and dimensional analysis were performed. The correlations between Froude number and hydraulic characteristics were schematized according to the presence and absence of sediment transport; the correlation of hydraulic characteristics and non-dimensional parameters was analyzed and multiple regression formulae were developed. In the hydraulic characteristics accompanied the sediment transport, by identifying the aspect different from the case that the sediment transport is absent, we verified that it is necessary to introduce variables that can express the characteristics of sediment transport. The multiple regression equations were suggested and each determination coefficient appeared high as 0.749 for discharge coefficient, 0.896 for hydraulic jump height, and 0.955 for hydraulic jump length. In order to evaluate the applicability of the developed hydraulic characteristic equations, 95% prediction interval analysis was conducted on the measured and the calculated by regression equations, and it was determined that NSE (Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency), RMSE (root mean square), and MAPE (mean absolute percentage error) are appropriate, for the accuracy analysis related to the prediction on hydraulic characteristics of discharge coefficient, hydraulic jump height and length.
The flow passing through river-crossing structures such as weirs and low-fall dams is dominated by rapidly varied flow including hydraulic jump. The intense unsteadiness of flow velocity and free surface profile affects the stability of such hydraulic structures. In particular, the steady hydraulic jump generated at high Froude number conditions includes remarkably air entrainment, making the flow characteristics more complicated. In this study, a large-eddy simulation was performed for turbulence effect and the hybrid VoF technique to simulate the steady hydraulic jump at the Froude number of 7.3 and the Reynolds number of 15,700. The results of the numerical simulation showed that the instantaneous maximum pressure and time-average pressure distribution calculated on the bottom surface downstream of the structure could be reasonably well reproduced being in good agreement with the experimental values. However, the instantaneous minimum pressure distribution in the direct downstream of the structure shows the opposite pattern to the target experimental measurement value. However, the numerical simulation performed in this study is considered to reasonably predict the minimum pressure distributions observed in various experiments conducted at similar conditions. The vertical distributions of flow velocity and air concentration computed in the center of the hydraulic jump were found to be in good agreement with the experimental results measured under similar conditions, showing self-similarity. These results show that the large eddy simulation and hybrid VoF techniques applied in this study can reproduce the hydraulic jump with strong air entrainment and the resulting intense free surface and pressure fluctuations at high Froude number conditions.

In this study, Galerkin scheme and SU/PG scheme of Petrov-Galerkin family were applied to the shallow water equations and a finite element model for shallow water flow was developed. Numerical simulations were conducted in several flumes with convection-dominated flow condition. Flow simulation of channel with slender structure in the water course revealed that Galerkin and SU/PG schemes showed similar results under very low Fr number and Re number condition. However, when the Fr number increased up to 1.58, Galerkin scheme did not converge while SU/PG scheme produced stable solutions after 5 iterations by Newton-Raphson method. For the transcritical flow simulation in diverging channel, the present model predicted the hydraulic jump accurately in terms of the jump location, the depth slope, and the flow depth after jump, and the numerical results showed good agreements with the hydraulic experiments carried out by Khalifa(1980). In the oblique hydraulic jump simulation, in which convection-dominated supercritical flow (Fr=2.74) evolves, Galerkin scheme blew up just after the first iteration of the initial time step. However, SU/PG scheme captured the boundary of oblique hydraulic jump accurately without numerical oscillation. The maximum errors quantified with exact solutions were less than 0.2% in water depth and velocity calculations, and thereby SU/PG scheme predicted the oblique hydraulic jump phenomena more accurately compared with the previous studies (Levin et al., 2006; Ricchiuto et al., 2007).

This paper deals with flow characteristics on the air entrainment and the energy dissipation in nappe flow over the stepped drop structure. Nappe flow occurred at low flow rates and for relatively large step height Dominant flow features include an air pocket, a free-falling nappe impact and a subsequent hydraulic jump on the downstream step. Air entrainment occurred from the step edge, through a free-falling nappe impact and a hydraulic jump. Most energy was dissipated by nappe impact and in the downstream hydraulic jump. It was related with the step height and the overflow depth, but not related with step slope. The stepped drop structure was found to be effcient for water treatment and energy dissipation associated with substantial air entrainment.
