  • Riverbank filtration is a kind of artificial aquifer recharge for the fresh water supply. By construction of several production wells penetrating the riverbank, surface water withdrawn from the river would pass riverbed. This extracted water is well known to be cooler than surface water in summer and warmer than surface water in winter, showing more constant water temperature. This characteristic of extracted water is applied to geothermal energy utilization. Prediction of the annual temperature variation of filtrated water is the major concern in this study. In Daesan-myeon, Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea, riverbank filtration facility has been on its operation for municipal water supply and thermal energy utilization since 2006. Appropriate hydraulic and thermal properties were estimated for flow and heat transfer modeling with given pumping rate and location. With the calibrated material properties and boundary conditions, we numerically reproduced measured head and temperature variation with acceptable error range. In the numerical simulation, the change of saturation ratio and river stage caused by rainfall was calculated and the resulting variation of thermal capacity and thermal conductivity was considered. Simulated temperature profiles can be used to assess the possible efficiency of geothermal energy utilization using riverbank filtration facility. Influence of pumping rate, pumping location on the extracted water temperature will be studied.

  • In order to recycle the waste material and to develop the thickening unit of waste activated sludge from wastewater treatment facilities, the filtration bio-reactor equipped with a shadow mask filter module was employed for this work from which the operating properties and parameters were drawn. The sludge thickening and filtration unit is made of cylindrical acryl tank(12cm i.d. ${\times}$ 58cm height: working volume of 6L), where the flat-sheet type of shadow mask filter module(pore size: 220~250um, opening area: 34.8~39.6%) was installed and the effluent was withdrawn from the effluent port at the lowest point of the reactor, and the filtration was performed only by the hydraulic pressure. For evaluating the operating performance of this reactor, some parameters such as the solid-liquid separation of different biomass concentrations, the water quality of filtrate, the aeration cleaning time and the cleaning effect were investigated. Depending on the MLSS concentrations, the different time to withdraw 3L of filtrate was required in which the longer filtration time was necessary for the higher MLSS concentrations caused by the thicker formation of cake layer: 40 minutes for 5,000 mg/L, 70 minutes for 10,000 mg/L and 100 minutes for 15,000 mg/L, where the concentrations of SS were 8.9, 6.7 and 6.5 mg/L, respectively. Under the same operating conditions (the intensity of aeration cleaning: 80 L/min, MLSS: 10,000 mg/L), the proper aeration cleaning time was revealed 30 seconds, and the stable formation of cake layer was in the range of 10 to 15 minutes. Therefore, the shadow mask considered as a waste material can be of use as a filter material for the sludge thickening system.

  • This study was carried out to examine substrate removal characteristics with the variation of the hydraulic retention time in an anaerobic filter. The feed concentration of synthetic wastewater used in the experiment was $10,000mg/l$ glucose. As media, the porosity of volcanic stones in Jeju island were 76%. The conditions of the experiment were as follows; HRT ranging from 1 day to 3 day, loading rates ranging from 3.33kg $COD_{er}/void\;m^3.day$ to 10kg $COD_{er}/void\;m^3.day$ and a temperature $35^{\circ}C$. Based on the results of the experiments, the COD removal efficiency was 98~99% in $COD_{er}$ method with loading rates ranging from 3.33kgCOD/void $m^3.day$ to 10kg COD/void $m^3.day$ and HRT ranging from 1day to 3 day. The produced quantity of gas equivalant to a porosity volume was $1.332~3.756Nm^3/void\;m^3.day$. The relationship between $COD_{er}$ loading rates and gas produced quantity equivalant to a porosity volume was well fitted with the equation of $Nm^3/void\;m^3.day{\cdot}=0.359L_0+0.179$($L_0=COD$ loading rate). Judging from the removal efficiency in this experiment, We concluded that anaerobic filter using Volcanic stones is one of improved and effective. As media, practical value of volcanic stones is sufficient.

  • Purpose: The selective laser melting (SLM) process for dentistry, which is one of the additive manufacturing technologies (AM) allows for rapid production of a three-dimensional model with complex shape by directly melting metal powder. This process generates detailed items of a three-dimensional model shape through consolidation of a thin powder layer by utilizing both selective melting and laser beam simultaneously. In regard to SLM process, Fe-base powder, Ti-6AI-4V powder, AI-base powder, etc. have been researched. It is believed that the aforementioned technologies will be widely utilized in manufacturing metal parts using metal powder of raw material. This study chose Ni-Cr-Mo metal powder in order to manufacture metal powder materials that would be used in the selective laser melting for dentistry. Methods: This study manufactured metal powder using mechanical alloying technique (MA) among those metal powder manufacturing techniques. Moreover, this study aimed to utilize the metal powder manufactured after observing the characteristics of powder as preliminary data of Ni-Cr-Mo metal powder. This study could obtain the following conclusions within the experimental limitations. Results: As a result of mechanically alloying Ni-Cr-Mo powder over time, its mean particle size was $66.93{\mu}m$ $54.4{\mu}m$ and $45.39{\mu}m$ at 10h, 20h and 30h, respectively. The gtain form of metal powder by mechanical alloying technique was a sponge-like shape of irregular plate; however, the gtain form manufactured by high-pressure water aromization process had the following three types: globular type, chain type and oval type. Conclusion: This study found $37.65{\mu}m$ as the mean particle size of Ni-Cr-Mo metal powder, which was manufactured using water atomization technique under the following conditions: water atomization flux of 300 liter/min, hydraulic pressure of $400kgf/cm^2$ and injection angle of $45^{\circ}$. This study confirmed that the grain form of powder (solid particle form) would vary depending on the manufacturing process.

  • Since slope sliding and loss of railway triggered by a rainfall produce instability in the operation of trains, a proper method to estimate the slope stability considering rainfall Is required. from the field study, sliding induced by rainfall depends on the engineering properties of soils, three dimensional aspect of the slope, rainfall intensity and geological conditions of the soil layers. In this study, among various types of sliding, slope Instability caused by the surface runoff water at the concave zones in a slope is investigated. The depth of runoff water is calculated by using the Rational method and Manning equation. The occurrence of runoff water is evaluated by a comparison between the calculated infiltration rate and rainfall intensity. Pressure heads which can be calculated from the modified Iverson model are used to calculate the factor of safety along the vertical depth of the slope. The modified Iverson model considers the depth of runoff water, thus the maximum hydraulic gradient along the depth of slope is greater than one.

  • The feasibility of fly ash was evaluated as an alternative liner material to the conventional clay liner of landfills through modeling and laboratory experiments. In order to consider the effect of unsaturation on water flow through the liner, analyses were made to compare flow characteristics in saturated liner with that of unsaturated one. Contaminant migration characteristics in liners were investigated by batch experiment and modeling, in which phenol was employed as a model was solved by numerical techniques of finite difference method and predictor-corrector method to deal with high non-linearity. Sequential method was used to handle the system of differential equations. Results show that the alternative liner material is more capable of cutting off water flow in unsaturated condition and in preventing phenol from passing through it. It can be seen that, under the flow conditions considered in this study, the conventional saturation approach underestimates the amount of water passing through the liner and doers the cut-off capability against phenol significantly.

  • When a tunnel is excavated below groundwater table, the groundwater flows into the excavated wall of tunnel and seepage forces are acting on the tunnel wall. Such seepage forces significantly affect the ground reaction curve which is defined as the relationship between internal pressure and radial displacement of tunnel wall. In this paper, seepage forces arising from the ground water flow into a tunnel were estimated quantitatively. Magnitude of seepage forces was decided based on hydraulic gradient distribution around tunnel. Using these results, the theoretical solutions of ground reaction curve with consideration of seepage forces under steady-state flow were derived. A no-support condition and a supported condition with grouted bolts and shotcrete lining were considered, respectively. The theoretical solution derived in this study was validated by numerical analysis. The changes in the ground reaction curve according to various cover depths and groundwater table conditions were investigated. Based on the results, the application limit of theoretical solutions was suggested.

  • In this study, a flexible multi-body dynamic simulation model of a knuckle boom crane is developed to evaluate the stress of spindle and rack gears under dynamic working conditions. It is difficult to predict potential critical damage to a knuckle boom crane if only the static condition is considered during the development process. To solve this issue, a severe working scenario (high speed with heavy load) was simulated as a boundary condition for testing the integrity of the dynamic simulation model. The crane gear model is defined as a flexible body so contact analysis was performed. The functional motion of a knuckle boom crane is generated by applying forces at each end of the rack gear, which was converted from hydraulic pressure measured for the experiment. The bending and contact stress of gears are theoretically calculated to validate the simulation model. In the simulation, the maximum stress of spindle and rack gears are observed when the crane abruptly stops. Peak impact force is produced at the contact interface between pinion and rack gears due to the inertia force of the boom. However, the maximum stress (bending/contact) of spindle and rack are under the yield stress, which is safe from damage. By using the developed simulation model, the experiment process is expected to be minimized.

  • The purpose of this paper is to estimate the instream flow of the South Han River Basin to ensure an adequate supply of suitable quality of water for preservation and enhancement of aquatic ecosystems. Proposed methods is Physical Habitant Simulation System of Instream Flow Incremental Methodology. Accurate estimation on a water depth and a velocity distribution was acquired by applying a two dimensional hydrodynamic model for a simulation of a hydraulic parameter necessary for the habitat evaluation to be used in a physical habitat simulation system. The Habitat Suitability Criteria with the application of univariate curve on zacco platypus as a representative fish was able to be established by conducting a field investigation. The establishment of a hydrological materialistic balance between upper and lower streams was confirmed by conducting a simulation simultaneously together with a mainstream section, which was excluded from the considered sections for the inhabitation evaluation of fish.

  • The 2-D hydraulic experimental results for the submerged rubble-mound structure, we have been concerned with the slability/function characteristics of the structures by the effects of wave force, scour/deposition at the toe and the wave transmission ratio at the lee-side sea. So, to investigate the variation characteristics of the wave transmission ratio which depended on a geometrical structure of the submerged breakwater profiles, the critical conditions for the depth of submergence and crest width were obviously presented. In summary, the results lead us to the conclusion that the wave control capabilities of submerged breakwaters by the variation of the submergence depth is higher than about 4 times the degree at the efficiency than the that of crest width. The destruction of the covering block at the crest generated at the region which was located between the maximum and minimum damage curve, and it's maximum damage/failure station from the toe of the structure was $0.2\;L_s.$ As the wave transmission coefficient and the slope of the structure increase, the damage/failure ratio and the maximum scour depth at the toe was extended, respectively. When the maximum scour depth happened, the destruction of the covering block which was located at the toe generated at the front of the submerged rubble-mound breakwater. Finally, it was found from the results that the optimization of the structure may be obtained by the efficient decision of the submergence depth and crest width in the permissible range of the wave transmission ratio.
