In recent hydraulic actuation systems, conventional hydraulic spool valves with pressure compensators are becoming less popular, after the introduction of the independent metering concept for valves. Within this concept, four valves are needed for actuating a single cylinder. Subsequently, this increases the freedom of controlling both chamber pressures of the cylinder, and it then provides for electronically-controlled pressure compensation facilities. Additionally, this has the potential to save valuable energy. The primary focus of this paper is to develop a new generation of hydraulic circuits using the independent metering valve (IMV). This configuration can function well as a conventional IMV circuit while providing better pressure control. We first describe the working principles of five distinct modes of the proposed IMV system. Then, mathematical models for each working mode are presented. Finally, we present numerical simulations that have been carried out to evaluate the system performance, in comparison with that of the conventional IMV configuration. The simulation results demonstrate that the performance of the new IMV configuration is superior to the conventional IMV system in terms of energy savings.
Past research has repeatedly demonstrated the fact that hydraulic semiactive systems, if operated Properly, can provide levels of control authority in structural vibration control systems that are comparable to a fully active hydraulic damper. The performance of the semiactive system when used to provide vibration mitigation for a laboratory test structure is described in this paper Numerical and experimental verification of the effectiveness of the proposed bistate controller which relies on a Lyapunov approach that seeks to dissipate the energy of the system is also presented. The results based on the bistate control are compared with those of two different control strategies. The work indicates that hydraulic semiactive actuator provides a reliable, and inexpensive means of achieving structural control.

An electro-hydraulic copying system is developed and its performance is experimentally investigated. As compared with a mechanical hydraulic coping system, this system has a basic difference in that; (1) the stylus movement is converted into an electrical signal via a position transducer. (2)the actuator displacement is also measured by a position sensing element, which serves as a feedback signal. Since the system parameters affect the control performance, the response characteristics such as percentage overshoot, rise time, settling time and steady state error are experimentally obtained under variation of these variables. The system parameter include supply pressure, servo amplifier gain and feedback gain. The experimental result shows that the cutting tool follows a stylus input motion to a desirable accuracy. The implication of this result indicates that the developed system can enhance the copying accuracy of the conventionally used mechanical type of hydraulic copying system.
Performance of DI diesel engine with high-pressure fuel injection equipment is directly related to its emission characteristics and fuel consumption. So, the electro-hydraulic injector for the common-rail injection system should be designed to meet the precise high fuel delivery control capability. Currently, most high pressure injector in use has a needle driven by the solenoid coil energy or the piezo actuator controlled by charge-discharge of output pulse current. In this study, macroscopic spray approaching method was applied under constant volume chamber to research the performance of three different injectors : solenoid, indirect-acting piezo and direct-acting piezo type for CR direct-injection. LED back illumination for Mie scattering was applied on the liquid spray visible of direct-acting piezo injector, including hydraulic-servo type solenoid and piezo-driven injectors. As main results, we found that a direct-acting piezo injector had better a spray tip penetration than hydraulic-servo injectors in spray visualization.

The hydraulic pump for a Electro-hydrostatic Actuator for aircrafts should be able to quickly feed large volume of oil into hydraulic cylinder in order to reduce the response time. On the other hand, it should be also able to precisely dispense small amount of oil by low-speed operation so that the steady state position control error of the EHA can be accurately compensated. This paper is focused on the investigation how the plasma coating surface treatment of cylinder barrel with CrSiN can contribute to the reduction of low-speed friction torque of a bent-axis type piston pump. The results showed that the reduction of the friction torque was not remarkable, but that the anti-wear characteristics of the CrSiN-coated cylinder barrel were much better that those of the original one.

This paper presents a study on the DSP(Digital Signal Processor) controller for the PBW(power-by-wire) system using BLDC(Brushless Direct Current) servo motor pump. The PBW hydraulic actuator was realized with hydraulic pump driven by BLDC servo motor, hydraulic cylinder and controller. This PBW system needs speed control of servo motor for linear thrust action of hydraulic cylinder. This paper implements a servo controller with vector control algorithm and MIN-MAX PWM technique. As CPU of a controller, TMS320F2812 DSP was adopted because it has PWM waveform generator, A/D converter, SPI(Serial Peripheral Interface) port and many input/output port etc.
This study attempts to show an example of developing and applying thermal hydraulic simulation model for Aircraft-EHA. The overview of research procedure is as in the following. First, The unit hydraulic simulation model, which reflects physical quantity answering engineer's purpose is developed. Second, The unit hydraulic simulation model is combined, and then branched out to EHA hydraulic model. Third, a simulation model including flow thermal is developed, and then oil temperature rise time according to 'initial temperature and load' is examined. Finally, the master graph that can be used for designing EHA combined with thermal hydraulic analysis results in several cases is compiled, and suggested. AMESim, commercial software, is used through whole procedure.

This paper presents a robust lateral controller for autonomous guidance of a farm tractor in field operations. Although mechanical steering actuators have recently been used for passenger vehicles, the steering actuator of the farm tractor is based on a hydraulic system, resulting in limited bandwidth and a larger time delay. Based on a kinematic tractor model with steering actuator dynamics, a nonlinear control technique called dynamic surface control is applied to design a robust lateral controller that compensates for uncertainty owing to steering actuator and road geometry. Finally, tracking performance and robustness of the proposed controller are validated via commercial tractor simulations, with respect to the time delay of the steering actuator and road geometry (e.g., up and down hills), on a given field with a constant friction coefficient.

This study presents a mathematical model and a sliding mode observer of the injection system for common rail diesel engines. The injector model consists of three subsystems: the actuator subsystem, the mechanical subsystem, and the hydraulic subsystem. In the actuator subsystem, the constitutive relations of piezoelectricity are used to model the actuator made up of piezoelectric material. Based on the proposed model, the observer estimates the injection rate and injection timing, and can play a vital role of sensorless control of fuel injection in the near future. The sliding mode theory is applied to the observer design in order to overcome model uncertainties. The injector model and observer are evaluated through the injector experiments. The simulation results of the injector model are in good agreement with the experimental data. The sliding mode observer can effectively estimate the injection timing and the injection rate of the injector.

With recent development of technology of high stiffness material and the structural design, the construction of high rise structures such as tall building, tower has increased. The more flexible and slender structure is vulnerable to the internal and external dynamic loads induced by earthquake, wind and traffic load. There have been great effort and many researches to minimize the influence of dynamic loads on the structure. The traditional and stable method, the application of the passive damper, is not able to comply with various dynamic loads, while the mass damper which active control technology is integrated can effectively comply with load types. Therefore, the application of active control of huge structures with AMD(Active mass damper) or HMD(Hybrid Mass damper) is increasing. Up to now, most of actuators are servomotor and hydraulic actuator. But it is known that the electromagnetic actuator applies non contacting control force, which makes the control system easier with no characteristic change depending on time. In this paper, Hybrid mass damper with electromagnetic actuator was designed and applied to building scaled structure. The performance of designed HMD tested by shake table test is included.
