  • This paper is a numerical study on the correlation of leakage by the variation of operating temperature and orifice diameter applying to hydrostatic bearing in hydraulic actuator. Compared with Brackbill and Kandlikar experimental paper to verify the validity of the numerical analysis technique of the present study, we derive the result that the results of experiments and numerical analysis to match very well. CFD analysis program were analyzed using a commercial code FLUENT V14.5. Inlet and outlet, were applied pressure conditions, the main variables of the analysis is temperature and the orifice inner diameter. The analysis results, pressure value has decreased as the oil temperature and the orifice diameter increases.

  • A flexible pointing system mounted on top of a vehicle suffers from performance degradation due to bending vibrations as the vehicle runs on a bump course. In order to improve the pointing performance, the pointing structure's vibrations should be suppressed. In this paper, a nonlinear controller is designed to control the tip position of the pointing system while actively suppressing the vibrations. To cope with high order dynamics and nonlinearities of the plant and hydraulic actuating system, a two-stage sliding mode controller is devised. The desired actuating pressure is obtained in the first stage and then the in put current In the hydraulic servo system is computed to generate the pressure. The simulation results show the effectiveness of this scheme and improvements in pointing accuracy.

  • Energy consumption of conventional hydraulic excavators controlled by MCV is considerable when negative load is applied because the meter orifice and meter-out orifice are machined in one spool. Therefore, IMV is introduced to save energy use of hydraulic excavators, but existing hydraulic excavators have various advantages so it is difficult to make a clear comparison. In this study, we compare the use of an existing MCV excavator that has many advantages such as negative control, and IMV for boom up and down operation, and if IMV is used to save energy, we will examine the cause. If possible, for comparability under the same conditions, both systems use pressure balance valves to minimize power consumption when not using power in the actuator. The orifice area at each notch of each valve is calculated, and energy saving is verified by comparing the two systems through simulation.

  • The Grand-Touring is a game motion simulator that simulates the race-car driving motion with three hydraulic cylinders which connect the platform and base in parallel. Its motion control system consists of the PC-based main controller and micro-controller based sub-controller. The former one process the dynamic image of race-car in response to the driver's action and computes the reference command for each cylinder and the latter one is designed for the tracking control of hydraulic cylinder and interfacing the auxiliary signals between various sensors/actuator and main controller. In this research, we developed the sub-controller that implements the required functions of Grand-Touring and prove the overall performance with experiments.

  • It has recently shown that a solenoid valve can be utilized in a hydraulic position-control system by discontinuous control methods. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of solenoid valves on the response characteristics of a hydraulic position-control system by applying two kinds of discontinuous control methods i.e., Simple On-Off(SOF) and Pulsating On-Off(POF) controls. Three types of solenoid valves i.e., low-frequency, closed-center type(LF/C), low-frequency, tandem-center type(LF/T) were used in this study. Effects of loading conditions and control parameters on the response characteristics were experimentally examined and compared each other. Pressure transients within the actuator were also studied.

  • EPPR (Electro-hydraulic Proportional Pressure Reducing) valves are pressure control valves. In this study, an independent metering valve (IMV), which is a combination of a spool valve opened and closed with the help of an EPPR valve, was discussed. The overall performance of the valve (IMV) was obtained by the respective modeling and simulation of the system. The valve investigated in this study is to be used for independent metering of hydraulic excavator actuator e.g. boom, arm, bucket etc. To design the model, continuity equations and force balance equations were used. The set of differential equations were then simulated in Simulink using ODE45 option in the configuration toolbox. The valve has to be able to control the flow rate going in and out of the cylinder separately, which is why the particular configuration was needed and selected.

  • In this paper, the piezoelectric-hydraulic pump with a piezostack actuator as a driving source has been designed, fabricated, and evaluated for its application to UAV's brake system. The performance requirements of the piezoelectric-hydraulic pump were decided based on the requirements analysis of the target aircraft brake system. The geometric design of the piezoelectric-hydraulic pump to meet the performance requirements of the pump was conducted, and all components of the pump including the spring sheet type check valves were machined with close tolerance. By constructing a test apparatus for the performance check of the piezoelectric-hydraulic pump, the performance characteristics of the pump, such as the outlet flow rate for load-free condition and the outlet oil pressure for closed loop condition, have been evaluated. It has been found by the performance test result that the developed piezoelectric-hydraulic pump satisfies the design requirements effectively.

  • Because a hydraulic actuator has high power and force densities, this allows the weight of the robot's limbs to be reduced. This allows for good dynamic characteristics and high energy efficiency. Thus, hydraulic actuators are used in some exoskeleton robots and quadrupedal robots that require high torque. Force control is useful for robot compliance with a user or environment. However, force control of a hydraulic robot is difficult because a hydraulic servo system is highly nonlinear from a control perspective. In this study, a nonlinear model was used to develop a simulation program for a hydraulic servo system consisting of a servo valve, transmission lines, and a cylinder. The problems and considerations with regard to the force control performance for a hydraulic servo system were investigated. A force control method using the nonlinear model was proposed, and its effect was evaluated with the simulation program.

  • Real-Time Hybrid Simulation (RTHS) is a powerful and cost-effective dynamic experimental technique. To implement a stable and accurate RTHS, time delay present in the experiment loop needs to be compensated. This delay is mostly introduced by servo-hydraulic actuator dynamics and can be reduced by applying appropriate compensators. Existing compensators have demonstrated effective performance in achieving good tracking performance. Most of them have been focused on their application in cases where the structure under investigation is subjected to inputs with relatively low frequency bandwidth such as earthquake excitations. To advance RTHS as an attractive technique for other engineering applications with broader excitation frequency, a discrete-time feedforward compensator is developed herein via various optimization techniques to enhance the performance of RTHS. The proposed compensator is unique as a discrete-time, model-based feedforward compensator. The feedforward control is chosen because it can substantially improve the reference tracking performance and speed when the plant dynamics is well-understood and modeled. The discrete-time formulation enables the use of inherently stable digital filters for compensator development, and avoids the error induced by continuous-time to discrete-time conversion during the compensator implementation in digital computer. This paper discusses the technical challenges in designing a discrete-time compensator, and proposes several optimal solutions to resolve these challenges. The effectiveness of compensators obtained via these optimal solutions is demonstrated through both numerical and experimental studies. Then, the proposed compensators have been successfully applied to RTHS tests. By comparing these results to results obtained using several existing feedforward compensators, the proposed compensator demonstrates superior performance in both time delay and Root-Mean-Square (RMS) error.

  • During dynamic flight by propulsion of rocket engine, in the atmosphere, the attitude control of flight vehicle can be accomplished by the aerodynamic fin actuator. But, in the outer space, the method of TVC(Thrust Vector Control) is only depend on for it. There are many systems which were developed for TVC. In our research, among them we adopted gimbal engine actuation system which could control the vector of thrust by swivelling rocket engine connected by gimbal. There are electro-hydraulic, electro-mechanical and pneumatic system which can be used as gimbal engine actuation system, but the electro-hydraulic system that has high ratio of output power to mass is preferred for the high power system. In this note, we made a mathematical model of the electro-hydraulic gimbal engine actuation system for the TVC of KSR-III in detail and on the base of this model we performed a simulation study. And then, we verified the model by making a comparison between the simulation and the experiments on the real system.
