  • This paper describes the need for a ductile Fiber Reinforced Plastic(FRP) reinforcement for concrete structures. Using the material hybrid and geometric hybrid, it is demonstrated that the pseudo-ductility characteristic can be generated in FRP rebar. Ductile hybrid FRP bars were successfully fabricated at 4mm and l0mm nominal diameters using an hand lay up method. Tensile specimens from these bars were tested and compared with behavior of FRP rebar and steel bar

  • This study developed Fiber/Particle Hybrid MMCs and analyzed their mechanical properties. Using $\textrm{Al}_2\textrm{O}_3f$ and $\textrm{Al}_2\textrm{O}_3p$ with the fiber to particle ratio of 1:1, 1:3, 1:5 hybrid preform and MMCs are fabricated. For the analysis of the mechanical properties, three point bending tests were preformed for the preform and tensile test for the MMCs. The experimental results show that the hybrid MMCs can be successfully fabricated using the equipment of fiber preform fabrication system and squeeze casting method. And as the amount of particle in hybrid MMCs increases, the tensile strength, elastic modulus and the volume fraction of reinforcement increases.

  • The strength of aluminum 7075 and carbon composite hybrid joints was studied for adhesive, bolt, and the adhesive-bolt combined joints. Several hybrid joint specimens were tested to get the failure load and modes for three types of the joints. Adhesive Cytec EA9394S was used for aluminum and carbon bonding. Failure load of the adhesive-bolt combined joint was 94 % of the sum of the failure load of the separately bonded and bolted joints. Hybrid joint also showed more stable failure behavior than the simple adhesive or bolted joint.

  • The technology of rapid prototyping (RP) is used for design verification, function test and fabrication of prototype. The current issues in RP are improvement in accuracy and application of various materials. In this paper, a hybrid rapid prototyping system is introduced which can fabricate nano composites using various materials. This hybrid system adopts RP and machining process, so material deposition and removal is performed at the same time in a single station. As examples, micro gears and a composite scaffold were fabricated using photo cured polymer with nano powders such as carbon black and hydroxyapatite. From the micro gear samples the hybrid RP technology showed higher precision than those made by casting or deposition process.

  • Composite-to-aluminum joins were tested to get failure loads and modes for three types of joins; adhesive bonding, bolt fastening, and adhesive-bolt hybrid joining. Film type adhesive FM73 and paste type adhesive Cytec EA9394S were used for aluminum and composite bonding to make a double-lap joint. A digital microscope camcorder was used to monitor the failure initiation and propagation. It was found that the hybrid joining is an effective method to strengthen the joint when the mechanical fastening is stronger than the bonding as in the case of using the paste type adhesive. On the contrary, when the strength of the bolted joint is lower than the strength of the bonded joint as in the joint with the film type adhesive, the bolt joining contribute little to the hybrid joint strength.

  • Fatigue fracture behavior of a hybrid joint between side-panel and under-frame by riveting and adhesive bonding has been evaluated. Two kinds of joint specimens based on real geometry were fabricated for shearing test as well as bending test. Static and cyclic loadings were used for fatigue assessment. Fatigue fracture results obtained by such experiments were reflected in modifications of design parameters of the hybrid joint.

  • For the axial crushing tests of various shape of tubes, it was reported that composite tubes need trigger mechanism to avoid brittle failure. In this study, static axial crush tests were performed with the new aluminum/GFRP hybrid tubes. Glass/Epoxy prepregs were wrapped around aluminum tube and co-cured. The failure of hybrid tube was stable and progressive without trigger mechanism, and specific energy absorption was increased to maximum 34% in comparison with aluminum tube. Effective energy absorption is possible for inner aluminum tube because wrapped composite tube constrain the deflection of aluminum tube and reduce the folding length. The failure of hybrid composite tube was stable without trigger mechanism because inner aluminum tube could play the role of crack initiator and controller. Aluminum/Glass-Epoxy hybrid tube is suitable for the vehicle front structure due to effective energy absorption capability, easy production, and simple application for RTM process.

  • The Interlaminar fracture behavior of hybrid composite with non-woven carbon tissue was investigated under Mode I (DCB) and Mode II (ENF) loading condition. Hybrid composites were manufactured by means of inserting a non-woven tissue between prepreg layers. Two kinds of specimens were prepared from [0]$_{24}$ and [$0_{12}/0_{12}$]. Where, the symbol "/" means that a non-woven carbon tissue was located at 0/0 mid-plane of the specimen. The interlaminar fracture toughness of hybrid composites was compared with that of CFRP. The fracture surfaces of the specimens were observed using optical microscope and SEM, and the failure mechanism was discussed. The hybrid laminates, which are made by inserting non-woven carbon tissue between layers, were shown to be effective to remarkably improve Mode II fracture toughness.toughness.

  • Lately, high production rate welding processes for Al alloys, which are used as LNG FPSO cargo containment system material, have been developed to overcome the limit of installation and high rework rates. In particular, plasma-metal inert gas (MIG) hybrid (PMH) welding can be used to obtain a higher deposition rate and lower porosity, while facilitating a cleaning effect by preheating and post heating the wire and the base metal. However, an asymmetric undercut and a black-colored deposit are created on the surface of PMH weld in Al alloys. For controlling the surface defect formation, the wire feeding speed and nozzle diameter in the PMH weld was investigated through arc phenomena with high-speed imaging and metallurgical analysis.
