Hybrid mass dampers consist of passive tuned mass dampers and active mass dampers. They have the advantage that passive tuned mass dampers are still operated even when active mass dampers are stopped by excessive disturbances or power failure. This paper begins first with the comparative analysis of tuned mass dampers, hybrid mass dampers, and active mass dampers. Next more detailed study is carried out on the hybrid mass dampers: cascade hybrid mass dampers (CHMD) and active tuned mass dampers (ATMD). CHMD is regarded as more reasonable device because of its lighter active mass than ATMD's. However CHMD can not neglect stroke saturation problem caused by the length limitation of active damper mass. We compensate the saturation problem with nonlinear restoring force. The restoring force is calculated based on the states and phases of active mass dampers and added to the control force. It is shown that the presented compensation method prevents CHMD from saturation behavior without apparent changes of control force and responses compared to those in case of not considering the saturation problem.

In this paper, a hybrid mass damper using AC-servomotor was designed and developed in order to reduce vibration levels of a 5-story test structure under base excitation. Control performances of the HMD under random and earthquakes excitations are compared with those of TMD through experimental test. It is confirmed that the HMD is more effective to reduce the vibration levels of the test structure especially for the earthquake excitation which excites more than 2 vibration modes of the structure simultaneously.

Hybrid mass damper systems have recently been introduced as a dynamic vibration absorber to exploit the benefits of both the conventional tuned mass damper system and the active control system. A hybrid system is programmed to function as either a conventional TMD or as an active system according to the wind conditions and the resultant building and damper mass vibration characteristics. This paper deals with the design of the robust controller for the control of the flexible box structure. The control algorithm was devised based on $H_2$(LQG) robust control logic with acceleration feedback and to improve the capability of the controller Kalman Filter was accepted for the system. To test the ability of the robust controller using the linear motor damper system, performance tests and simulations were carried out on the full-scale steel frame structure. Through the performance tests, it was confirmed that acceleration levels are reduced down.

As resent trends in structural construction have been to build taller and larger structures than any time in the past, they have had high flexibility and low damping that can cause large vibration response under severe environmental loading such as earthquakes, winds, and mechanical excitations. The damper with mass and spring is one approach to safeguarding the structure against excessive vibrations. In this paper, the lumped electrical circuit approach of mass/spring system is used to model the mechanical aspects according to the frequency. Therefore, the mass/spring system can be dealt with here and linked with the equivalent circuit of electric linear oscillatory actuator(LOA). Analysis models are two types of vibration control system, active mass damper(AMD) and hybrid mass damper(HMD). AMD consists of the moving coil LOA with mass only The LOA of HMD with mass and spring is composed of the fixed coil and the movable permanent magnet(PM) field part. The PM field part composed magnet modules and iron coke, is the damper marts itself. We Present the motional resistance and reactance of mass/spring system and the system impedance of AMD and HMD according to the frequency.

Fuzzy hybrid control technique with a smart tuned mass damper(STMD) was proposed in this study for the suppression of wind-induced motion of a tall building. To develop the effective control algorithm for a STMD, skyhook and groundhook control algorithms were employed. Usually, skyhook controller can effectively reduce STMD motion and groundhook controller shows good control performance for the reduction of building responses. In this study, fuzzy hybrid controller, which can determine an optimal weighting factor for combining two controllers in real time, was developed to improve the control performance of conventional hybrid controller using weighted sum approach. A 76-story office building was used as an example structure to investigate the performance of the proposed controller. A magnetorheological(MR) damper was used to develop a STMD and the control performance of STMD was evaluated comparing with the passive and active TMD. The numerical studies show that the control effectiveness of a STMD is significantly superior to that of the conventional TMD. It is also shown that fuzzy hybrid controller can effectively adjust skyhook and groundhook control algorithms and reduce both responses of STMD and building.

A linear motor damper based on the linear motor principle is developed to suppress structural vibration. This paper deals with the design, analysis, and manufacture of the linear motor damper. It is designed to be able to move the auxiliary mass of 1500kg, up to $\pm250mm$ stroke. The control algorithm was designed based on LQG control logic with acceleration feedback. Through performance tests, it was confirmed that the developed hybrid mass damper has reliable feasibility as a control device for structural control. In addition, the linear motor damper is more economical than both hydraulic and electric motor driving mass damper with respect to simple structure and low maintenance cost. A series of performance tests of the linear motor damper system were carried out on the full-scale steel frame structure in UNISON Corporation. Through the performance tests, it was confirmed that acceleration levels are reduced down 10dB for first mode of structure
Flexible structures may experience excessive levels of vibration under the action of wind, adversely affecting serviceability and occupant comfort. To ensure the functional performance of a structure, various design modifications are possible, ranging from alternative structural systems to the utilization of passive and active control devices. This paper presents an overview of state-of-the-art measures that reduce the structural response of buildings, including a summary of recent work in aerodynamic tailoring and a discussion of auxiliary damping devices for mitigating the wind-induced motion of structures. In addition, some discussion of the application of such devices to improve structural resistance to seismic events is also presented, concluding with detailed examples of the application of auxiliary damping devices in Australia, Canada, China, Japan, and the United States.

Engine is the main source of vibration that generates unwanted noise and vibration of vehicle chassis. Especially, in submarine applications, radiation of noise signatures can be detected at some distance away from the submarine using a sonar array. Thus quiet operation is crucial for submarine's survivability. This study addresses reduction of the force transmissibility originating from engines and transmitted to hull through engine mounts. An inertial damper, as an actuator of hybrid mount system, is addressed to reduce even further the level of vibration. Narrow band FxLMS algorithms are broadly used to cancel the vibration of engine mount because of its excellent performance of canceling narrow band noise. However, in real active dampers, the maximum displacement of damper mass is kinematically restricted. When the control input signal from the FxLMS algorithm exceeds this limitation, the damper mass will collide with the mechanical stops and results in many problems. Originated from these, a modified narrow band FxLMS algorithm based on the equalizer technique with the maximum allowable displacement of active damper mass is proposed in this study. Some simulation results showed that the propose algorithm is effective to suppress vibration of engine mount while ensuring given displacement constraint.

A large capacity hybrid-type linear motor damper was designed and fabricated for the application to the vibration control of a large building structure model. It has been designed to be able to move the damper mass, 1,500kg up to $\pm$ 250mm strokes at the first mode natural frequency of the building structure model, 0.51Hz. Dynamic response characteristics of the fabricated damper were investigated by experimentally and analytically.

In this study, the control performance of a Tuned Liquid Mass Damper(TLMD) manufactured to reduce the orthogonal bi-directional responses of building structures was experimentally evaluated. the TLMD using only one control device reduce bi-directional responses of building structures by making the TLMD behave as TMD and TLCD to the strong and weak axial direction of building structures. first, the control performance was evaluated by forcing sinusoidal waves to a test model that the TLMD is installed on the scale-downed building structure. Second, the real-time hybrid shaking table test was performed to evaluate the performance of the vibration control system made up of numerical part as a scale-downed building structural model and a physical experimental part as a TLMD. the superiority of bi-directional vibration control performance of the manufactured TLMD was verified by comparing the uncontrolled and controlled results of these tests.
