In order to find the effect of humic substances affecting to the behavior of diazinon in submerged soil, the adsorption rate of diazinon was investigated with different soil humic substances like as humin, humic acid and fulvic acid. The adsorption rate of diazinon(1.8 ppm) was 12.4% in humin, 11.9% in fulvic acid and 10.4% in humic acid at 1% concentration of humic substances, also were not much differences at 0.1 and 0.5%. But it showed much similar level ($10.2{\sim}10.6%$) at 1.0% concentration in 5ppm diazinon treatment. As a result, because adsorption rate of diazinon on humic substances were about $10{\sim}12%$, disappearance of diazinon in submerged soil may be affected by the other factors such as soil microorganism.
Peat humin(p-Humin), humic acid(p-HA) and fulvic acid(p-FA) were isolated from Canadian Sphagnum peat moss by dissolution in 0.1M NaOH followed by acid precipitation. After purification cycles, they are characterized for their elemental compositions and, acid/base properties. Functionalities and carbon structures of the humic fractions were also characterized using FT-IR and solid state $^{13}C$-NMR spectroscopy. Those results are compared with one another and with soil humic substances from literatures. Main purpose of this study was to present a chemical and spectroscopic characterization data of humic substance from peat moss needed to evaluate its environmental applicability. The relative proportions of the p-Humin, p-HA and p-FA in the peat moss was $76\%,\;18\%,\;and\;3\%$, respectively, based on the total organic matter content ($957{\pm}32\;g/kg$). Elemental composition of p-Humin were found to be $C_{1.00}H_{1.52}O_{0.79}N_{0.01}$ and had higher H/C and (N+O)/C ratio compared to those of p-HA($C_{1.00}H_{1.09}O_{0.51}N_{0.02}$) and p-FA($C_{1.00}H_{1.08}O_{0.65}N_{0.01}$). Based on the analysis of pH titration data, there are two different types of acidic functional groups in the peat moss and its humic fractions and their proton exchange capacities(PEC, meq/g) were in the order p-FA(4.91) >p-HA(4.09) >p-Humin(2.38). IR spectroscopic results showed that the functionalities of the peat moss humic molecules are similar to those of soil humic substances, and carboxylic acid(-COOH) is main function group providing metal binding sites for Cd(II) sorption. Spectral features obtained from $^{13}C$-NMR indicated that peat moss humic molecules have rather lower degree of humification, and that important structural differences exist between p-Humin and soluble humic fractions(p-HA and p-FA).

Humic acid, fulvic acid and humin present in volcanic ash soil were isolated by IHSS standard procedure and their characteristics were analyzed as a basic study to evaluate the effect of humic substances on the behaviour of pollutants in contaminated surface soil. The volcanic ash soil contained 42.1 % of total organic matter based on the oven-dried soil, and humin, humic and fulvic acids corresponded to 67.5 %, 15.2 %, 7.6 % of TOM respectively. Structural informations of the humic fractions were obtained from their elemental analysis and IR, CPMAS C-13 NMR spectral analysis and the differences among them are discussed with their C/H, O/C ratios and distributions of carbon types in the molecules.
In a series of studies on the formation processes and chemical properties of humic substances from paddy soils the photoabsorption spectra of hymatomelanic and humic acids were recorded in the visible, ultraviolet and infrared regions. The spectra patterns of both fractions in the visible range were indicative of the decrease in optical density with the rise of wavelength and the UV-spectra showed the maximum peak at $235\;m{\mu}$, the minimum at $395\;m{\mu}$. The IR-spectra indicate a typical pattern showing a few sharp peaks in both fractions. The spectra of both fractions were compared and discussed.
Humic substances of 17 organic fertilizers available on the market were the objects of study. The list of ingredients for formulation of them comprised fish meal. bone meal, oil-cakes, brewer's grains, peat, sawdust, wood bark, zeolite, soil conditioner, live-stock droppings, amino acid fermentation byproduct, chaff, limestone and others. Humic and fulvic acids were isolated from those substances and given chemical and spectroscopic analyses. Nutritional values of the organic fertilizers showed big diversity. Humification of organic matter was incomplete for some of the fertilizers as indicated by a high C/N ratio. Extractable humic acid percentage was higher, in general, than that of fulvic acid. Also the relative content of humin increased with advanced humification. Total acidity was closely related to phenolic hydroxyl groups. Relationships between carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. and carboxyl and alcoholic hydroxyl groups were very significant. Ultraviolet and visible light absorption spectra of humic and fulvic acids were substantially similar. The types of humic acids were B. P, and Rp. Two humic acids of the 17 samples belonged to B type. 3 to P type and all the rest to Rp type.

Dissolved air flotation (DAF) is an effective solid/liquid separation process for low density particles, such as algal flocs, humus materials and clay particles produced from low turbidity water. The fraction of humic substances for natural organic matters (NOMs) are considered problematic in water because it can readily react with chlorine to form harmful by-products (trihalomethanes) and can be exposed to undesirable color, tastes and odors in drinking water. A broad class of NOMs includes fulvic acid, humic acid and humin. This paper will discuss the results from a study that performed with a DAF pump process using synthetic wastewater contained humic substance. Batch jar tests were performed to evaluate coagulant dose and recycle ratio on flotation efficiency.

In this study, humic and fulvic acids in soils at the vicinity of domestic atomic power plants(NPPs), located in Yungkwang(YK), Uljin(UJ), Kori(KR), Koseong(KS), Wolseong(WS) area, and in volcanic ash soils of the Cheju island(Mt. Hanla(HL), Manjanggul(MJ)) were isolated, and characterized using chemical(elemental analysis, proton exchange capacity, molecular size distribution) and spectroscopic(UV/Vis., IR, FL, $^{13}$ C NMR spectra) methods. The results were compared with one another and compiled for their DB establishments. The humic substances distribution (humic acid, fulvic acid, Humin) in the soils were also determined by IHSS standard method. Main purpose of this study was to provide a basic data needed to evaluate the effect of humic substances on the migrational behaviour of radioactive elements in contaminated surface soil.
The leaching behaviour of $^{14}C$-paraquat in soil was investigated using soil columns (5 cm I.D. ${\times}$ 30 cm H.) parked with two soils of different physicochemical properties. $^{14}C$-Activities leached from the soil A (loam) columns with and without rice plants for 117 days were 0.42 and 0.54% of the originally applied, whereas those from the soil B (sandy loam) were 0.21 and 0.31%, respectively. $^{14}C$-Activities absorbed by rice plants from soil A and B were 3.87 and 2.79%, respectively, most of which remained in the root. Irrespective of soil types, more than 96% of the total $^{14}C$ resided in soil, mostly in the depth of $0{\sim}5$ cm. The water-extractable $^{14}C$ in soil was in the range of $6.10{\sim}9.01%$ of the total $^{14}C$ applied. The rest of $^{14}C$, which corresponds to non-extractable soil residues of [$^{14}C$]paraquat, was distributed in humic substances in the decreasing order of humin>humic acid>fulvic acid. The soil pH of the columns without rice plants increased after the leaching experiment due to the flooded anaerobic condition resulting in the reduction of the $H^{+}$ concentration, whereas that of the columns with rice plants did not increase by the offsetting effect of the acidic exudates from the roots. Low mobility of paraquat in soil strongly indicates that no contamination of ground water would be caused by paraquat residues in paddy soils under normal precipitation.
A study was undertaken to investigate the absorption, translocation and metabolism of carbofuran in rice paddies. Ring-3-$^{14}C-carbofuran$ applied onto the paddy soil surface was rapidly absorbed and translocated into rice plants. Within 2 days after treatment, it was observed that carbofuran reached shoot tips and accumulated. More than 15% of total radioactivity was recovered in rice plant from 3 to 20 days after treatment. In organic soluble fraction of rice plant extract, 3-hydroxycarbofuran was the major metabolite recording 43% and 4% of total organic soluble radioactivity in shoot and root at 20 days respectively. 3-Ketocarbofuran and phenolic metabolites including carbofuran phenol, 3-hydroxycarbofuran phenol and 3-ketocarbofuran phenol were also detected in the organic soluble fractions. Some glycosidic conjugates of carbofuran metabolites were found in water soluble fraction of rice plant extract and 3-hydroxycarbofuran was the most abundant aglycone. Radioactivity in paddy soil was rapidly decreased until 3 days after treatment and then maintained almost constant level. A significant portion (42∼56 %) of the total radioactivity remained in soil as nonextractable residue from 5 to 20 days after treatment. The nonextractable radioactivity was mainly located in soil organic matter distributing in humin, fulvic acid and humic acid fractions with the decreasing order. Evolution of $^{14}CO_2$ from ring cleavage of $3-^{14}C-carbofuran$ was negligible recording only 1.8% of total radioactivity during 20 days after treatment.
A series of laboratory experiment was conducted to find out the chemical composition, characterization of humic substances by physical and chemical methods and reaction of Na-pyrophosphate, $Ca(OH)_2$ and rice straw with albumin on the degradation of soil organic matter in the volcanic ask soils of the Jeju Island. Results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. The contents of organic matter, available silicon, active iron and aluminum concentration in volcanic ash the soils were remarkably higher but available phosphorous was comparatively lower than the mineral soils. In volcanic ash soil, the contents of potassium, calcium and magnessium were higher in upland soil than that of forest soil. The ratios of active $Al^{{+}{+}{+}}/Fe^{{+}{+}}$, C/P and $K/Ca^+$ Mg were apparently high in volcanic ash soils while that of $SiO_2$/O.M. was high in mineral soil. 2. The carbon/nitrogen ratio in humin, humic acid content in organic matter, and carbon contents of humin in total carbon of soil organic matter were apparently higher in the volcanic ash soils than in the mineral soils, The total nitrogen and fractions of acid or alkali soluble nitrogen were remarkably high in volcanic ash soils while mineralizable nitrogen ($NH_4$-N and $NO_3$) contents were high in mineral soils. 3. The values of K600, RF and log K were also higher in volcanic ash soils than those in mineral soils, and the absorbance in the visible range were high and color was dark in the soil of which humification was progressed Extracted humic acid from volcanic ash soil was less reactive to the oxidizing chemical reagent and was persistance to the acid or alkali hydrolysises. 4. The major oxygen-containing functional groups in humic substances of volcanic ash soils were phenolic-OH alcoholic-OH and carboxyl groups while those in mineral soil were methoxyl and carbonyl groups. 5. Absorption spectra of alkaline solution of humic acid ranged from 200 nm to maxima 500 nm. Visible spectra peaks of from humic substances in the visible region were recognized at 350, 420, 450 and 480 nm. Only one single absorbance peak was observed in the visible region at 362 nm for Heugag series and two absorbance Peak were also at 360 nm and 390 nm for Yeungrag series. 6. Evolution of carbon as $Co_2$ was increased with addition of Na-pyrophosphate in Namweon and Heugag series, and "priming effects" took place on the soil organic matter decomposition by addition of rice straw with albumin in Ido series.
