  • The photodegradation of TCBs in humic acid solutions at pH 7 was evaluated under laboratory sunlight simulated irradiation for 8 and 42 days. The irradiation to TCBs in solution in the presence of humic acid produced trichlorophenols, dichlorophenols in addition to the minor photodegraded products such as dichlorobutadiene, dichlorobenzaldehyde and pentachlorobiphenyls. The formation of photodegradation products indicate that the excited singlet oxygen and solvated electrons play a major contributors to the photodegradation process.

  • Bromadiolone (BRD), a second generation anticoagulant often applied to the living environment to control rodents, is usually considered to have low environmental toxicity due to its poor solubility in water. In this study of the effect of humic acid (HA) on BRD using electronic absorption spectroscopy, it has been observed that BRD is appreciably solubilized even in low concentrations of aqueous HA solutions. The BRD solubilization efficiency of aqueous HA was found to be $2.39{\pm}0.14$ ($4.53{\pm}0.26{\mu}M\;ppm^{-1}$). It was also seen that BRD is reasonably solubilized in aqueous extract of farm soil.

  • Many organochlorine pesticides are persistent in the environment and have a tendency to bioaccumulate significantly through food chains. Aquatic environments are particularly more affected because the pesticides applied to agriculture systems are eventually carried into water bodies, through surface runoff, rivers, and groundwater flow. The objective of this paper is to study the effect of the coexistence of a heavy metal on the solubility enhancement of the two representative organochlorine pesticides, lindane and dieldrin, by humic acids. The solubility enhancement of pesticides by humic acid in a single system was compared with that in a binary system. The extent of solubility enhancement of lindane by humic acids was constant. while that of dieldrin by humic acids increased. Also, the solubility enhancement of dieldrin by humic acid with Pb decreased than that by humic acid without Pb.

  • In this paper, ozonation of humic acid in water was characterized using $UV_{254}$ absorbance, TOC, Ultra Filtration and $^{13}C-NMR$. Also, carbonyl compounds in ozonated water were analyzed by GC/MS using PFBOA method. Ozonation by-products of water containing humic acid were determined as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, glyoxal and methylglyoxal. Results of $UV_{254}$ absorbance and TOC with ozonation time at humic acid 20, 100ppm represent that decrease rate of 80% within ozonation time is 20 min and TOC removal rate of 40-50% within ozonation time is 30 min. Results for $^{13}C-NMR$ and Ultra Filtration, humic acid of high molecular weight by ozonation are oxidated and decomposed so that it was conversed low molecular weight such as aldehydes, carboxylic acid.

  • Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCLs) have been used for the applications of the hydraulic containment system in landfill due to inexpensive costs, simple workability and distinguished ability as a barrier material. However, bentonite of GCLs is easy to be damaged by the chemical solutions. Thus, there is a need to evaluate the potential susceptibility of GCLs causing Increase the hydraulic conductivity when GCLs are exposed to raw leachate and dissolved humic substances from landfill leachate. The hydraulic conductivity tests were performed with flexible-wall permeameter (the falling -headwater/rising -tailwater procedure) in order to verify the potential susceptibility of GCLs. The values of the hydraulic conductivity conducted with raw leachate as a permeant liquid increased considerably; however, The change of the hydraulic conductivity in the case of humic and fulvic acid were not worthy of notice. As the results of swelling tests of bentonite, however, humic substances can affect badly on the dispersion behavior of bentonite. These results indicate that humic substances dissolved in leachate could reduce the hydraulic conductivity of GCLs in landfill.

  • Humic acid, fulvic acid and humin present in volcanic ash soil were isolated by IHSS standard procedure and their characteristics were analyzed as a basic study to evaluate the effect of humic substances on the behaviour of pollutants in contaminated surface soil. The volcanic ash soil contained 42.1 % of total organic matter based on the oven-dried soil, and humin, humic and fulvic acids corresponded to 67.5 %, 15.2 %, 7.6 % of TOM respectively. Structural informations of the humic fractions were obtained from their elemental analysis and IR, CPMAS C-13 NMR spectral analysis and the differences among them are discussed with their C/H, O/C ratios and distributions of carbon types in the molecules.

  • In this study, humic and fulvic acids in soils at the vicinity of domestic atomic power plants(NPPs), located in Yungkwang(YK), Uljin(UJ), Kori(KR), Koseong(KS), Wolseong(WS) area, and in volcanic ash soils of the Cheju island(Mt. Hanla(HL), Manjanggul(MJ)) were isolated, and characterized using chemical(elemental analysis, proton exchange capacity, molecular size distribution) and spectroscopic(UV/Vis., IR, FL, $^{13}$ C NMR spectra) methods. The results were compared with one another and compiled for their DB establishments. The humic substances distribution (humic acid, fulvic acid, Humin) in the soils were also determined by IHSS standard method. Main purpose of this study was to provide a basic data needed to evaluate the effect of humic substances on the migrational behaviour of radioactive elements in contaminated surface soil.

  • This study investigates the characteristics of humic acid before and after ozonation. The results were comapred in such terms as CODCr, CODMn, TOC(total organic carbon) and molecular size distribution. As a result of ozonation (with the dose of 3mgO3/mgHumic Acid), UV NIS absorbance, CODCr, CODMn and TOC were decreased with similar tendency. The mole fraction of high molecular size was rapidly decreased and the fraction ratio of low molecular size was increased through ozone treatment. This fact can be correlated with the change in the difference and the ratio of CODCr and CODMn (the value of CODCr-CODMn and CODMn/CODCr). From this result, it can be inferred that the molecular size and the degree of chemical oxidative degradation of humic acid after ozonation were changed.

  • Ozone alone, Ozone/GAC, Ozone/$H_2O_2$ and Ozone/GAC/$H_2O_2$ processes were introduced for treatment of humic acid, which is a representative refractory organic compound. $H_2O_2$ and GAC used as catalysts for experiment. The treatment efficiencies of humic acid in each process were analyzed for pH variation, DOC removal, and $UV_{254}$ decrease. $UV_{254}$ decrease in Ozone/GAC and Ozone/GAC/$H_2O_2$ processes were the highest with about 93%, and Ozone alone and Ozone/$H_2O_2$ processes were 88%. DOC removal in Ozone/GAC/$H_2O_2$ process was the highest with 71%. Removal by Ozone/GAC, Ozone alone, and Ozone/$H_2O_2$ processes were 66%, 39%, and 47%, respectively.

  • By the chemical procedure and infra-red spectroscopy, the characteristics of humic acid were studied. The results were as follows: 1. Molecular weight. 5,200. 2. Molecular formula. $C_{240}H_{250}O_{120}N_{1O}$. 3. Rational formula. 4. Confirmation of the accurate structure of humic acid is beyond us nowadays. The structure is speculated that it may be a kind of condensed polymer of many benzene kerns in which above mentioned various functional groups are attached. Also some part of the large quantities of oxygen would be furan type carbonyl and aliphatic ethereal forms.
