This paper gives an overview of HIGIPS design concepts and prototype HIGIPS configuration, and discusses its application to recognition of the 3-D motion of a human arm. HIGIPS which employs the combination of pipeline architecture and multiprocessor architecture, is a high-speed, high-performance and low cost N * M multimicroprocessor parallel machine, where N is the number of pipeline stages and M is the number of processors in each stage. The algorithm to recognize the motion of a human arm with a single TV camera was developed on personal computer (NEC PC9801 series). As a constraint condition, some simple ring marks are used. Each joint of the arm is attached with a ring mark to obtain its centroid position when the arm moves. These centroid positions in the three-dimensional space are linked at each of the successive pictures of the moving arm to recover its overall motion. This algorithm takes about 2 seconds to process one image frame on the general-purpose personal computer. This paper mainly discuses how to partition this algorithm and execute on HIGIPS, and shows the speed up. From this application, it is clear that HIGIPS is an efficient machine for image processing and recognizing.

Gigong exercise is simple form's game for health care. Gigong exercise is the training method in mind and body, and it prevent or cure the disease by becoming larger the human's nature-healing power This syudy intends to identify the effective processing channel of the Doin Gigong Exercise for the reduction of shoulder-arm pain. The processing channel of the Doin Gigong Exercise for the reduction of shoulder-arm pain cinsist of warming, main, finishing exercise. The warming exercise start breathing and concentrate upon shoulder-arm exercise. The upper and lower sides join-hands exercise give help smoothly the Gi-circulation of human body in every direction. The finishing exercise consist of experience to Gi with the object of maintaining human comfortable condition. As mentioned above, the Doin Gigong exercise is effective intervention for the reduction of shoulder-arm pain.

This work presents a design and control method for a flexible robot arm operated by a wire drive that follows human gestures. When moving the robot arm to a desired position, the necessary wire moving length is calculated and the motors are rotated accordingly to the length. A robotic arm is composed of a total of two module-formed mechanism similar to real human motion. Two wires are used as a closed loop in one module, and universal joints are attached to each disk to create up, down, left, and right movements. In order to control the motor, the anti-windup PID was applied to limit the sudden change usually caused by accumulated error in the integral control term. In addition, master/slave communication protocol and operation program for linking 6 motors to MYO sensor and IMU sensor output were developed at the same time. This makes it possible to receive the image information of the camera attached to the robot arm and simultaneously send the control command to the robot at high speed.
In this study, we tried to investigate the impedance characteristic of human arm in a cooperative task. Human arm was moved in a desired trajectory. The motion was actuated by a 1 degree-of-freedom robot system. As the muscle is mechanically analogous to a spring-damper system, a second-order equation was considered as the model for arm dynamics. In the model, inertia, stiffness and damping factor were considered. The impedance parameter was estimated from the position and torque data obtained from the experiment and based on the "Estimation of Parametric Model". It was found that the inertia is almost constant over the operational time. The damping factor and stiffness were high...
In this paper, characteristics of the motions of a human arm are investigated experimentally. When the conditions of the target point are restricted, human adjusts its trajectory and velocity pattern of the arm to fit the conditions skillfully. The purpose of this work is to examine the characteristics of the trajectory, velocity pattern, and the size of the duration in the following cases. First, we examine the case of point-to-point motion. The results are consistent with the minimum jerk theory. However, individual differences in the length of the duration can be observed in the experiment. Second, we examine the case which requires accuracy of positioning at the target point. It is found that the velocity pattern differs from the bell shaped pattern explained by the minimum jerk theory, and has its peak in the first half of the duration. When higher accuracy of the positioning is required, learning effects can be observed. Finally, to examine the case which requires constraint of the arm posture at the target point, we conduct experiments of a human trying to grasp a cup. It is considered that this motion consists of two steps : one is the positioning motion of the person in order to start the grasping motion, the other is the grasping motion of the human's hand approaching toward the cup and grasping it. In addition, two representative velocity patterns are observed : one is the similar velocity pattern explained in the above experiment, the other is the velocity pattern which has its relative maximum in the latter half of the duration.
In teleoperating, as seeing the monitor screen obtained from a camera instituted in the working environment, human operator generally controls the slave arm. Because we can see only 2-D image in a monitor, human operator does not know the depth information and can not work with high accuracy. In this paper, we proposed a traded control method using an visual sensor for the purpose of solving this problem. We can control a teleoperation system with precision when we use the proposed algorithm. Not only a human operator command but also an autonomous visual sensor feedback command is given to a slave arm for the purpose of coincidence current image features and target image features. When the slave arm place in a distant place from the target position, human operator can know very well the difference between the desired image features and the current image features, but calculated visual sensor command have big errors. And when the slave arm is near the target position, the state of affairs is changed conversely. With this visual sensor feedback, human does not need coincide the detail difference between the desired image features and the current image features and proposed method can work with higher accuracy than other method without, sensor feedback. The effectiveness of the proposed control method is verified through series of experiments.

This paper introduces a method to control an industrial robot arm to imitate the movement of the human arm and hand using electromyography (EMG) signals. The proposed method is implemented on the UR3 robot that is a popular industrial robot and a MYO armband that measure the EMG signals generated by human muscles. The communications for the UR3 robot and the MYO armband are integrated in the robot operating system (ROS) that is a middle-ware to develop robot systems easily. The movement of the human arm and hand is detected by the MYO armband, which is utilized to recognize and to estimate the speed of the movement of the operator's arm and the motion of the operator's hand. The proposed system can be easily used when human's detailed movement is required in the environment where human can't work. An experiments have been conducted to verify the performance of the proposed method using the teleoperation of the UR3 robot.

This paper proposes the human arm motion tracking algorithm based on the signal processing for surface EMG (electromyogram) sensors attached on both upper arm and shoulder. The signals acquired by using surface EMG sensors are processed with choosing the maximum in a short period, taking the absolute value, and filtering noises out with a low-pass filter. The processed signals are directly used for the motion generation of virtual arm in real time simulator. The virtual arm of simulator has two degrees of freedom and complies with the flexion and extension motions of elbow and shoulder. Also, we show the validity of the suggested algorithms through the experiments.
Background In prosthesis-based breast reconstruction patients, the drain tends to be kept in place longer than in patients who undergo only mastectomy. Postoperative arm exercise also increases the drainage volume. However, to preserve shoulder function, early exercise is recommended. In this study, we investigated the effect of early exercise on the total drainage volume and drain duration in these patients. Methods We designed a prospective randomized trial involving 56 patients who underwent immediate breast reconstruction following mastectomy using tissue expanders. In each group, the patients were randomized either to perform early arm exercises using specific shoulder movement guidelines 2 days after surgery or to restrict arm movement above the shoulder height until drain removal. The drain duration and the total amount of drainage were the primary endpoints. Results There were no significant differences in age, height, weight, body mass index, or mastectomy specimen weight between the two groups. The total amount of drainage was 1,497 mL in the early exercise group and 1,336 mL in the exercise restriction group. The duration until complete removal of the drains was 19.71 days in the early exercise group and 17.11 days in the exercise restriction group. Conclusions Exercise restriction after breast reconstruction did not lead to a significant difference in the drainage volume or the average time until drain removal. Thus, early exercise is recommended for improved shoulder mobility postoperatively. More long-term studies are needed to determine the effect of early exercise on shoulder mobility in prosthesis-based breast reconstruction patients.
