  • This study proposes a lower-limb exoskeleton system that is controlled by a wearer's muscle activity. This system is designed by following procedure. First, analyze the muscle activation patterns of human leg while walking. Second, select the adequate actuator to support the human walking based on calculation of required force of knee joint for step walking. Third, unit type knee and ankle orthotics are integrated with selected actuator. Finally, using this knee-assistive system (KAS) and developed muscle stiffness sensors (MSS), the muscle activity pattern of the subject is analyzed while he is walking on the stair. This study proposes an operating algorithm of KAS based on command signal of MSS which is generated by motion intent of human. A healthy and normal subject walked while wearing the developed powered-knee exoskeleton on his/her knees, and measured effectively assisted plantar flexor strength of the subject's knees and those neighboring muscles. Finally, capabilities and feasibility of the KAS are evaluated by testing the adapted motor pattern and the EMG signal variance while walking with exoskeleton. These results shows that developed exoskeleton which controlled by muscle activity could help human's walking acceptably.

  • This study was carried to identify whether acupuncture at several meridian points can affect the human anesthesia or not using the EEG mapping. We observe the change in the brain wave patterns obtained by electroencephalogram after acupuncture. 1. It is concluded that the pattern of resting computerized EEG map in intact human is normal and acupunctuation at determined meridian points induced lesser narrow field of alpha activity, more extensive field of ${\delta}$, ${\theta}$ activity, father resulted in marked shift to cerebrofrontal dominance in field of ${\delta}$, ${\theta}$ activity by t-SPM. 2. It seems likely that acupunctuation at experimental meridian points acts on slight anesthesia or hypnosis.

  • Non-human primates have been increasing in demand as important experimental animals and companion animals, domestically and internationally. The number of non-human primates for these purposes will be much enhanced in the near future. Despite this trend, basic physiological data are scarcely available in these animal species, leading to the difficulty to diagnose diseases when necessary, due to the absence of reference values. Particularly, there is not any report on the total activity of LDH of non-human primates, let alone LDH isoenzyme patterns, in Korea. LDH isoenzymes have a high level of efficaciousness as diagnostic and prognostic aids in various diseases. In this study, total activities and isoenzyme patterns of LDH were measured to obtain their reference values in domestically reared common marmosets, crab-eating macaques and Japanese macaques. There were widespread different values of serum total LDH among the non-human primate species experimented in this study. Serum LDH values of common marmosets and crab-eating macaques were 597.5$\pm$243.1 IU/l and 605.3$\pm$312.6 IU/l, respectively, whereas those of Japanese macaque showed 1,209$\pm$473.8 IU/l. Five isoenzyme fractions of LDH were observed in all experimented non-human primates but their ranks and proportions represented different patterns one another. In common marmosets, the percent of fraction for serum LDH1, LDH$_2$, LDH$_3$, LDH$_4$, and LDH$_{5}$ was 13.7$\pm$6.4%, 23.3$\pm$3.6%, 29.2$\pm$5.0%, 9.4$\pm$1.4% and 24.4$\pm$7.5%, respectively. The rank of LDH isoenzymes was LDH$_3$>LDH$_{5}$>LDH$_2$>LDH$_1$>LDH$_4$, in the descending order. For crab-eating macaques, the fraction of serum LDH$_1$, LDH$_2$, LDH$_3$, LDH$_4$, and LDH$_{5}$ occupied 19.5$\pm$12.7%, 25.3$\pm$9.3%, 23.8$\pm$8.1%, 10.2$\pm$2.8% and 21.3$\pm$14.2%, respectively. The order of LDH isoenzymes was LDH$_2$>LDH$_3$>LDH$_{5}$>LDH$_1$>LDH$_4$, from top to down. On the while, in Japanese macaques, the fraction of serum LDH$_1$ to LDH$_{5}$ showed 23.4$\pm$11.8%, 30.5$\pm$4.1%, 17.4$\pm$3.9%, 11.3$\pm$3.7% and 13.8$\pm$5.6%, respectively. The decreasing order indicated LDH$_2$>LDH$_1$>LDH$_3$>LDH$_{5}$>LDH$_4$. In conclusion, values such as LDH and LDH isoenzyme patterns of investigated for the first time from non-human primates reaared in Korea, could be reference values for the optimal diagnosis and therapy of diseases of the corresponding animal species. Other parameters of hematology and blood biochemistry are urgently needed to study for the benefit of our intimate non-human primates.an primates.

  • There are have been reports that the distribution of electromyographical(EMG) activity is determined in a predictable manner by both the location and number of occlusal contacts. However, these reports placed an emphasis on whole dentition. Inclined plane contacts in the frontal plane are classified as A-, B- or C-types. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relation between occlusal tooth contact patterns and EMG activity of masseter muscle during maximum voluntary clenching. Methods: Fifteen healthy human subjects(Mean age; 25.3 years) volunteered to participate in this study. Acrylic resin overlays were fabricated for upper 2nd premolars and 1st molars bilaterally, and offered 3 types(A-, B- and AB- type contact). EMG activity of the masseter muscles was recorded bilaterally during maximum voluntary clenching. Statistical analysis was performed using the one-way ANOVA. Results: The group with a A-type contact showed a statistically lower EMG activity of masseter muscle than that of natural group(p<0.05) and that of B- and AB- type groups(p<0.01) on both upper 2nd premolars and upper 1st molars. Conclusions: These results suggest that occlusal tooth contact patterns have an influence on EMG activity of masseter muscle during maximum voluntary clenching.

  • This study is focused on the characteristics of organization types of activity diagrams for experimental residential design. Diagrams became one of the crucial design methods to rationally generate a definite spatial form that contains indefinite human activities In contemporary architecture. Particularly in residential design, activity diagrams based on the occupants' behavioral patterns have been critically important. 'Scientific Management in the Home' by mathematical calculation and the Archigram's 'Living 1990' equipped with innovative technologies are the representative examples in modern architecture. The study is focused on the experimental residential projects since 2000 and three main types of activity organization were discovered: 'Weaving through Circulation';'Flexible Space by Equipment' and 'Activity Selection by Open-Close System'. Two projects from each type are analyzed in detail to further develop the comparison study. The study is concluded that, although the architect's preconceived . philosophical background has an important role, activity organization should smoothly derive from the unique conditions of the project such as the characteristic of the occupant itself.

  • Taxonomy of human brain activity is a complicated rather challenging procedure. Due to its multifaceted aspects, including experiment design, stimuli selection and presentation of images other than feature extraction and selection techniques, foster its challenging nature. Although, researchers have focused various methods to create taxonomy of human brain activity, however use of multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) for image recognition to catalog the human brain activities is scarce. Moreover, experiment design is a complex procedure and selection of image type, color and order is challenging too. Thus, this research bridge the gap by using MVPA to create taxonomy of human brain activity for different categories of images, both colored and gray scale. In this regard, experiment is conducted through EEG testing technique, with feature extraction, selection and classification approaches to collect data from prequalified criteria of 25 graduates of University Technology PETRONAS (UTP). These participants are shown both colored and gray scale images to record accuracy and reaction time. The results showed that colored images produces better end result in terms of accuracy and response time using wavelet transform, t-test and support vector machine. This research resulted that MVPA is a better approach for the analysis of EEG data as more useful information can be extracted from the brain using colored images. This research discusses a detail behavior of human brain based on the color and gray scale images for the specific and unique task. This research contributes to further improve the decoding of human brain with increased accuracy. Besides, such experiment settings can be implemented and contribute to other areas of medical, military, business, lie detection and many others.

  • This study focused on to design and toanalysis of a myoelectronic hand. We considered a low frequency factor in human life and to quantify low frequency which a human body responded to using a 1-axis ant a 3-axis accelerometer. The dynamic myoelectronic hand are important for tasks such a continuous prosthetic control and a EMG signal recognition, which have not been successfully mastered by the most neural approached To control myoelectronic hand, classifying myoelectronic patterns are also important. Experimental results of FEM are 110㎫ on Thumb, 200㎫ on Index finger, 220㎫ on Middle finger 260㎫ on Ring finger and 270㎫ on Little finger. Experimental results of accelerometer are 1.4-0.4(m/s2) ,(5-20(〔Hz〕) in Feeding activity and 0.4-0(m/s2) (0-10〔Hz〕) in Lifting activity. Considering these facts, we suggest a new type myoelectronic hand.

  • Stories are important instruments for configuring our cognitive and social worlds, but they do not necessarily make us more caring or less aggressive and self-involved. The ability to tell and follow a story requires cognitive capacities that are basic to the neurobiology of mental functioning, and so it would stand to reason that our experiences with stories would draw on and re-shape patterns of interaction that extend beyond the immediate experience of reading or listening to a narrative. Our intuitive, bodily-based ability to understand the actions of other people is fundamental to social relations, including the circuit between the representation of a configured action emplotted in a narrative and the reader's or listener's activity of following the story as we assimilate its patterns into the figures that shape our worlds. The activity of following a narrative can have a variety of beneficial or potentially noxious social consequences, either promoting the shared intentionality that neurobiologically oriented cultural anthropologists identify as a unique human capacity supporting culturally productive collaboration, or habitualizing and thereby naturalizing particular patterns of perception into rigid ideological constructs. The doubling of "me" and "not-me" in narrative acts of identification may promote the "we-intentionality" that makes socially beneficial cooperation possible, or it can set off mimetic conflict and various contagion effects. Neuroscience cannot predict what the social consequences of narrative will be, but it can identify the brain- and body-based processes through which (for better or worse) stories exercise social power.
