This study analyzed household expenditure patterns using the 1990 Korean Consumer Expenditure Survey and identified the factors determining a household's probability to be in an expenditure pattern. The results of cluster analysis revealed five expenditure patterns: Education and Recreation-dominated; Necessities-dominated; Miscellaneous expenditure-dominated Housing dominated; and Transportation and Communication-dominated patterns. Based on the results of descriptive and Logit analyses household income household size age of household head and housing status were major factors to determine the type of househld expenditure pattern.
This study examines household expenditure patterns for single-parent families to better understand the decision-making process and to consider the appropriateness of the decisions on monetary allocation. This study investigates the household expenditure patterns and the determinants of expenditure patterns for single-father families as compared to those for single-mother families. A series of analyses of the data, which was gathered from the 2015 Single-parent Family Survey on household expenditures, were conducted. The results show that there are differences in the household expenditure volumes and patterns between single-father families and single-mother families. Differences in the categories of expenditure and variations in the share that was allocated for each expenditure category in single-father families as compared to in single-mother families were both statistically significant. Disparities were found in seven categories of household expenditure between single-father families and single-mother families. The amount allocated from total expenditures for each expenditure category was also significantly different between single-father families and single-mother families in regards to clothing, home equipment, housing, water/light/heat costs, transportation, and telecommunication. The determinants of the total household expenditure for single-parent families were age, level of education, number of family members, public transfer, household income, assets, and debt.
The purpose of this study was to find the characteristics of university education expenditure and how university education expenditure affected household finance such as total household expenditure after excluding education expenditure, savings, and debts respectively. The data were drawn from the 8th Korean Labor & Income Panel Study conducted by the Korean Labor Institute, and 563 households with children attending university were selected. The t-test, F-test (Duncan's multiple range test as post hoc test), OLS, and Heckman's two-step estimation were utilized by SAS 9.1 and SPSS 12.0 for Windows. The results were as follows: First, average annual tuition was found to be 6,170,000won(21.5% of total annual household expenditures) and average annual private education expenses were 4,920,000won(15.9% of total annual household expenditures). Second, the higher the household income levels, the more spent on university education, whereas the higher the household income level, the lower the household expenditure-to-university education ratio. Third, tuition and private education expenses had a negative impact on household expenditures after excluding education expenditure.
The issue of children′s education is the most important issue for all households in Korea. It is certain that the issue of private education for children is the first issue among household′s issues. This study is to recognize the current pictures of household primate education of Korean households. Also, whether the expenditure of private education effect the economic will-being of household. The data for this study was"the 3th Korean Labor Panal", conducted by Lobor in Korea. The sample was 1950 households from the panel data. The results of this study was as following: 1. The mean of monthly private education expenditure was 149273won for all households and 217,100won for households with high school students. 2. Almost 70% households had economic burden for private education expenditure. 0% households had no economic burden. 3. The factors of influencing the level of economic burden for private education were mother′s education level, mother′s job, the number of children, living location, monthly income, total asset of household′s. The factors of influencing the amount of monthly private education expenditure positively were living in 4. The economic well-being of household was analyzed by socio-economic variables, household′s financial variables, monthly private education expenditure, the level of economic burden of private education. The purpose of this study was to analyze clothing expenditure patterns of urban, rural/farm, and rural/non-farm households. A sample of 23,994 households was selected from the 1996 National Survey of Household Income and Expenditure, and 1996 Farm Household Economy Survey. Frequency and regression analyses were used. Major findings were: 1) clothing expenditure of rural/farm households were significantly lower than that of urban and rural/non-farm households; 2) in terms of clothing expenditure by categories, urban and rural-non-farm households have similar expenditure pattern; 3) clothing expenditures relative to income were lower than 1 for all three groups; 4) clothing expenditures relative to total income for urban and rural/non-farm households were higher than 1, while that for rural/farm households was lower than 1; 5) a major factor explaining clothing expenditure differences between urban and rural consumers was the household head's occupation.
The purpose of this study is to consider the socio-economic development and policy in each five-year economic development plan influences of urban households and to seek a plan of household stability and reasonable consumption expenditure on the aspect of Family economics. Data is based on the "Annual Report on the Family Income and Expenditure survey" of the National Bureau of Statistic Economic Planning Board, Republic of Korea and analyzed as follows: First, in analysis to the structure of consumption expenditure, the averaged percentage of each item to total consumption expenditure is estimated by each Economics Development Plan year. Second, in order to analyze the relative importance value of household consumption expenditure, priority correlation order is derived from comparison of characteristics of household consumption expenditures by multiple regression analysis. Third the patterns of consumption expenditure of salary and wage earner's households in all cities are estimated by the household consumption function, marginal propensity to consume, and income elasticity, according to socio-economic variable, and demographic variable. In the recent Korean economy, income level of household is increased and consumption expenditure level is largely increased because of the execution of economic development plan. But the improvement of income derives the increasment of the consumption needs and over-consumption trend is spread due to the import liberization. And above all, the reasonable household management and economic life are needed.
The purpose of this study was to compare the housing expenditure patterns of elderly and non-elderly households. The raw data from the National Survey of Family Income and Expenditure 1996were used for this study. The final sample was 12,007 households. Generally, elderly households tended to spend less on housing expenditure than non-elderly ones. Also the effects of the household characteristics on housing expenditure were significantly different between elderly and non-elderly house holds. the household characteristics significantly effected on housing expenditure of both two house holds were household income, household size, and location of the residence. Occupation, duction, and sex of the head were household characteristics which had more influences on housing expenditure of elderly households.
Catastrophic health expenditure refers to when a household spends more than 40 percent of disposable income for out-of-pocket-expenses for healthcare. This study investigates the percentage of South Korean household which experienced the catastrophic health expenditure between 2006 and 2016 with the National Survey of Tax and Benefit and the Household Income and Expenditure Survey data. Percentage of households with the catastrophic health expenditure and tread tests were conducted with weight variable. The results of the National Survey of Tax and Benefit and the Household Income and Expenditure Survey showed 2.17% and 2.92% of households experienced the catastrophic health expenditure in 2016. In trend analysis, the National Survey of Tax and Benefit showed a statistically significant decreasing trend in the proportion of households with the catastrophic health expenditure (annual percentage change [APC]=-4.03, p<0.0001). However, the Household Income and Expenditure Survey revealed a statistically significant increasing trend (APC=1.43, p<0.0001). In conclusion, this study suggests that optimal healthcare alternatives are needed for the catastrophic health expenditure and monitoring low-income households.
The purposes of this study were to identify education expenditure and to analyze contributing factors to total education expenditure for two children among married couples. For these purposes, total sample of 1,256 married couples those having two children of both pre-school aged and school aged were selected, and total sample was divided into four groups by first child's school aged; those were pre-school aged(375), elementary school aged(385), middle & high school aged(248) & college aged(248). Statistics used for the analysis were frequencies, means, percentile, and tobit and OLS analysis. The results were as follows. First, the households those having the first child of pre-school aged didn't spent for public education expenditure, while public education xpenditure of school aged increased continuously. The households having the first child of high school aged spent the most private education expenditure among four groups, however, total education expenditure of the households having the first child in college aged spent the most education expenditure were household head's age, family size, home ownership and financial asset amount, and elementary school-aged's factors were household head's age, education level, home ownership and total household income. Also, household head's education level, wife's expectation of future economy, residence, total household income had significant effects on total education expenditure in middle and high school-aged, and household head's job, home ownership, contact with neighborhood, residence and Engel's coefficient were significant variables in college aged.
This study examined the levels and trends in the household expenditure in both public and private education. Between 1982 and 2000, the level of the total educational expenditure increased by 5% in each year on average, increased by 2.2% for public education, and by 11.4% for private education. On the public educational expenditure, the consumption expenditure elasticity was 0.2 and the price elasticity was 1.49. On the private educational expenditure, the consumption expenditure elasticity was 1.5 and became below 1 after 1998, and the price elasticity was 2.63. The results indicated that the educational expenditure was necessary rather than luxurious and there was excess demand for private education. The level of the educational expenditure would continue to increase without reforms both in the supply and demand sides.
