Technological Innovation Induced Growth of Engineering Industry SMEs: Case Studies in Bangalore

  • This paper, based on two engineering industry SME case studies, traces the origin and process of technological innovations enabling the development and introduction of new products leading to market expansion and enterprise growth. The study throws light on how entrepreneurs played a decisive role in recognizing market opportunities, building up crucial in-house technological capability, supplementing it with appropriate external assistance, to carry out technological innovations. A constant interaction with its customers is in-built into the system. As a result, the SMEs could achieve successful product innovations leading to their gradual growth, over time. Finally, based on the observations and inferences derived out of the two cases, a theoretical construct of the growth of innovation in SMEs is postulated. This is done linking the three stages of their development: (i) start-up and stabilizing, (ii) building up technological capability and implementing innovations; and (iii) opening up of new markets resulting in firm growth.

  • As a result of the rapid economic growth and birth control policy, China is experiencing low fertility rates and increasing life expectancy, which makes Chinese population aging very quickly and unprepared for their retired life. The reverse mortgage may be an attractive option for the elderly because it is a loan against a house that they do not have to pay back as long as they live there. In this paper, in order to introduce the reverse mortgage scheme in China the factors that could influence the demand of reverse mortgage are reviewed and the Chinese market environment is analyzed. Then the principal component analysis is performed in order to recommend the regions or cities that have higher potential for successful implementation of a reverse mortgage than any other ones in China.

Relationship between Stock Market & Housing Market Trends and Liquidity (주식시장과 주택시장의 동향 및 유동성과의 관계)

  • Governments of each country are actively implementing fiscal expansion policies to recover the real economy after Corona 19. In Korea, the stock market and housing market are greatly affected as liquidity in the market increases due to the implementation of disaster subsidies and welfare policies. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between stock market and housing market trends and liquidity. Data were collected by the Bank of Korea and Kookmin Bank. The analysis period is from January 2000 to December 2020, and monthly data are used. For empirical analysis, the rate of change from the same month of the previous year was calculated for each variable, and numerical analysis, index analysis, and model analysis were performed. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the stock index showed a positive(+) relationship with the house price, while a negative(-) relationship with M2. Previous studies have suggested that, in general, an increase in liquidity affects the stock market and the housing market, and inflation also rises. In this study, it was found that the stock market and the housing market had an effect on each other. However, it was investigated that liquidity showed an inverse relationship with the stock market and had no relationship with the housing market. Through this, this study estimated that there is a time difference in the relationship between liquidity and the stock market & housing market.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze how the appreciation or recognition of quick response systems, with the utilization of technology, can improve operations for businesses in the DongDaeMoon fashion market. A survey was conducted from April 25 to May 10 in 2007, among owners and designers of wholesale shops in the DongDaeMoon fashion market. Data was collected from 270 subjects, and general descriptive and comparative statistical analysis was applied to acquire various parameters. Firstly, the product types within the DongDaeMoon fashion market were small and medium quantity batch production systems. The majority of businesses adopted the production strategy of outsourcing through subcontracted factories. To re-order, a fashion merchandising required 2 to 3 days. Secondly, the design sources of fashion merchandises were national fashion brands, popular items within the same industries, and also fashion magazines. New products was made within 4 days after a sample item was received. Business acquaintances were fashion retail shops of DongDaeMoon, and internet or home shopping companies. Thirdly, the recognition of importance and effects of quick response systems was difference between high and low group of the utilization of technology in the DongDaeMoon fashion market.

  • As the Korean construction market in the apartment housing has changed to a housing consumer focused market, interest and importance on efficient use and management on existing buildings has increased rather than demand for new buildings. Interest of housing consumers on apartment house quality has increased in this market paradigm, and this spontaneously is connected to quality flaw related defect disputes and lawsuits that the importance of defect diagnosis has continuously increased. This defect diagnosis is directly connected to maintenance charges in defect dispute and lawsuit processes that rather objective and highly credible progress of duty is required. However, most defect diagnosis firms today that progress defect diagnosis are using different diagnosis methods and depend on the experience of experienced professionals that there is no standardized defect diagnosis process. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide common defect diagnosis process model for defect diagnosis firms utilizing the BPMN (Business Process Modeling Notation) modeling method. It is expected that this will contribute to professional and reliable task performances of concerned defect diagnosis workers. Furthermore, it is expected that design lawsuit damage will be substantially reduced by standardizing defect diagnosis processes.

  • Carbon dioxide emission trading market would play very important role in the global effort to cope with climate change. In KOREA, the energy consumption and geen house gas emission of various industry would be controlled by the low carbon-green growth law which was established at 2009. The paper industry as one of major industries in terms of energy consumption has been greatly required to prepare action plan for addressing this regulation and reduction of carbon dioxide emission. In this study, the current states of carbon dioxide emission trading market were analyzed in terms of practical responses of the paper industry. And the various action plans including CDM projects for paper industry were suggested.

  • Coffee houses' key factors to succeed in the market are not only a basic element -the taste of coffees- but also brand image, satisfaction and consumer fidelity that food service industries take into account overall. The goal of this study is to find out the relations among brand image, brand attitude and fidelity. To this end, coffee was selected among other products due to its characteristic that the difference of its quality between brands is not very noticeable. Through an analysis of each coffee house's brand image in this saturated coffee market, the influence of brand image on consumers' preference was found out. In this process, not only a strategy for each coffee house's growth and development but also the relations between brand image, brand attitude and brand fidelity would be researched, resulting in a creation of more systematic strategies.

  • This study aims to understand the characteristics of sports marketing businesses of the 10 largest advertising agencies which lead the advertising market in Korea. To do that, the present author has investigated into the traits of the advertising market in Korea and how the characteristics are connected to sports businesses of the advertising agencies, with a focus on the current condition of sport marketing businesses of the agencies. The sports marketing business of the 10 largest advertising agencies in Korea was described by the fact that they did not create profits through sports business but just conducted their sports marketing activities mainly related to the sponsorship and event planning for communicating their parent companies. Such the characteristics of the advertising agencies is attributed to their nature that they are in-house agencies of large companies. The agencies engage in a variety of sports promotion sectors aligned with the intended business directions of their sponsors, however they are encountering considerable challenges in the aspect of sports business focused on property.

A Catch-up Strategy of the K-Pop Firms in the Latecomer Environment (후발산업국 환경에서의 K-Pop기업 추격전략)

  • The rise of K-Pop in the latecomer environment is unusual. There is little research on K-Pop from the catch-up perspective though it would yield some insight into a strategic direction of creative industries in the latecomer environment. Thus, this study aims to compare the firm capability, market development, and product strategy of K-Pop firms with ones of manufacturing firms during the catch-up period. It reveals first that K-Pop firms developed project execution capability to carry out discrete projects effectively by adopting in-house (vertical) system in music production and increasing the size of firms. Second, they pursued global market and utilized the window of opportunities based on a proven music genre. Third, K-Pop firms pursued the incremental innovation in the product development. Since these characteristics have many similarities with the catch-up strategy in the manufacturing sector, Korean catch-up experience could provide valuable insight into the development of creative industries in Korea.

  • Consumers have paid attention to various functions of PC's nowadays from its efficiency in the past. This study set limits to adapted computers by consumer needs for their residence facilities and ubiquitous environment in our society. The purpose of this study is to suggest high potentialities of adapted computers and it's design for materializing house ubiquitous system. It has come out from analyzing PC market. The result is that Barebone PC, a kind of set PC, could be one of the most actual way for materializing house ubiquitous system. This study suggests many potentialities of Barebone PC which invites modular system. The existing Barebone PC is a kind of semimanufactures, however the new Barebone PC in this study is a expanded concept of modular system that connected to the area of the electric home appliances. This is inspected by analyzing the relation among potentialities and impotance of set PC design and module.
