  • A new class of heat transfer fluid with higher thermal conductivity, called nanofluids has been developed by Dr. S. Choi about decade ago. Many exciting experimental and theoretical results have been reported worldwide to predict the thermal conductivity enhancement of nanofluids, however, they sometimes show excessive large discrepancies between each other. This kind of disagreements in thermal conductivity data is partly ascribable to the accuracy of the measuring apparatus, that is, mostly used THM(transient hot-wire method). New thermal conductivity measuring method whose principle is different from that of conventional THM is proposed in this article and measurements and uncertainty analysis were made for the three nanofluid samples with different particle concentration of pure, 2% and 4% of AlN nanofluids.

  • Flow angle with Swirl in a horizontal circular tube and a cylindrical annuli were experimentally studied for its visualization. This present investigation deals with flow angle, flow visualization studies and vortex core by using oil smoke and a hot wire anemometer for Re = 40,000 and 50000 at X/D = 41, 59 and 71 in a horizontal circular tube. In the swirl air flow, a vortex core was formed at high swirl intensity along the test tube. The flow angle and the vortex core depended on the swirl intensity along the test tube. The results of flow angles with swirl measured by flow visualization and hot wire reasonably agree with those of Sparrow One of the primary objectives of this research was to measure the flow angle with swirl in a cylindrical annuli along the test tube for different Reynolds numbers. The Reynolds number for these measurements ranged from 60,000 to 100,000 with L/D = a to 4.

  • To reduce the strength of tip vortex of the fixed wing, a horizontal wing-let splitted into two parts was utilized, and the interaction between vortices generated by these wing-lets was investigated by the hot-wire anemometry. The process of vortex forming and merging was clarified by measurements of velocity vectors and their contours at five downstream cross-sections; 0.05C(chord length), 0.2C, 0.5C, 1.0C and 2.0C. Both vortex-lets formed by each wing-lets rotate counterclockwise and merge into a larger single vortex within a short downstream distance, 0.5C in this case. The strength of the merged tip vortex turned out to become smaller than that of the plain wing tip near the vortex core.

  • Flow patterns were measured in an unshrouded centrifugal impeller. The flow rate in measurements was fixed at the value corresponding to a nearly zero incidence at the blade inlet. By using a single slanted hot-wire probe and a Kiel probe mounted on the impeller hub disk, the 3-D relative velocities and the rotary stagnation pressures were measured in seven circumferential planes from the inlet to the outlet of the impeller rotating at 700rpm, which diameter is 0.39 meter, and the static pressures and the slip factor at the impeller outlet were calculated from the measured values. From the measured data, the primary/secondary flows, the leakage flows, the wake-jet flows, static pressure distribution on blade surfaces and the wake production mechanism in the impeller passage were investigated.

  • The near field structure of round turbulent jets with initially asymmetric velocity distribution is investigated experimentally. Experiments were carried out using a constant temperature hot-wire anemometry system to measure streamwise velocity in the jets. The measurements were undertaken across the jet at various streamwise stations in a range starting from the jet exit plane and up to a downstream location of twelve diameters. The experimental results include the distribution of mean and instantaneous velocities, vorticity field, turbulence intensity, and the Reynolds shear stress. The asymmetry of the jet exit plane was obtained by using circular cross-section pipes with a bend at the upstream of the exit. Three pipes were used for this study: A straight pipe, 90 and 160 degree-bended pipes. Therefore, at the upstream of the pipe exit, the secondary flow through the bend and the mean streamwise velocity distribution could be controlled by changing the curvature of pipes.

  • Free jet was investigated experimentally and numerically in range of Reynolds number from 9900 to 21000. The working fluid was air; the mean velocity components and turbulent quantities were measured by a hot-wire anemometer. In numerical computations, the governing partial differential equations of elliptic type were solved with conventional k- ${\epsilon}$ turbulence model. The measurements show that the jet increased linearly in flow direction, and that similarity for each turbulent quantity such as Reynolds shear stress, or turbulent kinetic energy was revealed in the fully developed region. The computational results show good agreements with experiments.

  • Cyclone separators are widely used for cleaning gas streams or for catalyst recovery. For many years, the complexity of the gas flow pattern in cyclones has been a matter of many experimental and theoretical work. At present, precise flow measurements have been performed by means of LDA and hot-wire anemometry (Patterson and Munz, 1996; Hoekstra et al., 1999; Peng et al., 2002). In the theoretical work, Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes are frequently employed for simulating cyclone gas-particle flows(Hoekstra et al., 1999). (omitted)

  • In this study, the modification of turbulent boundary layer flow by local wall vibration is investigated. The wall is locally vibrated using a wall deformation actuator, which moves up and down at the frequencies of 100Hz and 50Hz. Simultaneous measurements of the streamwise velocities in the spanwise direction are performed at several wall-normal and streamwise locations using an in-house multi-channel hot wire anemometer and a spanwise hot-wire-probe rake. The mean velocity is reduced in most places due to the wall vibration and its reduced amount becomes small as flow goes downstream. Interestingly, the mean velocity is found to increase very near the wall and near the actuator. This is due to the motion induced by the streamwise vortices which are generated by the downward motion of the actuator. In case of the streamwise velocity fluctuations, their magnitude increases as compared to the unperturbed turbulent boundary layer, and the increased amount becomes small as the flow moves downstream. The modified flow field at the forcing frequency of 50Hz is not much different from that of 100Hz, except the reduced amount of modification.
