Sangdong scheelite deposit is confirmed to have been formed by replacement of limestone beds by metasomatic mineralization. Mineralogical zonal distribution and filling temperatures are related with order of its formation and tungsten mineralization. The first formed garnet-pyroxene zone, left in the margins of the ore body, shows the highest filling temperature of fluid inclusions in pyroxene, averaging $420^{\circ}C$. The central part of the ore body, mainly composed of quartz-mica-scheelite, shows higher fi11ing temperatures of fluid inclusions in quartz, than hornblende-quartz-scheelite zone surrounding the quartz-mica-scheelite zone, averaging $240^{\circ}C$. The distribution of highter filling temperatures above average temperature is applicable to the richest part of scheelite distribution. Generally scheelite shows higher filling temperature by about 20 to $100^{\circ}C$ than quartz in a given sample. The crystallization temperature of the main phase of scheelite deposition is $311^{\circ}C$ at the pressure of 230 to 500 bars at Sangdong area. Gas-rich inclusions in the pyroxene are homogenized into either gas or liquid phase or into both phases in a given crystal of the pyroxene, which suggests boiling at the formation of skarn.
Gabbroic rocks in which titanomagnetite orebodies are embedded were emplaced in Precambrian metasedimentary rocks. Hornblende K-Ar ages for equigranula and gneissic gabbros were obtained to be $1021.8{\pm}14.5$ Ma and $1468.4{\pm}20.8$ Ma, respectively. Biotite-granite has an age of 116.4 Ma, which has corresponded to Daebo granite. Amphibole minerals of the gabbroic rock and the magnetite orebodies belong to calcic amphibole group such as ferroan pargasite, pargasite, and ferro-pargasite. The gabbroic rocks have unusually high content of $TiO_2$ ranging from 0.88 to 6.03 wt.% with an average value of 3.46 wt.% as compared to normal gabbroic rock with 1.32 wt.% in $TiO_2$. Incompatible elements such as Ba and Sr of the gabbros are negatively correlated with $SiO_2$. In contrast, Co and Cr have a positive correlation with $SiO_2$, suggesting a normal differentiation trend of gabbroic magma.
Granitic complex in the Woosanbong area is composed of schistose granite, two-mica granite, biotite granite, porphyritic granite and pink feldspar granite in order of intrusion. In their boundary aspects, the gradational change between porphyritic granite and pink feldspar granite is observed in field relations. All the granites of the complex are classified to quartz monzonite by the modal compositions following Bateman's classification (1961) with the exception of pink feldspar granite which belongs to granite according to the petrographical classification. The first three granites are characterized by highly development of vein and/or lens-like pegmatites in their bodies, and two others contain green hornblende uniquely. These leucocratic two-mica granite shows an unusual character in ratio of muscovite to biotite 1: 0.7 to 1:13, and contains dominantly microcline. The content of muscovite varies in places in the field. Under the polarizing microscope it is revealed that the muscovite flakes occur as the products altered from biotite partly or completely, and it usually associates with chlorite flakes nearby. These features, therefore, suggests that biotite probably has been altered to muscovite and chlorite by hydration during deuteric processes. At the same stage, sericitization of plagioclase by the hydrolytic decomposition, and transformation of orthoclase to microcline may be taken place. Accordingly, it is obviously permissible to consider the two-mica granite as a kind of 'apo-granite' by deuteric alterations during the consolidation of magma.
The Bobae sericite deposit occurs in rhyodacite of the Cretaceous volcanogenic sedimentary rocks, Upper Yucheon Group, in the western part of Pusan. The alteration zones are divided into the phyllie and prophylitic zone based on the mineral assemblages. The phyllic zone is subdivided into three subzones; Andalusite-Pyrophyllite, Sericite and Albite subzones. Oxides vs. $Al_2O_3$ contents show variations corresponding to mineral assemblage in each alteration zone. On the basis of bulk chemical compositions, it was found that $SiO_2$ increases in the Andalusite-Pyrophyllite subzone and $K_2O$ in the Sericite subzone. The oxygen, hydrogen and sulfur isotope analysis indicates that the fluids were originally derived from the residual magmatic solution. It has been mixed with abundant meteoric water later. The ore-forming temperatures obtained from sericite (illite) geothermometer are about $250{\sim}350^{\circ}C$. Considering the phase stability relation, PoT conditions of the andalusite-pyrophyllite subzone were estimated to be less than 0.5 kb and almost $400^{\circ}C$, respectively. The K-Ar ages of sericites indicate that the clay deposit is genetically related to the Cretaceous-Paleogene Masan Hornblende-Biotite Granite.
The detailed crystal chemistry of ilmenite from the Hadong massif was studied by the EPMA, M ssbauer spectroscopy, and Rietveld structural refinement using X-ray powder diffraction data. The ilmenite-bearing anorthosite shows complicated mineral assemblage which consists of plagioclase, clinopyroxene, hornblende, biotite, chlorite, apatite, allanite, and zircon. Anorthite is andesine in composition (Ab 28-57), and clinopyroxene drops in ferro-hypersthene (Fs 62-70). Ilmenite is trigonal symmetry with R space group, whose structure shows the alternation of Fe2+ (M1 site) octahedral layer and Ti (M2 site) layer along c axis. M ssbauer spectroscopy indicates that there are three doubles which assigned to couple of Fe2+($\delta$=0.812, 0.890mm/sec) and one Fe3+($\delta$=0.303mm/sec) in octahedral sites. Their Fe3+/$\Sigma$Fe is 0.065 and chemical formula is established as Fe2+0.94Fe3+0.07Ti0.97O3 using both EPMA and M ssbauer analysis. Rietveld structural refinement reveals that site occupancies of Fe in M1 and Ti in M2 are 91.2% and 89.4%, respectively. This implies that Ti and Fe2+ are alternatively occupy M1 and M2 sites. In addition, smaller M2 site is more preferable to Fe3+ occupancy over M1.
The basic rocks distributed in the Okchon paleogeosynclinal zone have been previously considered as intrusive in majority, but as sedimentary parensis in few variety. The present study is to find out some clues to conclude otherwise, if any, by clarifying 1) the nature and characteristics of the rocks, 2) type of the associated sedimentary rocks if any, and 3) their occurrence in related to regional geologic structure. The finding are as follows: 1) The basic rocks are identified and classified to hornblende gabbro, amphibolite, basalt and andesite (in part metamorphosed to meta-volcanics), green schist and peridotite(which appears in separate locality from the others). 2) Associated sedimentary rocks which appear to overlie the basic rocks are known as Kunjasan and Baekwhasan formations. The two formations are probably same, but been used differently by different authers at different localities. The rocks is exclusively consisted of cherty looking siliceous quartzite and some localitis it shows very calcarious nature. The formation seems to indicate a sort of pelagic siliceous sediments although it contain some pebbles. 3) The basic rock suites are always underlain by the same continuous, great thrust, which separates the Okchon paleogeosyncline zone from the neogeosynclinal zone in the area studied. The comparison of Okchon basic rocks suite to the ophiolite suites in other parts of the world indicates some similarity with which the writers suggested the probalility of Okchon basic rocks being ophiolites that occur along ancient geosuture line now represented by the great thrust.
The geology of Nogsan industrial estate area, Pusan, Korea consists mainly of andesitic rocks, rhyolitic rocks and hornblende granite. They are then intruded by basic and acidic dikes. All of the igneous activities in this area are in Cretaceous time, that is the lower part of Silla group in Gyoungsang basin. Andesitic volcanic rocks are distributed in two separate basines: Saengok basin and Doodong basin. Although both basines contain andesite and andesitic breccia(Kab), younger andesitic activity was more active to the western Doodong basin giving very little influence on the eastern Saengok basin. Sediments in the area are quarternaly alluvium and colluvium. Alluvium is very thick and consists mainly of silt and clay deposited as delta deposits at the mouth of Nakdong river. Colluvium in the area is short distributary channel deposits. The area is largely filled with socks and sediments to build industrial estates especially on the delta deposits at Shinhodong area and on the shoreline mud bed between Yongwondong and Shinhodong. A careful investigation to avoid the possibility of a large scale mud flow is suggested because it could be trigered by many reason such as an earthquake or a flood on the land where a heavily loaded salt-water may soaked into the muddy bed lying on the granitic basement gently dipping toward the ocean. Althouth the area is in the Yangsan fault zone no ground evidence of fault can be seen despite the RESTEC sattlite image gives excelent traces of linearments in the area.
Scoria is a bomb-sized, generally vesicular pyroclast that is red or black in color and light in weight. In this study, scoria from Cheju was examined for the use as a sorbent. It is composed of plagioclase, olivine, hornblende, pyroxene, and glass, with an average composition of 49.84% SiO$_2$, 14.07% A1$_2$O$_3$, End 9.14% Fe$_2$O$_3$. Studies on kinetic isotherm sorption of Zn(II) onto scoria under various parameters such as initial zinc concentration, particle size, and adsorbent/adsorbate ratio were carried out using an agitated batch. The results suggest that the smaller scoria size and the larger adsorbent/adsorbate ratio produce the higher degree of Zn(II) removal. More effective removal also appears at lower initial Zn concentration. The sorption behavior of Zn(II) onto scoria seems to be mainly controlled by cation exchange. Studies on equilibrium isotherm sorption of other heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Cd) onto scoria were also conducted and compared with those onto powdered activated carbon (PAC) and non-organic matter scoria (NOS), The results suggest that the Cheju scoria has the slightly higher sorption capability than PAC and NOS, and the order of the effective sorption onto scoria and PAC is Pb > Cu > Zn > Cd. The monometal sorption onto scoria is more stronger than the competitive sorption.
Objectives: This study is for characteristics of asbestos occurrence (NOA, naturally occurring asbestos) from the Gapyeong area and its host rocks, serpentinites. Methods: Representative samples are collected from the serpentinite bodies, following degrees of hydrothermal alteration and metamorphism, after about 2 year field trips. Mineralogical, morphological and optical characteristics of the asbestos and host rocks are confirmed by PLM, XRD EPMA and SEM results. Results: The serpentinites are dunites and harzburgites, and host asbestos, including chrysotile, tremolite and actinolite. The asbestos chrysotiles are found as veins ranging from several millimeters to several centimeters in thickness, while asbestos-tremolite and -actinolite occur along cracks and fractures ranging up to ten centimeters in thickness. The chryostiles occur mainly as cross and slip fibers, while the amphibole asbestos is found as vein, slip and oblique fibers. More tremolitic grains are colorless and commonly show elongated or fiber shapes, whereas the magnesio hornblende grains mainly show light green and occur as subhedral to euhedral diamond grains. Conclusions: Overall characteristics of serpentinites from the Gapyeong area are similar to worldwide orogenic-related Alpine type ultramafic rocks serpentinized and serpentinites in South Chungcheong-do Province, Korea, and occurrences of asbestos are similar to those of the ultramafic bodies in South Chungcheong-do Province.
The Bulgugsa acidic igneous rocks of the late Cretaceous age are largely distributed in Busan area, which is located in the southeastern corner of the Korean Peninsula. These igneous rocks comprise in ascending order, felsite, dacitic-rhyolitic welded tuffs, granite porphyry and granitic rocks. The former three members represent the early phase of volcanic activities, so that they are named as Jangsan volcanic rocks. The granitic rocks consist of granodiorite, hornblende biotite granite, Kumjongsan granite, fine grained granite, and Daebyen granite, represent the late phase of igneous activities. The Kumjongsan grainte, the largest pluton of the granitic mass, emplaced between two great vertical faults trending NNE. New chemical analyses of 33 rock samples of these acidic rocks are given. Their chemical compositions are generally similar to those of the late Mesozoic acidic igneous rocks of the northern Ashio mountains, and C-Zone granite group of the Ogcheon geosyncline, with their characteristic variation trends of several oxides. Their chemical compositions also show that $Al_2O_3$ is high value, and differentiation index is high, too. Systematically developing joints in Kumjungsan granite are divisible into two types at least. One is the NS-N $20^{\circ}E$ trendirig, $85^{\circ}{\sim}90^{\circ}$ dipping type of joint system which coincides with the trends of distribution of the granite mass and the dikes intruding this granite. Joints of this type may be cooling joints generated as tension cracks. The other is the $N60^{\circ}{\sim}70^{\circ}W$ or $N40^{\circ}{\sim}60^{\circ}E$ trending type of joint systems. It is considered that. joints belonging to this type may be shear joint occurring under the state of south-north tectonic couple acting at the east and west side of the granite mass. Igneous activities of the the Bulgugsa acidic igneous rocks in Busan area was taken place as. follows, formation of the magma reservoir, eruption and intrusion of felsite, consolidation of vents. and increasing vapor pressure in magma reservoir, eruption of pyroclastic flows, caldera collapse, intrusion of granite porphyry, and intrusion of granitic rocks at the latest stage.
