  • Although many studies have described the physiological effects of bee products, such as honey, propolis, pollen, and royal jelly, the health benefits of honeycomb remain incompletely characterized. We performed a comparative study of the antioxidant properties of honey and honeycomb extracts using two different solvents (water and 95% ethanol). The results showed that the total phenolic and flavonoid content of the honeycomb extract was higher than that of the honey extract. They also demonstrated that water was more effective than ethanol in extracting total phenols. The in vitro antioxidant properties of the water honeycomb extract were evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and nitric oxide (NO) radical scavenging assays and ferrous ion chelating and reducing power assays. The antioxidant activity of the honeycomb extract exhibited was higher than that of the honey extract. The 50% effective concentrations (EC50) of the honeycomb extract were 7.3±0.26 mg/ml for scavenging DPPH radicals, 6.1±0.22 mg/ml for scavenging NO radicals, 6.9±0.44 mg/ml for chelating ferrous ions, and 8.2±0.11 mg/ml for reducing power. A correlation analysis revealed that the total phenolics and flavonoids of the honeycomb extract were the major contributors to the radical scavenging activity, ferrous ion chelating, and reducing power. The honeycomb extract was effective in protecting biological systems against various oxidative stresses in vitro. This is the first report on the antioxidant properties of honeycomb.

  • Honeycomb sandwich composite(HSC) structures have been widely used in aircraft and military industry owing to their light weight and high stiffness. Mechanical properties of honeycomb core materials are needed for accurate analysis of the sandwich composites. In this study. theoretical formula for effective elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio of honeycomb core materials was established using an energy method considering the bending, axial and shear deformations of honeycomb core walls. Finite-element analysis results obtained by using commercial FEA code, ABAQUS 6.3 were comparable to the theoretical ones. In addition, we performed tensile test of HSC plates and analyzed deformation behaviors and interlaminar stresses through its FEA simulation. An increased shear stress along the interface between surface and honeycomb core layers was shown to be the main reason for interfacial delamination in HSC plate under tensile loading.

  • The honeycomb composite joint structure designed for application to a tilting KTX railroad car body is subjected to bending loads of a cantilever type. Honeycomb sandwich composite panel-joint attached in the real tilting car body was fabricated and sectioned as several beam-joint specimens for the bending test. The fracture behaviors of these specimens under static loads were different from those under cyclic loads. Static bending loads caused shear deformation and fracture in the honeycomb core region, while fatigue cyclic bend loading caused delamination along the interface between the composite skin and the honeycomb core, and/or caused a fracture in the welded part jointed with the steel under-frame. These fracture behaviors could occur in other industrial honeycomb composite joints with similar sub-structures, and be used for improving design parameters of a honeycomb composite joint structure.

  • The bending strength characteristics and local deformation behaviors of honeycomb sandwich composites were investigated using three-point bending experiment and finite element simulation with a real model of honeycomb core. Two kinds of cell sizes of honeycomb core, two kinds of skin layer thicknesses, perfect bonding specimen as well as initial delamination specimen were used for analysis of stress and deformation behaviors of honeycomb sandwich beams. Various failure modes such as skin layer yielding, interfacial delamination, core shear deformation and local buckling were considered. Its simulation results were very comparable to the experimental ones. Consequently, cell size of honeycomb core and skin layer thickness had dominant effects on the bending strength and deformation behaviors of honeycomb sandwich composites. Specimens of large core cell size and thin skin layer showed that bending strength decreased by $30\~68\%$.

  • In Korean tilting trains, honeycomb composite panels are used for high speed and light weight. The side wall of a tilting train consists of an aluminum honeycomb coated with carbon-fiber-reinforced epoxy skin and a nomex honeycomb panel as the main structure, with glass wool inserted between the panels. In this study, based on ASTM E2249-02, we measure the intensity sound transmission loss (TL) of the honeycomb composite panels. Using mass law deviation (MLD), we estimate the sound insulation performance of the honeycomb composite panels in terms of their weight and explore the feasibility of substituting a conventional corrugated steel panel. The transmission-loss data of the honeycomb composite panels obtained in the study will be used to establish noise-reduction measures for train compartments.

  • Recently, various kinds of study on light weight structure are performing in the world. The Al honeycomb sandwich structural type adopt for improvement of lightness and structural stability to major part structure of aircraft or spacecraft. Adhesion badness properties of adhesive and adhesion properties of fillet mainly studied about al honeycomb structure. But study for adhesive properties of sandwich construction with surface treatment of Aluminum alloy barely performed. In this study, adhesive film was used between Al and honeycomb core of honeycomb panel[1]. The study for adhesive properties of sandwich construction with surface treatment of AA 5052 skin was performed.

  • The sound insulation capacity of honeycomb sandwich plates which have relatively higher strength ratios to weight is poorer than those of uniform and another sandwich plates. Therefore, improvement of the sound insulation capacity of the honeycomb sandwich plate which has a meritof lightness is required to use it in automobile and rapid rail road industries. In this study, to improving the sound insulation capacity of the honeycomb sandwich plate, the sound transmission loss of the structure is experimentally investigated by adding a viscoelastic damping layer, The effective add position and thickness of the layer were investigated from the viewpoints of both sound transmission loss and improved sound transmission loss over the frequency range from 800Hz to 10kHz.

  • The mechanical properties of aluminum honeycomb on the direction of axial crushing under quasistatic loading test was investigated. The crushing process was simulated numerically by full-scale finite element models. Simulations reproduce the experimental results both qualitatively as well as quantitatively. From the investigation, we suggested the constitutive model of energy absorbing honeycomb structure for large scale impact analysis. Real impact test of the WB(Moving Deformable Barrier) was carried and compared with finite element simulation. Constitutive model used in the numerical simulation had a good correlation with experiment. By suggesting the optimizing method fur honeycomb cell configuration design, relationship between cell configuration and crush strength is studied.

  • The fabrication process of the honeycomb filter was investigated using synthesized cordierite with the addition of pore former and extrusion additives (either organic matter or graphite). Also, the effect of additives on the resultant properties of honeycomb filter such as porosity, thermal expansion coefficient and mechanical strength were investigated. With increasing the organic matter up to 10 wt%, porosity was increased but compressive strength was decreased. With increasing the graphite content, however, both porosity and compressive strength were increased. The specimen with an optimum processing condition (C-17A30G, sintering at $1150^{\circ}C$) was demonstrated 59% in porosity, 69 MPa in compressive strength, and $2.4{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C\;(25{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$) in thermal expansion coefficient, which physical properties are appropriate for the honeycomb filter applications.

  • The aim of this paper is to perform the experiment and the numerical simulation for investigating the heat transfer in a regenerator system with ceramic honeycomb and to suggest a useful correlation for optimization of the regenerator system. For achieving this, the effects of some parameters were investigated, e. g., switching time, cell size and length of honeycomb on the mean temperature efficiency. The measured temperatures by R-type thermocouples were compared with the predictions by means of the commercial package, STAR-CD. A useful correlation for thermal efficiency was newly proposed as a function of the normalized switching time, defined in terms of switching time, cell size and length of honeycomb. The results showed that the thermal efficiency is above 90% and the normalized heat exchange rate is higher than 80% when the normalized switching time is less than 1000.
