  • The development of fast reactors with complex designs and operation status requires more accurate and effective simulation. The Monte-Carlo method can generate multi-group cross-sections in arbitrary geometry without approximation on resonances treatment and leads to good results in combination with diffusion codes. However, in previous studies, the coupling of Monte-Carlo generated multi-group cross-sections (MC-MGXS) and transport solvers has shown relatively large biases in fast reactor problems. In this paper, the main contribution to the biases is proved to be the neglect of the angle-dependence of the total cross-sections. The flux-moment homogenization technique (MHT) is proposed to take into account this dependence. In this method, the angular dependence is attributed to the transfer cross-sections, keeping an independent form for the total sections. For the MET-1000 benchmark, the multi-group transport simulation results with MC-MGXS generated with MHT are improved by 700 pcm and an additional 120 pcm with higher order scattering. The factors that cause the residual bias are discussed. The core power distribution bias is also significantly reduced when MHT is used. It proves that the MCMGXS with MHT can be applicable with transport solvers in fast reactor analysis.

  • In the present work, the evolution rules for the internal variables including continuum damage factors are obtained using the thermodynamic framework, which are in turn facilitated to derive the elastic-plastic constitutive relation for the particulate composites. Using the Mori-Tanaka scheme, the homogenization on state and internal variables such as back-stress and damage factors is carried out to procure the rate independent plasticity relations. Moreover, the degradation of mechanical properties of constituents is depicted by the distinctive damages such that the phase and interfacial damages are treated individually accordingly, whereas the kinematic hardening is depicted by combining the Armstrong-Frederick and Phillips' back-stress evolutions. On the other hand, the present constitutive relation for each phase is expressed in terms of the respective damage-free effective quantities, then, followed by transformation into the damage affected overall nominal relations using the aforementioned homogenization concentration factors. An emphasis is placed on the qualitative analyses for strain localization by observing the perturbation growth instead of the conventional bifurcation analyses. It turns out that the proposed constitutive model offers a wide range of strain localization behavior depending on the evolution of various internal variable descriptions.

  • A coenzyme Q10 nanoemulsion was prepared using high pressure homogenization with different valve type conditions (A, B, and C) and cycle numbers (1, 2, and 3). The particle size, transmittance, zeta potential, and coenzyme Q10 content of the prepared coenzyme Q10 nanoemulsion were measured. The stability of the prepared coenzyme Q10 nanoemulsion was evaluated on heating ($95^{\circ}C$), freezing ($-20^{\circ}C$), and different pH (2-10) conditions. Also, the prepared coenzyme Q10 nanoemulsion was stored at different temperatures of 4, 25, and $40^{\circ}C$ for 12 weeks to evaluate its storage stability. In this study, the optimal conditions of high pressure homogenization for the preparation of a coenzyme Q10 nanoemulsion were identified to be 150 MPa, C valve, and a cycle number of 3. The results showed that the prepared coenzyme Q10 nanoemulsion had an average particle size of 40 nm, generated no deposits or floating matter when stored at either 4 or $25^{\circ}C$ for 12 weeks, and displayed excellent dispersibility and transparency when processed at different pHs (4-10) or heating ($95^{\circ}C$) and, freezing ($-20^{\circ}C$) conditions. Our results indicated that a coenzyme Q10 nanoemulsion prepared by high pressure homogenization can be used for preparing beverages in the food industry.

  • In the cosmetics industry, it is important to develop new materials for functional cosmetics such as whitening, wrinkles, anti-oxidation, and anti-aging, as well as technology to increase absorption when applied to the skin. Therefore, in this study, we tried to optimize the nanoemulsion formulation by utilizing response surface methodology (RSM), an experimental design method. A nanoemulsion was prepared by a high-pressure emulsification method using Glabridin as an active ingredient, and finally, the optimized skin absorption rate of the nanoemulsion was evaluated. Nanoemulsions were prepared by varying the surfactant content, cholesterol content, oil content, polyol content, high-pressure homogenization pressure, and cycling number of high-pressure homogenization as RSM factors. Among them, surfactant content, oil content, high-pressure homogenization pressure, and cycling number of high-pressure homogenization, which are factors that have the greatest influence on particle size, were used as independent variables, and particle size and skin absorption rate of nanoemulsion were used as response variables. A total of 29 experiments were conducted at random, including 5 repetitions of the center point, and the particle size and skin absorption of the prepared nanoemulsion were measured. Based on the results, the formulation with the minimum particle size and maximum skin absorption was optimized, and the surfactant content of 5.0 wt%, oil content of 2.0 wt%, high-pressure homogenization pressure of 1,000 bar, and the cycling number of high-pressure homogenization of 4 pass were derived as the optimal conditions. As the physical properties of the nanoemulsion prepared under optimal conditions, the particle size was 111.6 ± 0.2 nm, the PDI was 0.247 ± 0.014, and the zeta potential was -56.7 ± 1.2 mV. The skin absorption rate of the nanoemulsion was compared with emulsion as a control. As a result of the nanoemulsion and general emulsion skin absorption test, the cumulative absorption of the nanoemulsion was 79.53 ± 0.23%, and the cumulative absorption of the emulsion as a control was 66.54 ± 1.45% after 24 h, which was 13% higher than the emulsion.

  • Topology optimization is applied to determine the layout of a structural component with a specified frequency by minimizing the difference between the specified structural frequency and a given frequency. The homogenization design method is employed and the topology design problem is solved by the optimality criteria method. The value of a weighting factor in the optimality criteria plays an important role in this topology design problem. The modified optimality criteria method approximated by using the binomial expansion is suggested to determine the suitable value of the weighting factor, which makes convergence stable. If a given frequency is set as an excited frequency, it is possible to avoid resonance by moving away the specified structural frequency from the given frequency. The results of several test problems are compared with previous works and show the validity of the proposed algorithm.

  • Topology optimization is applied to determine the layout of a structure whose eigenfrequency coincides with a specified frequency. The topology optimization problem is formulated to minimize the difference between the structural frequency and a given frequency using the homogenization method and the modified optimality criteria method. It turns out that the value of a weighting factor in the updating scheme plays an important role to achieve both a suitable speed and a stable convergence of an algorithm. Unlike a constant weighting factor in previous works, it is suggested that a weight factor is varied during the iteration to control the amount of the frequency change. To substantiate the proposed approach two-dimensional structural design problems are presented and the resulted topology layouts for the specified eigenfrequency are compared to layouts for maximizing the corresponding eigenfrequency.

  • Optimal shape of the NFR suspension is studied and developed to improve the dynamic performance and reduce the vibration of the suspension system including a optical head slider. Since accurate position control and stability of the slider motion are highly required in NFR due to the narrower track width and the heavier slider than HDD slider with the low flying height, the dynamic characteristics of the suspension are very important to the mechanical performance of the system. The first natural frequencies in flexural and lateral motion of the suspension are critical factors affecting the dynamics and stability of the flying head, so that the dynamic parameters should be designed properly to avoid an excessive vibration or a crash of the slider on the disk. This paper optimizes the shape of the suspension based on homogenization method in NASTRAN and develops a new suspension shape for NFR system. The suspension is tested on experiment to verify the improvement of the dynamic characteristics.
