As the various A/V devices and home networks are delivered to users, home networks are changing to an entertainment network. It is expected that the required network bandwidth and the amount of usage of media content in home entertainment networks will be increased. Although the access networks and home networks becoming a high speed network, there remains the problems for QoS-guaranteed media content transfer in home networks. Also, in the home network, there can be network traffic caused by applications like video conferencing, video telephone, and VoIP(voice over IP) as well as inner network traffic of home network. Since media content transfer requires the real-time delivery, it is very important and basic requirement that is to transfer media content to A/V device user wants while keeping the media quality. Even though there are many middleware protocol for home networking, they provide basic device discovery and control or simple functions for QoS-guaranteed media content transfer that are not enough to provide QoS-guaranteed media transfer service that user wants. Thus, in this paper, we propose the technique based on UPnP(universal plug and play) protocol for QoS-guaranteed media content transfer in the home network. The proposed technique is compatible with UPnP and can be used with UPnP as additional functions. In this paper, we utilize VideoLAN application to verify the proposed technique. We add the additional modules that support the proposed technique's function to VideoLAN and we verify the its functions through various test scenarios.

The proliferation of advanced technologies has been altering our lifestyle and social interactions-the next frontier is the digital home. Although the future of smart homes is promising, many technical challenges must be addressed to achieve convenience and security. In this paper, we delineate the unique combination of security challenges specifically for access control and consider the challenges of how to simply and securely assign access control policies to visitors for home devices and resources. We present a set of intuitive access control policies and suggest four access control settings based on our in-person interview results. Furthermore, we propose the automated Clairvoyant access right assignment (CARA) mechanism that utilizes home owners' social relationship to automatically deduce to which class a visitor belongs. The combination of CARA and the suggested mapping provides a promising first step for home policy assignment such that nonexpert home owners can let visitors use their home network with confidence. We anticipate that future research can build on our proposed mechanisms to provide confidence to non-expert home owners for letting visitors use their home network.

Home network is a technology that provides possibilities of monitoring/controling/mutilating-recognition between optional home network machines in residences. Currently, home network or other networks like entertainment, residential electronic networks are jumbled together with heterogeneous networks in a rampaging condition. In a reality of high expectation for home networks system like the mutual application for various machines, we are required to have the unification technology for conveniences to satisfy expectations. This thesis reflects how to develop Java applications or mutual products based on convenient interfaces actually that process various sensors which create real time data stream in Java platform through Java based sensor data-stream processing embedded middleware design and realization in real time.

In this paper, we propose a novel hierarchical distributed intrusion detection system, named HNHDIDS(Home Network Hierarchical Distributed Intrusion Detection System), which is not only based on the structure of distributed intrusion detection system, but also fully consider the environment of secure home networks service. The proposed system is hierarchically composed of the one-class support vector machine(support vector data description) and local agents, in which it is designed for optimizing for the environment of secure home networks service. We support our findings with computer experiments and analysis.
Since home network system is usually set up based on the built-in system inside home at the time of construction, it has a difficulty in being compatible with new devices after construction. In this paper, we propose DBS(Dynamic Binding System) that can make links effectively among the devices located in inside and outside of home networks. Implementation of the DBS is based on the ZigBee's binding in WPAN(Wireless Personal Area Network). For this research, we constructed the system consisting of home server that contains proxy server and location server, devices inside home in which tinyOS is embedded, and mobile device that is an emulator. The communication inside home is done by IEEE 802.15.4 protocol and the communication between servers and mobile devices outside home is done by TCP/IP protocol. Regardless of device's address format, the DBS facilitates a link among the devices located inside and outside of home networks. And, introducing a new device into home network can be recognized easily by exchanging messages between devices.
In order for end-users in home networks to receive opportunities for useful services that go beyond legacy Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) services, this paper proposes a service platform that resides on the residential gateway (RG) for interworking between the home network and IPTV. This proposed service platform is called the home-oriented IPTV service platform (HISP) on the RG (HISP-RG). The proposed HISP-RG provides open architecture and functionalities to enable 3rd party IPTV service providers to locally and directly deliver home-oriented IPTV services to end-users in home networks. The HISP-RG can be an "add-on" and not a "built-in" solution for the existing standard RG. This paper introduces several home-oriented IPTV services that can be executed and delivered locally through the HISP-RG. Then, the open architecture and functionalities of the HISP-RG are defined and their requirements are specified. Finally, use cases of the HISP-RG for home-oriented IPTV services are presented.

Due to the advancements in the capabilities of smart devices and home networks, we are able to easily access multimedia contents stored in a home server. In this paper, we present a wireless media content sharing mechanism for home networks that utilizes UPnP-based DLNA technology. We also present a novel Peer-to-Peer content sharing system that is able to operate on the client as well as server. Our system supports multiple push/pull services simultaneously via a multi-thread technique, and our intuitive user interface facilitates ease of use. Future studies would explore the feasibility of implementing our system in a multi-hop environment or providing a community-wide service.

We believe that existing wire solutions such as HomePNA2.0 using phone lines and HomePlug using power line and wireless solution such as HomeRF are the most promising solutions, because of its cost-effectiveness. However, MAC protocols of these solutions provide only Class of Service(CoS) using priority mechanism like HomePNA and HomePlug or consider only voice among real-time traffics like HomeRF. For these reasons, we perceive the needs of the new MAC protocol which is no new wire solution and provides guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS) for not only voice but also video and audio. In light of this, we present the design and software implementation of a new MAC protocol for Home Networks. Our evaluation results of software implementation verify that proposed MAC protocol can provide low delay, low loss, and low jitter to real-time traffic by reserving bandwidth.

Middleware enables different networking devices and protocols to inter-operate in ubiquitous home network environments. The UPnP(Universal Plug and Play) middleware, which runs on a PC and is based on the IPv4 protocol, has attracted much interest in the field of home network research since it has versatility The UPnP, however, cannot be easily accessed via the public Internet since the UPnP devices that provide services and the Control Points that control the devices are configured with non-routable local private or Auto IP networks. The critical question is how to access UPnP network via the public Internet. The purpose of this paper is to deal with the non-routability problem in local private and Auto IP networks by improving the conventional Control Point used in UPnP middleware-based home networks. For this purpose, this paper proposes an improved Control Point for accessing and controlling the home network from remote sites via the public Internet, by adding a web server to the conventional Control Point. The improved Control Point is implemented in an embedded GNU/Linux system running on an ARM9 platform. Also this paper implements the security of the home network system based on the UPnP (Universal Plug and Play), adding VPN (Virtual Private Network) router that uses the IPsec to the home network system which is consisted of the ARM9 and the Embedded Linux.
