Display Technologies for Immersive Devices and Electronic Skin (디스플레이 현황과 발전방향 -실감 및 스킨 기기로의 확대)

  • Since the introduction of CRT(Cathode Ray Tube) in the 1950s, display technologies have been developed continuously. Flat panel displays such as PDP(Plasma Display Panel) and LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) were commercialized in the late 1990s, and OLED(Organic Light Emitting Diodes) and Micro-LED(Micro-Light Emitting Diodes) are now being developed and are becoming widespread. In the future, we expect to develop ultra-realistic, flexible, embedded sensor displays. Ultra-realistic display can be applied to AR/VR(Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality) devices and spatial light modulators for holography. The sensor-embedded display can be applied to robots; electronic skin; and security devices, including iris recognition sensors, fingerprint recognition sensors, and tactile sensors. AR/VR technology must be developed to meet technical requirements such as viewing angle, resolution, and refresh rate. Holography requires optical modulation technology that can significantly improve resolution, viewing angle, and modulation method to enable wide-view and high-quality hologram stereoscopic images. For electronic skin, stable mass production technology, large-area arrays, and system integration technologies should be developed.

  • The proposed method is based on extracting information from 3-D Fourier spectra calculated from some projection incoherent images. Three colored computer-generated holograms (CGHs) are synthesized from 3-D Fourier spectra. Optically reconstructed full-color images are presented.

Compression Performance Comparison of Fringe Pattern and Phase Data for DHM (DHM을 위한 간섭무늬 압축 방법과 위상 압축 방법의 성능 비교)

  • The fringe pattern obtained through a DHM (Digital Holographic Microscopy) contains the thickness information of the sample. However, there is a disadvantage that the data capacity is large. Therefore, a compression method that can reduce the data size while minimizing damage to the thickness information of the sample contained in the fringe pattern is required. This paper presents the phase compression method and confirmed through experiments that the phase compression method is more efficient that the fringe pattern compression method used in JPEG Pleno Holography. As a result of evaluation using RMSE, BD-Rate and PSNR the phase compression method showed up to 92.39% improvement in performance than the fringe pattern compression method. In addition, experiment were conducted under various conditions to compare and analyze the compression performance for each condition. In the case of the fringe pattern compression method, it includes not only the phase information for calculating the thickness of the sample but also other information, whereas the phase compression method compresses only the phase information after removing unnecessary information from the fringe pattern. It is judged to have high performance.

  • Acoustic holography allows us to predict spatial pressure distribution on any surface of interest from measured hologram. It is noteworthy that the data size is so huge that it takes long time to calculate pressure field. Moreover the reconstructed pressure field is frequently too complicated to get what we want to know. One possible candidate is complex envelope. Complex envelope in time domain is well known and widely used in various engineering field. We have attempted to extend this method to space domain, so that we can have rather simple spatial pressure picture that provides information we need, for example, where sound sources are. First we start with the simplest case. We examine the complex envelope of a plane wave on both space and wave number domain. Then we extend to monopole case. Holographic reconstructed sound field on the monopole is processed according to what we propose. We demonstrate how this method provides better picture for analyzing the sound field.

  • In this study a method is proposed for measuring both the refractive index and the shape of a transparent object. The proposed method combines a digital holographic microscope with a liquid. The holograms of a sample immersed in different liquids are recorded and then the three-dimensional phase information of the sample is reconstructed numerically. In particular, we have proposed a theoretical model for determining both the refractive index and shape of a sample, and micro-corner cubes are examined experimentally.

  • In beamforming method, source positions are predicted by MUSIC (Multiple Signal Classification) power method and composite sound fields can then be decomposed into each partial field by beamforming, detenninistically without restriction of the distance between reference microphones and sources. However, reference microphone array shape is important in both MUSIC and beamforming method. Thus the present paper describes the effect of the reference microphone array shape.

Error Investigation in use of Near-field Acoustic Holography in the Underwater Environment of Reflected Wave (수중반사파 환경에서의 근접음장 홀로그래피 적용에 대한 오차 고찰)

  • Nowadays, it is required for naval ships to estimate 3D underwater radiated noise pattern in all direction at peak frequencies of hull vibration for the reduction of being detected and doing the effective operation. For this purpose, the numerical method has to be developed to calculate 3D underwater radiated noise pattern with experimental data. It is very difficult to obtain the experimental data for the real ship. Alternative to get the experimental results is to use NAH(near-field acoustic holography) in acoustic tank with experimental model. Application of NAH in acoustic tank for the experimental model needs some investigation of reflection wave from the wall of the acoustic tank and unmeasured zone of the experimental model due to the supporting structure for it. In this study, the effect of reflection wave in the acoustic tank and unmeasured area of the experimental model when using the NAH was investigated with experiment and numerical model. From these, it is known for the error due to reflection wave can be reduced when the distance between the measurement plane and source is being shorten. Also, unmeasured area of the experimental model gives rise to some error in the estimation of the far-field acoustic pressure.

  • This paper presents a holography through high scatter mediums. Femtosecond light pulses are used as object light and reference light. When light passes through a high scatter medium, there are ballistic light, snake light and difussive light in transmitting light. However, ballistic and snake light are very weak, difussive light is very stronge so that they can not be imaged directly, By using femtosecond laser electronic holographic gating method to gate ballistic light and snake light and multi-holograms processing technology, high quality images can be obtained.   • In this paper, a new method for efficient computation of CGH patterns for 3-D video images is proposed by combined use of temporal redundancy and look-up table techniques. In the conventional N-LT method, fringe patterns for other object points on that image plane can be obtained by simply shifting these pre-calculated PFP (Principle Fringe Patterns). But there have been many practical limitations in real-time generation of 3-D video holograms because the computation time required for the generation of 3-D video holograms must be massively increased compared to that of the static holograms. On the other hand, as ordinary 3-D moving pictures have numerous similarities between video frames, called by temporal redundancy, and this redundancy is used to compress the video image. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed the efficient hologram generation method using the temporal redundancy of 3-D video image and N-LT method. To confirm the feasibility of the proposed method, some experiments with test 3-D videos are carried out, and the results are comparatively discussed with the conventional methods in terms of the number of object points and computation time.
