Estuary of River Nakdong(in south-eastern coast of Korean Peninsula) is the most representative site of delta in Korea. This study is to elucidate morpho-structural background associated with the embayment area and sedimentation processes, having allowed development of the delta. In this area, Great morphological trait of the embayment area had been formulated by differential erosion exploiting regional fracture system(NNE-SSW, NNW-SSE, E-W,...) of tectonic origin. For this reason, outline of the embayment basin shows quadrangular plan, and ridges and dissected valleys of neighbouring mountains draw frequently morphological lineament pattern. At the last glacial age when delta deposit had not yet filled the actual embayment basin of the Nakdong, mechanical weathering(frost shattering) and mass-movement processes had provided detritus materials composed of blocks, boulders on bottom the basin. With the postglacial transgression in the Holocene, the basin had been submerged, then began to be filled with fluvio-marine deposits from Kimhae-Yangsan area toward actual estuarine zone, so that Nakdong delta have been formed. Analysis and synthesis of from hundreds of boring data of the delta area reveal that progression of delta formation have been accompanied with the development of barrier islands. If the barrier islands had grown as forming a plural row, then their intervals have posteriorly filled with another fluvio-marine deposits. Besides, it shows that delta deposits are essentially alluvial. However, at the periphery of the delta, intervention of fine marine deposits is frequently found.
With regard to the Quaternary formations in the Korean Peninsula, very few studies have been done specially from a stratigraphic viewpoint. The alluvial sediments filling in the valleys have often been considered as the only formation of Quaternary age (more precisely of the Holocone) and so the Pleistocene was regarded as an erosional or nondepositional episode. This is apparently evident from a quick look at the general geological maps of the Peninsula, which show a lithological sequence of Mesozoic or Paleozoic substrata immediately overlain by Holocene alluvium. Likewise, the Pleistocene period was described in terms of unconformity in most local or regional stratigraphical successions of the Peninsula. Recently several different types of Quaternary formation, besides the so-called Holocene alluvium in the valley plain have been found around the Peninsula. They consist of coastal deposits, marine or fluviatile terrace deposits, ancient valley fill deposits or slope deposits. Some parts of the volcanic sediments in Jeju Is. are also known as the Quaternary sequence. Thus the Quaternary deposits in the Peninsula are far more developed than previously known to gelolgists. Moreover the importance of Quaternary research became recently apparent in Korea due to the shortage of raw materials and to the policy of an optimum land-use. Advanced constructions and land reclamation have required more precise engineering parameters of loose materials and an estimation of land stability. This does not imply only the engineering, or the structural properties of the loose material, but at the same time the basic study of the sediments from the stratigraphical and environmental viewpoints has been necessary. In this connection, Quaternary outcrops specially along the coastal fringe of the Peninsula have been mapped, profiled and sampled for sedimentological, clay-mineralogical and palaeomagnetic studies. All these results are compiled for the core of the Quaternary stratigraphy of the Peninsula.
A total of 58 species of radiolarians belonging to 41 genera were identified in 44 samples from core A9-EB2 of the Bransfield Basin in the Antarctic. The radiolarian assemblages from A9-EB2 are generally very low in abundance. The dominant species are Antarctissa denticulata, A. longa, A. strelkovi, Lithomelissa setosa, Lifhomitra lineata, Peridium longispinum and Phormacantha hystrix, constituting 75% of the total assemblage. Genera Challenge개n and Protocystis belonging to family Challeneriidae, found in core A9-EB2 have been recorded in the Quaternary sediments. Therefore, the geologic age of core A9-EB2 in Bransfield Basin is regarded to be Quternary (Pleistocene-Holocene). Typical circumpolar taxa such as Antarctissa strelkovi, A. denticulata, Cycladophora davisiana and Larcopyle buetschlii are representing the influence of waters from Bellingshausen Sea and Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Plectacantha oikiskos and Phomacantha hystrix are considered as a coastal indicator. Also, low amounts of Lithomelissa setosa are related to pelagic condition and entrance of cold waters from the Western Weddell Sea into Bransfield Basin. Therefore, the core sediments in Bransfield Basin were deposited under the coastal condition mainly influenced by the waters from Bellingshausen Sea and Antarctic Circumpolar Current. but also by the water from the Western Weddell Sea of the open-water condition.
Deep-drilled core sampling and high-resolution seismic survey were carried out to identify a Holocene-late Pleistocene boundary in Gyeonggi Bay, western coast of Korea. Analysis of core sections revealed the existence of an oxidized and semi-consolidated sediment layer, Iying immediately below a Holocene horizon (Unit I) and being developed at the top of a late Pleistocene deposit (Unit II). The oxidized sedimentary layer (uppermost part of Unit II) is characterized by semi-consolidated, yellowish sediments showing signs of desiccation and alteration such as high N value, low water content, periglacial cryogenic structure, depletion of smectite, and high geochemical weathering index (Ba/Sr ratio). This feature, together with radiocarbon ages, suggests that the layer has formed as a result of prolonged subaerial exposure of Unit II sediments during the late Wisconsin sea-level lowstand, producing a regional unconformity. Such unconformitic-bounding surface corresponds to a prominent near-surface reflector (R), which is observed in seismic profiles obtained across the drilled-core sections in the study area. Consequently, the buried oxidized-sedimentary layer associated with the seismic reflector possibly plays a key horizon for the understanding of late Quaternary environmental changes as well as evidence of the emergence of the Yellow Sea shelf during the late Wisconsin sea-level lowstand.
The landform of the study area is defined as a small-scale alluvial plain in the valley bottom adjacent to the coast. By the aggradation of alluvial materials, this valley bottom plain was formed in dissected parts of low hills. For the purpose of reconstructing the palaeo climate environment in this study, $\delta^{13}C$ analysis and soil organic carbon analysis are therefore employed. Main results of this study are as follows: Section I: the period of $6,600{\pm}60yr$ B.P.$-5,350{\pm}60yr$B.P. was mostly in warm and humid climate environment. A little changes of the humid environment are detected as subdry (or sub-humid)${\rightarrow}$humid in terms of the dryness and wetness. Section II: the period of $5,350{\pm}60yr$ B.P.-2,200 yr B.P. was in warm and humid climate environment, which is similar to the present. However, The sediments between $4,720{\pm}60yr$ B.P. and $4,210{\pm}50 yr$ B.P. experienced the most humid climate environment of all studied sedimentary layers. After $4,210{\pm}50 yr$ B.P., the environment started to change from the humid to the sub-humid (or sub-dry) climate. Section III: the period of 2,200 yr B.P.$-210{\pm}60 yr$ B.P. was distinguish from previous two sections as the environmental changes to sub-humid (or sub-dry) climate was apparent.
The change of sea-level is a good indicator of the change of climate during the Quaternary period. The sea-levels in the world have been changing very irregularly during that time. The pattern of the Quaternary sea-level change was assumed to be a stochastic fractal in this study. We measured fractal dimensions of the Holocene sea-levels of the Hudson river estuary and the Delaware coast. A box counting method gave almost the same values. i.e., D=1.358 for the Hudson sea-level changes and D+1.346 for the Delaware sea-level changes. the ability of the inverse method of fractal interposea-levels. IFIF reproduction the realistic sea-levels for the both of them. The delaware sea-level data made less statistical errors for the interpolation of IFIF than the Hudson and the Delaware sea-levels. IFIF reproduction the realistic sea-levels for the both of them. The Delaware sea-level data made less statistical errors for the interpolation of IFIF than the Hudson sea-level data. This suggests that the Delaware sea-level data are more reliable than the Hudson sea-level data was calculated from the fractal dimension of the Delaware sea-level data. Fractal interpolation functions (FIF) was used to reconstruct the peleosea-levels of the Korean coasts and the Atlantic Ocean coasts of the United States. The Korean Peleosea-level change generacted by FIF is different from the peleosea-level change of the eastern U.S.. The Korean peleosea-levels are much higher than the eastern U.S. Paleosea-levels, comparing to each other from the present to 8,000 BP.
A Potential acid sulfate soil derived from continental Holocene deposits on the fan-base was found and it was characterized with improvement practices. Artesian wells were scattered in the area, and the imperfectly drained soils were featured by having fine loamy with 7~30% of gravels. The potential acid sulfate soil layers were typified by having darkness in color with around 3.3~3.8% of O.M. and 0.34~0.41% of total sulfur. Soil pH ranged from 3.4 to 3.8 but it was decreased to 1.9~2.5 after oxidation with $H_2O_2$. Ground water sprang out from an artesian well contained a high amount of minerals such as Na, Ca, Mg, K, etc. and about 80ppm of sulfate which seemed to be responsible for pyrite formation. The soil was classified to member of "Fine loamy, mixed, acid, mesic, sulfic Haplaquepts" in taxonomically, and "weak potential acid sulfate soils" in interpretatively. The installation of tile drains with adding fine earth and liming were effective. However, the pH goes down to 4.8 again after 3 years of improvement practices.
AMS radiocarbon dates indicated that Eurimji reservoir, located at Jecheon City, Chungbuk Province, has been formed during the late Holocene Epoch. The sedimentary sequence at bottom reveals histories in hydrology, climate conditions and past vegetation dynamics. Ages controlled sedimentological and palynological analyses on ER 3-1 Core contribute to reconstruct paleoclimate and past hydrological conditions. These analyses suggest that lower interval (307.5m~309.5m elevations) of the ER 3-1 Core was deposited in stable from 1,920 yrBP to 1,420 yrBP, but upper layer sediment above these elevations was composed of reworked sediments during the pre and post 2,000 yrBP. Pollen assemblage indicates that watershed vegetation of the Eurimji reservoir, during the period of 1,920 yrBP~1,420 yrBP, was closely comparable to modern vegetation dominated Pinus and Quercus mixed vegetation. Also, riparian including Alnus, Fraxinus and Salix were inhabited along the banks of stream, and aquatics such as Typha, Nymphaea and Persicaria flourished at shore of the reservoir. According to cultural chronicle, it infers that the Eurimji reservoir was formed from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age or the beginning of ancient society. An integrated data suggested that Quercus-Pinus-Abies mixed forest flourished under cool and dry climate conditions during 3,200 yrBP~200 yrBP.
Multi-proxy analysis was used to produce a high-resolution paleoclimatic record from a thick section of the Holocene alluvial fan deposit in Gatap-ri, Buyeo. According to ${\delta}^{13}C$ analyses, five minor climate fluctuations can be determined. From the stage I to stage VI, climate changes are as follows: cool-dry, warm-humid, cool-dry, warm humid, drier than stage IV, and finally more humid environment than stage V. According to magnetic susceptibility records, four different stages can be identified, among which stage ii shows the highest susceptibility. Stage-i deposit is derived from sediments of back marsh-type wetland. Stage-ii and stage-iii deposits, however, show higher magnetic susceptibility because magnetite-enriched soil from weathered upland was transported to the area to form an alluvial fan deposits. Stage-iv deposit is comparable to the modern plow horizon.
The geochemical properties, sedimentation rates, foraminiferal distributions, and oxygen and carbon isotope records of sediment from Cores S-2 and S-19 were studied to investigate late Holocene paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic changes of the admiralty and Maxwell Bay, King George Island, Antarctica. Total organic carbon contents increased from the lower part to the upper part of Cores S-2 and S-19, whereas calcium carbonate contents decreased from the lower part to the upper part of Cores S-2 and s-19,whereas calcium carbonate contents decreased from the lower part to the upper part of Cores S-2 and S-19. Twenty-seven foraminiferal species were identified, and Globocassidurina biora was mostly a bundant in sediment samples. The sedimentation rates ranged from 24 cm/kyr to 237 cm/kyr based on /SUP 14/C-age dating of G. biora. The sedimentation rates increased rapidly in the upper part of the Cores. б/SUP 18/O values ranged from 0.3% to 6.2% and б/SUP 13/C values ranged from -3.0% to 0.0% with several fluctuations of the values. The lowest part of Core S-2, at 128 cmbsf in depth, had a /SUP 14/C-age of 3,100${\pm}$60 yr B.P. and the lowest part of Core S-19, at 230 cmbsf in depth, of 7,400${\pm}$ yr B.P. The results of geochemical and sedimentological analyses of the core sediments suggested five stages of paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic changes as follows: war,-cold stage of 7,500∼6,500 yr B.P., cold stage of 6,500∼3,600 yr B.P., cold-warm stage of 3,600∼2,770 yr B.P., warm stage of 2,770∼2,380 yr B.P. and cold-warm stage of 2,380∼2,100 yr B.P.
