  • The usage of fiber-reinforced polymer materials increases in the construction sector due to their advantages in terms of high mechanical strength, lightness, corrosion resistance, low density and high strength/density ratio, low maintenance and painting needs, and high workability. In this study, it is aimed to improve mechanical properties of GFRP box profiles, produced by pultrusion method, by filling the polymer concrete into them. Within the scope of study, hybrid use of polymer concrete produced with GFRP box profiles was investigated. Hybrid pressure and bending specimens were produced by filling polymer concrete (polyester resin manufactured with natural sand and stone chips) into GFRP box profiles having different cross-sections and dimensions. Behavior of the produced hybrid members was investigated under bending and compression tests. Hollow GFRPxx profiles, polymer-filled hybrid members, and nominative polymeric concrete specimens were tested as well. The behavior of the specimens under pressure and bending tests, and their load bearing capacities, deformations and changes in toughness were observed. According to the test results; It was deduced that hybrid design has many advantages over its component materials as well as superior physical and mechanical properties.

  • The prism spectrometer is a standard device for the measurement of refractive index; it is used in undergraduate laboratories. Typically, however, lots of attention is required in the alignment, and the accuracy of the obtained refractive index is not so high in spite of the durability of the device. The maximum and minimum deviation method, which compensates the disadvantages of the prism spectrometer, can be composed cost effectively using a length marking tape and a rotating platform. It can measure the refractive indices accurately by utilizing a wide screen. In this study, the equal sided hollow prism whose length is 26 mm was fabricated and measured the refractive indices of seven kind of liquids (pure water, $C_3H_5(OH)_2$, $CCl_4$, $C_6H_4NH_2$, $CS_2$, $C_6H_4(CH_3)_2)$ by using the prism spectrometer and maximum and minimum deviated laser beam method at the wavelengths of He-Ne laser (${\lambda}$= 632.8 nm) and YVO4 laser (${\lambda}$= 532 nm). The result shows that the data obtained by the latter method are more accurate and precise than those obtained by the former device.

  • Au films with a thickness around 1600 $\AA$ were deposited onto glass at room temperature by ion beam sputtering with a 5 cm cold-hollow ion gun at pressure $1\times 10^{-6}-1\times 10^{-5}$ Torr. Irradiation of the Au deposited samples was carried out at pressure of $7\times 10^{-6}$ Torr. For the sputter depositions, $Ar^+$ ion energy was 1 keV, and the current density at the substrate surface was 15 $\mu$A/$\textrm{cm}^2$. Effects of 1 keV $Ar^+$ ion dose($I_d$) between $1\times 10^{16}\; and\;2\times 10^{17}\;Ar^+\textrm{cm}^{-2}$on properties such as crystallinity, surface roughness and adhesion, etc. of the films have been investigated. The Au films sputtered by $Ar^+$ ion beam had only (111) plane and the X-ray intensity of the films decreased with increase of $I_d$. The thickness of Au films reduced with Id. $R_{ms}$ surface roughness of the films increased from 16 $\AA$ at as-deposited to 1118 $\AA$ at ion dose= $2\times 10^{17}\;Ar^+\textrm{cm}^{-2}$. Adhesion of Au film on sputtered at $I_d$= $2\times 10^{17}\;Ar^+\textrm{cm}^{-2}$ was 9 times greater than that of Au film with untreated, as determined by a scratch test.

  • Recently, a concern about hollow core precast concrete (PC) slab has been increased as a method to improve the construction ability by reducing the self weight of structures during the construction. Hollow core slab which is known as a typical PC slab in domestic construction of PC building has a problem to put shear reinforcements in the web of element during the production of element in the factory. With regard to this point, recently, tripple ribs slab (TRS) which can be said as a new type of half PC slab system was developed. In TRS, it is possible to place shear reinforcements in PC element during the production of the element in the factory. This paper presents the shear test result of TRS which was done by one point loading test under simple support condition. Test parameters are the presence of cast-in-place (CIP) concrete and the contribution of lattice bars. From the test, it was found that the TRS has sufficient shear capacity to resist the design load and its strength can be predicted by the code equations for general beam. It is recommended to ignore the strength of lattice bar in the calculation of shear strength during the construction since its contribution is too low to be considered when CIP is not casted.

  • The flexural behaviour of steel beams significantly affects the structural performance of the steel frame structures. In particular, the flexural overstrength (namely the ratio between the maximum bending moment and the plastic bending strength) that steel beams may experience is the key parameter affecting the seismic design of non-dissipative members in moment resisting frames. The aim of this study is to present a new formulation of flexural overstrength factor for steel beams by means of artificial neural network (NN). To achieve this purpose, a total of 141 experimental data samples from available literature have been collected in order to cover different cross-sectional typologies, namely I-H sections, rectangular and square hollow sections (RHS-SHS). Thus, two different data sets for I-H and RHS-SHS steel beams were formed. Nine critical prediction parameters were selected for the former while eight parameters were considered for the latter. These input variables used for the development of the prediction models are representative of the geometric properties of the sections, the mechanical properties of the material and the shear length of the steel beams. The prediction performance of the proposed NN model was also compared with the results obtained using an existing formulation derived from the gene expression modeling. The analysis of the results indicated that the proposed formulation provided a more reliable and accurate prediction capability of beam overstrength.

  • An intensity-based optical fiber vibration sensor is applied to monitor the structural vibration and detect impact locations on a plate. Optical fiber vibration sensor is constructed by placing two cleaved fiber end, one of which is cantilevered in a hollow glass tube. The movement of the cantilevered section lags behind the rest of the sensor in response to an applied vibration and the amount of light coupled between the two fibers is thereby modulated. For vibration sensing, optical fiber vibration sensor is mounted on the carbon fiber composite beam and its response is investigated to free and forced vibration. In impact location detection, four optical fiber vibration sensors whose location is predetermined are placed at chosen positions and the different arrival times of impact-generated vibration signal are recorded by an FFT analyzer. Impact location can be calculated from these time delays. Experimental results show that optical fiber vibration sensor signals coincide with gap sensor in vibration sensing. The precise location of impact can be detected on an acrylate plate.

  • PURPOSES : The impact performance of flexible barrier system such as structural response, vehicular motion and occupant safety vary depending on the impact point. Thus, to properly evaluate the performance of a flexible barrier system, impact should be made to a point which will lead to the worst possible results. This point is called the Critical Impact Point (CIP). This paper presents the way to determine the CIP for a SB2 class flexible barrier system which is consisted of Thrie-Beam rail and circular hollow tube post of 2m span. METHODS: Barrier VII simulations were made for impact points; Case 1 at a post, Case 2 at 1/3 span downstream from a post, Case 3 at middle of the span, Case 4 at 2/3 span downstream from a post. For the structural performance (deflections), impact simulation of 8000kg-65km/h-15degree was used, and for vehicle motion and occupant safety, simulation of 1300kg-80km/h-20degree impact was made and analysed. RESULTS: Case 1 gave the largest dynamic deflection of 75.72cm and also gave the largest snag value of 44.3cm. Occupant safety and exit angle of the vehicle after the impact were not sensitive to the impact point and were all below the allowable limit. CONCLUSIONS : For the SB2 class flexible barrier system's CIP can be regarded as a post which is sufficiently away from the end of Length of Need in order to avoid the end-effect of the barrier system. It can be more economic in the long run because the normal concrete pavement material is likely to cost more due to higher probability of maintenance and repair and higher social cost due to traffic accident, etc.

  • Two data sets of repeated hydrographic surveys with a single beam echo-sounder were obtained to investigate morphological changes on a sand mining site within EEZ near the Eocheong Islands, West Sea of Korea. Their accuracies of depth measurement, estimated from the crossover analysis, correspond to the Oder 2 of IHO standards. Bathymetric maps show a feature of 300m wide and 10m deep hollow, whose evolution can be seen in difference grids of the two bathymetric maps. However, data of higher accuracy and resolution enable precise quantification of extracted sand volume. Since this morphological change could affect sedimentary environment as well as benthic ecology, environmental impact assessment based on scientific research data is required for management and sustainable development of limited sand resource.

  • The ship sailing among waves are suffered the various wave loads that comes from its motion throughout its life. Because there are dynamic, the analysis of ship structure must be considered as the dynamic problem precisely. In the rationally-based design, the dynamic structural analysis is carried out using dynamic wave loads provided from the results of the ship mouton calculation as the rigid body. This method is based on the linear theory assumed low wave height and small amplitude of motion. But at the rough sea condition, high wave height, relatively ship's depth, is induced the large ship motion, so the ship section configulation below water line is rapidly changed at each time. This results in non-linear problem. Considering above situation in this paper, the strength analysis method is introduced for the hull glider among waves considering non-linear hydrodynamic forces. This paper considers that the overall or primary level of the ship structural dynamic loading and dynamic response provided from the non-linear wave forces, and bottom and bow flare impact forces estimated by momentum slamming theory, in which the ship is idealized as a hollow thin-walled box beam using thin-walled beam theory and the finite element method. This method is applied to 40,000 Ton Double-Skin Tanker and attention is paid to the influence of the response of ship speed, wave length and wave height compared with linear strip theory.

  • In this study, a structural concrete square beam was developed using the centrifugal molding technique. In order to secure the bending stiffness of the cross section, the hollow rate of the cross section was set to 10% or less. Instead of using the current poor mixture of concrete and a concrete mixing ratio with a high slump (150-200) and a design strength of 100 MPa or more was developed and applied. In order to investigate the durability of centrifugally formed PSC square beams to be used as the superstructure of the avalanch tunnel or ramen bridge, the durability performance of ultra-high-strength centrifugally formed concrete with a compressive strength of 100 MPa was evaluated in terms of deterioration and chemical resistance properties.Concrete durability tests, including chloride penetration resistance, accelerated carbonation, sulfate erosion resistance, freeze-thaw resistance, and scaling resistance, were performed on centrifugally formed square beam test specimens produced in 2022 and 2023. Considering the information verified in this study, the durability of centrifugally molded concrete, which has increased watertightness in the later manufacturing stage, was found to be superior to that of general concrete.
