The effects of Cu on feeding and macro-porosity characteristics were investigated in hypo- (A356 and 319) and hypereutectic (391) aluminum-silicon alloys. T-section and Tatur tests showed that the feeding and macro-porosity characteristics were significantly different between the hypo- and hypereutectic alloys. The hole and the pipe in the T-section and the Tatur casting in hypereutectic alloy showed a rough and irregular shape due to the faceted growth of the primary silicon, while the results of the hypoeutectic alloys exhibited a rather smooth surface. However, the addition of Cu did not strongly affect the macro-feeding behavior. It is known that copper segregates and interferes the feeding process in the last stage of solidification, possibly leading to form more amount of micro shrinkage porosity by the addition of Cu. The macro porosity formation mechanism and feeding properties were discussed upon T-section and Tatur tests together with an alloying addition.

Recently, the formation of the complexes between macrocyclic polyethers and alkali metal salts have been determined by several methods. It has been suggested that the specificity of the complexation be due to the nature of the surrounding solvent molecules. The formation constant values ($K_f$) of $K^+$ are shown to be the largest among the other alkali metal cations because the ionic diameter of $K^+$ is approximately the same with the hole size of 18-crown-6. In this study the formation constants of the 1 : 1 complexes of 18-crown-6 with potassium p-substituted phenoxide are calculated by the conductance measurement in organic solvents. As a result, the $K_f$ value series among organic solvents are given in the order of $CH_3$OH > DMF > DMSO. It seems that the donor number of the solvent is a main factor in the formation of the complex between $K^+$ metal ion and 18-crown-6 molecules. At the same time, the formation constants increase with increasing the electron-withdrawing power of substituents because the phenoxide ion is stabilized by the charge dispersion.
We investigate the dependence of star formation rate and Active Galaxy Nuclei (AGN) frequency on the bar properties, especially the bar strength, using SDSS DR6. To better represent the bar strength, we divided the bars into 6 classes according to their length and axial ratios. There seems to be a fairly good correlation between the star formation rate derived from $H{\alpha}$ emission lines and the bar strength, whereas there is no apparent correlation between the AGN activity and the bar strength. We interpret that the former correlation is due to the dependence of bar-driven gas inflow on the strength of bar. The lack of correlation between AGN and bar properties suggests that the accretion of gas onto a supermassive black hole (SMBH) is regulated by the interplay between the bar and SMBH. The frequency of AGN seems to be dependent on the background density but the star formation rate does not. It suggests that star formation is a localized phenomenon that is mostly determined by the gas density in a galaxy, while AGN activity is more closely related to the host property such as mass and luminosity that are thought to be dependent on the environment through the density-luminosity relation.
A TBM launching shaft in DTL2 Contract 915 site is located in a typical hard Bukit Timah granite formation and lots of blasting work is required for shaft sinking. The original blast design used the electric detonator and ANFO blasts consisting of 30 holes per one blast with 1.5 m depth of drilling hole. However, significant delay of work and poor progress were expected due to the limitation of the number of blasting hole and strict vibration regulation on retaining systems. To overcome such constraints, an efficient new blasting method which can improve productivity and satisfy vibration limit was required. The revised blast design, using triple-deck blasts with electronic detonators and cartridge emulsion explosives, gives better construction performance and can reduce construction time. Such a new blasting technique can be effectively used for similar underground projects in the future where the volume of rock blasting is significant.
We have discovered an unexplored population of galaxies featuring weak broad-line regions (BLRs) at z < 0.2 from detailed analysis of galaxy spectra in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. These objects predominantly show a stellar continuum but also a broad $H{\alpha}$ emission line, indicating the presence of a low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN) oriented so that we are viewing the central engine directly without significant obscuration. These accreting black holes have previously eluded detection due to their weak nature. The new BLR AGNs we found increased the number of known type 1 AGNs by 49%. Some of these new BLR AGNs were detected at the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and their X-ray properties confirm that they are indeed type 1 AGN. Based on our new and more complete catalogue of type 1 AGNs, we derived the type 1 fraction of AGNs as a function of [OIII] ${\lambda}5007$ emission luminosity and explored the possible dilution effect on the obscured AGN due to star-formation. The new type 1 AGN fraction shows much more complex behavior with respect to black hole mass and bolometric luminosity than suggested by the existing receding torus model. The type 1 AGN fraction is sensitive to both of these factors, and there seems to be a sweet spot (ridge) in the diagram of black hole mass and bolometric luminosity. Furthermore, we present a hint that the Eddington ratio plays a role in determining the opening angles. This work is submitted to ApJS.

In this study hydraulic experiment was carried out to investigate the flow characteristics in the submerged outlet structure of Boryeong power plant and the efficiency of bubble reduction by installing horizontal porous plate in the outlet structure. The cross-sectional mean velocity in the submerged outlet structure was smaller than 1 m/s, the target value at the design stage to prevent bubble outflow to the open sea area. In addition, it was found that the maximum depth of bubble penetration is reduced 30 to 50% by installing the horizontal porous plate at the second falling location in the submerged outlet structure. It is expected that the total bubble amount entrained in the water will be most efficiently reduced by installing square-hole-shape porous plate of 20 cm hole size and making its central section as non-porous structure to dissipate the energy of falling water.
Multi-hole type oxygen combustion burner was developed for industrial gasification and smelting furnace. We investigated characteristics of flame, radiation transfer, and soot emission in the convectional oxygen burner with respect to the feeding condition of fuel and oxygen. Regarding the results of the conventional burner, we designed new burners which have larger fuel consumption rate and radiation heat transfer. We changed the size and hole number and shape of the exit plane of the burner. In addition, the performance of the burner was tested with respect to the feeding condition of the fuel and air: Normal Diffusion flame(NDF) and Inverse Diffusion Flame(IDF). We investigated the flame configuration, radiation heat transfer, and soot formation by using a CCD camera, heat flux meter, and Laser Induced Incadescence(LII), respectively. The stable operating condition was obtained by the flame configuration and the flame of the burner which has dented exit plane was more stable in whole operating conditions. The characteristics of radiative heat transfer were sensitive to the feeding condition of reactants and the flame of 75% primary oxygen and 25% secondary oxygen of the IDF case shows maximum radiation heat transfer. The soot volume fraction of the flame was measured in the axial direction of the flame and the amount of soot volume fraction is proportion to the radiation heat transfer. As a result, we can get the optimal operating condition of the newly designed burner which enhances the characteristics of flame stabilization and radiation heat transfer.
In this study, the intermediate layer in Pd-based hydrogen separation membrane was synthesized to minimize the surface roughness and defects using powder-type and sol-type metal oxides. The surface properties and gas permeation characteristics were analysed by SEM and $N_2$ gas permeation test. The coating layer composed of sol type metal oxides has smooth surface, especially the layer coated by $TiO_2$ sol has little pin holes, cracks and defects. The binary layer composed of powder type and sol type metal oxides has similar flux characteristics to a single sol type layer. The Pd-based composite membrane improved by the binary intermediate layer exhibited $0.32mol/m^2s$ of the hydrogen permeation flux with a selectivity ($H_2/N_2$) of ~10,890 at 672 K and a pressure difference of 1 bar.
One of the most common problems of implant prosthesis is the screw loosening of abutment screws. This brings on discomfort in mastication, inflammation in the peri-implant tissue due to poor oral hygiene and fracture of prosthesis or loss of osseointegration. To prevent screw loosening, appropriate implantation to direct the occlusal force to the long axis of the implant, accurate design of the superstructure, decrease of the occlusal table, and adequate torque on the abutment screw are necessary. In this study the screw loosening torque was evaluated in implants with dimples or flutes in the internal surface of abutment screw holes. The abutments were fastened with slot type and hexagonal type abutment screws and were sealed with vinyl poly siloxane impression and bite registration material respectively. The screw loosening torque was evaluated after 1,800 and 12,600 times loading under a loading machine. The results were as follows. 1. The flute form group showed significantly higher loosening torque compared to the dimple form group and the group with no inner surface treatment (p<0.05). 2. There was no statistical difference in loosening torque according to the sealing materials. 3. The loosening torque according to the types of abutment screw showed no significant difference. 4. The loosening torque was significantly higher after 1800 times loading compared to 12600 times loading(p<0.05). From the above results. it is thought that formation of a flute in the internal surface of the screw hole decreases the chance of screw loosening, but the sealing materials and types of abutment screw did not show significant difference in prevention of screw loosening.
We investigate the solar cycle variation of microwave and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) intensity in latitude to compare microwave polar brightening (MPB) with the EUV polar coronal hole (CH). For this study, we used the full-sun images observed in 17 GHz of the Nobeyama Radioheliograph from 1992 July to 2016 November and in two EUV channels of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) $193{\AA}$ and $171{\AA}$ on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) from 2011 January to 2016 November. As a result, we found that the polar intensity in EUV is anti-correlated with the polar intensity in microwave. Since the depression of EUV intensity in the pole is mostly owing to the CH appearance and continuation there, the anti-correlation in the intensity implies the intimate association between the polar CH and the MPB. Considering the report of Gopalswamy et al. (1999) that the enhanced microwave brightness in the CH is seen above the enhanced photospheric magnetic field, we suggest that the pole area during the solar minimum has a stronger magnetic field than the quiet sun level and such a strong field in the pole results in the formation of the polar CH. The emission mechanism of the MPB and the physical link with the polar CH are not still fully understood. It is necessary to investigate the MPB using high resolution microwave imaging data, which can be obtained by the high performance large-array radio observatories such as the ALMA project.
