"HanGaekChiHeom" is a book that arranged the medical records left by a Japanese doctor Junso Higuchi who treated a group of diplomats from Chosun and questions and answers exchanged between him and Chosun's doctor ChoSoongSoo. There are 14 kinds of medical records here with treatments and prescriptions as well as the detailed descriptions about the name, age and symptoms of patients. Various diseases and symptoms are included among them such as bums, common cold, skin diseases, edemas, etc. The characteristics of Junso Higuchi seem to be affected by medicine in Ming Dynasty in China.
"Uirimchwaryo(醫林撮要)" is a medical book that takes a model of written in the middle of Chosun dynasty. In the contents side, it seems to unite a korea medicine with the Geum-Won Dynasty(金元時代) in ancient china. we can think much of the value that it combines theory with experience, choosing the merits of "Uibangyuchwi(醫方類聚)" which were the masterpieces of the first half of Chosun Dynasty and it increased a practical use to choose easily prescription in the clinic. This book which was proofread and published by imperial physician Yang Yaesoo(楊禮壽, ? ~ 1597) is not exist. In this condition, existing print type is added by scholars only after "Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑)" was compiled. When the academic conference was held in last year, I introduced a new founded book in japan's possession that printed in Chosun dynasty. Moreover I survey more documents and investigate a few old printed books that are handed down to Chosun and Japan. In addition, I will present that had done interchanges between the ancient nations in par-eastern asia, especially to have done by diplomatic mission. We can evaluate the value and effect of "Uirimchwaryo" in Chosun dynasty of medical history.
Through researching 鄕藥救急方, the oldest medical text published in Korea in existence known to date, a study from a Traditional Korean Medicine perspective was conducted. This study aims to observe the treatment of oral, glottal, labial, and dental diseases starting from 統一新羅時代 to the Koryo dynasty from a historical perspective and also find out what clinical significance it withholds. "鄕藥救急方" proposes methods of nurturing the teeth and in doing so displays the tendency of Traditional Korean Medicine of putting much weight on preventing diseases and nurturing the body. "鄕藥救急方" considers the oral, glottal, labial, and dental diseases as not only fundamental problems in itself but also treats them from a perspective that they are results of disharmony among the five viscera and the six bowels. The treatment methods mentioned in "鄕藥救急方" are directly cited in "鄕藥集成方" of early Chosun dynasty. In "東醫寶鑑" of mid-Chosun dynasty, however, changes and modificatios are made to the prescriptions.
In this paper, the overall contents of InJo's disease centering on the records from Chosun Dynasty's Official Records were examined. As a result, it was elucidated that the fundamental cause had lied in internal injuries of the Spleen and Stomach. The reason behind the constant change from fever to chills that agonized InJo the most lied not so much in external hazards as much in the injuries of the Spleen and Stomach. The treatment for InJo focused more on acupuncture methods than herbal medicine, which is thought to be characteristic of mid-Chosun Dynasty starting from the times of prior king SunJo or GwangHaeGun.
We have summarized a large part of the history of Korean medicine from a macroscopic perspective. However, many aspects still remain incomplete from a microscopic perspective. This is partly because the society under the Chosun dynasty was dominated by the gentry class and they were not active in the field of medicine. However, another reason is that, unlike the Chinese, these people left behind few medical case records (醫案, eui-an) that vividly describe the treatment methods prevalent during those times. This may be attributed to the fact that during those times, the focus of medical doctors was not on recording their knowledge and experiences, but on simplification of diagnosis and treatments for practical use. However, since medical case records of any era provide an insight into the state of medical provision at that time, they could play an important role in providing concrete knowledge regarding the state of medicine under the Chosun dynasty, and in understanding the uniqueness of Korean medicine in detail. Therefore, in this article we discuss the recently discovered Gyeongheombang (經驗方), which is archived at the Korea University, and through this we aim to add a new source of detailed information on Korean medicine, and to identify the potential of Korean medicine by demonstrating its uniqueness.
The Sa-am acupuncture is the acupuncture method created during Chosun Dynasty. It is a unique acupuncture method that was created solely in Korea. Its theories are based on the 69th article of "Classic of Difficult Issues", or Nanjing (難經), which says "tonify its mother when deficiency occurs, and purgate its son when excess occurs" (虛則補其母, 實則瀉其子); the concept of "controlling the viscera which restrains the target" "抑其官" was added to this theory to form the principle of Sa-am acupuncture. It is significant that it turns to the basic principles of the Five Viscera and Six Bowels rather than the 體針 or 阿是針 of the existing acupuncure. Sa-am acupuncture was established in the middle of Chosun Dynasty and was popularized to the practitioners of Korean Medicine through transcripts and printed books. The medical books of at the time of Japanese imperialism that introduced Sa-am acupuncture are "經絡學總論", "舍岩鍼灸訣", "經濟要訣", "靑囊訣", "察病要訣", "濟世寶鑑", "經驗寢具編", and "舍岩 靑囊訣". The magazine that mentions the Sa-am acupuncture is "韓方醫藥". The books on Traditional Medicine that is related to Sa-am acupuncture were of great help in reconstruction of Sa-am acupuncture after the liberation of Korea and explaining the principle of Sa-am acupunture in various angles.
This paper seeks to contemplate the background of the advent of acupuncture specialists and the social status of doctors including acupuncture specialists, by examining their activities of in the times of SunJo, GwangHaeGun, and InJo through the chronicles of Chosun Dynasty's Official Records. In addition, the meaning of Lee Hyung Ik's BunChimSool, which was even referred to as 'peculiar', and what diseases were meant to be cured by it were looked into.
This paper treats with transitional development of medico-hygienical situation in district Yanbian along with the evolution in specific field of medicine. This work is particularly important in shaping TKM identity as TCM embraces Chao medicine asserting it as one included in TCM. This research deals with themes of migration of Chao minorities to this territory and their medico-hygienical situation. Lifted bans on immigration in late Qing dynasty with uncertainty of Korea(Chosun) triggered the immigration to this district. The flow was heavily strengthened under the influence of Westerners and Japanese imperialism into china which consequently provoked the ruin of Qing dynasty, the civil war between republicans and communist and the socio-political changes in Korea. As population growths, the establishment of hospitals and immigration of healthcare professionals were also increased. Though this district is located in Chinese mainland the influence of Japanese was also relevant which lead to medical practice reflecting both sides. Mutual combination and influence of western(contemporary) medicine, TCM and TKM practices made the particularity of Chao medicine.
Bodongbiyo is an old medical book, which can be traced by its texts quoted in the pediatric part of Euibangryuchui. A notable fact is that its record does not remain in China, and relevant records are found only in Korea. The book is believed to have been widely used until the early Chosun Dynasty. The present study purposed to examine how records on Bodongbiyo have been handed down until today and to answer questions on the author of the book through investigating the quoted texts. In addition, we tried to get a glimpse of early pediatrics remaining in the book. From this study were drawn conclusions as follows. A. The oldest record about Bodongbiyo is found in the history of King Taejong in Joseonwangjosilrok, and its contents remain in the form of quotations in Hyangyakjipseongbang and Euibangryuchui. The fact that there are several records on Bodongbiyo, which cannot be traced in Chinese literature, means that the categories of medicine were so extensive in those days. Moreover, this proves the existence of pediatrics as a special medical area in the early Chosun Dynasty. B. Bodongbiyo is known to have been written by Yoo Wan-so, but there are some questions and, in fact, its contents including the theory of fever are contradictory to Yoo Wan-so's medical theory. A number of books that have been published recently in China under the title Bodongbiyo contain the original commentaries of Euibangryuchui and the contents of Yoo Wan-so's other books. They are likely to throw confusion into future researches. C. Bodongbiyo is believed to have been read widely in the Koryo Dynasty and the early Chosun Dynasty. Through examining its texts, we found that the book takes a different course from Soayakjeungjikgyeol. This provides a lead to the understanding of pediatrics in the early Chosun as well as to further research on pediatrics in the mid Chosun Dynasty represented by Dongeuibogam.
Objectives : The objective of this article is to compare acupuncture treatment of stroke in the medical documents of the Chosun-Korea dynasty. Through such inquisition, the development process of acupuncture of stroke treatment could be found. Methods : We used Cross-comparison analysis of the contents of five medical books, HyangYakZipSungBang (HYZSB), UiRimChwarYo(URCY), DongEuiBoGam(DEBG), ChimGuGyungHumBang(CGGHB) and Saam-Acupuncture(SA) of the Chosun-Korea dynasty. Results & Conclusion : 1. Distinction between Stroke of Viscera and Stroke of Bowel was important. Firts two books divided stroke into three type. But last three books separated into Stroke of Viscera and Stroke of Bowel. 2. They emphasized Symptoms of Five Visceral Disease. They devised Symptoms of Five Visceral Disease for Stroke of Viscera treatment. This method appears very rarely in clinical medicine. 3. They used common important acupoint for treatment of stroke. Most of these acupoints exist at the limbs. 4. They chose acupoints on the opposite side against the symptom.
