The phenolic acids in needles of five pine species such as Pinus densiflora, P. thunbergii. P. virginiana. P. rigida. and P. koraiensis were analyzed seasionally (March, June, September and December) in order to investigate the resistant factors against pine gall-midge(Thecodiplosis japonensis Uchida et Inouye). The interrelation of resistance to pine gall-midge and the content of phenolic acids in pine needles was investigated in the artificial hybride pine species. The contents of salicylic acid in susceptible species (P. densiflora and P. thunbergii) to pine gall-midge which watered with salicylic acid solution in a pot was determined. The results can be concluded as follows, 1. There was a little change in total phenolic constituents of resistant and susceptible pines seasonally. The each content of benzoic acid, salicylic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid in June was the highest through four seasons. 2. In June, resistant species showed higher content of salicylic acid than susceptible species, while the content of gallic acid was the highest in December. 3. Among the 21 artificial hybrids(P. densiflora ${\times}$ P. virginiana. P. thunbergii ${\times}$ P. virginiana), the hybrides of the higher salicylic acid content showed the lower rate of pine gall formation. 4. Pine gall formation of the susceptible species which were watered with salicylic acid solution remarkably decreased.

Diffusion and accumulation of ethoprophos in fruit such as apple and two types of pears were examined by dipping them into the solution of ethoprophos. The effective diffusivities of ethoprophos at the skin and flesh of apple and pear were determined by simulation their experimental accumulation curves with calculated ones from the model assuming consecutive diffusion of ethoprophos from skin to flesh. Its effective diffusivity at the flesh with higher content of water were higher, $\sim10^{-10}\;m^2/s$, regardless of the types of fruits, while that at the skin was small, $\sim10^{-12}\;m^2/s$ and increased with the order of 'Niitaka' pear < 'Whangkeumbae' pear < 'Fuji' apple. The variation in the concentration of ethoprophos in its solution did not induce any change in affecting its effective diffusivity at the flesh of 'Whangkeumbae' pear, but the increase in the concentration caused the increase in its effective diffusivity at the skin. The penetration rate of ethoprophos at the skin was an important factor in determining its accumulation rate in fruit.

The effects of chemical species in groundwater on the solubility of the uranyl hydrolysis precipitates formed at pH 6.4 and 9.7 were investigated. Based on the chemical composition of the groundwater, the synthetic groundwater was prepared. The colloid-free (separated) groundwater was also prepared by removal of both organic and inorganic colloids from the sampled groundwater. Solubilities of precipitates formed in the hydrolysis of uranyl ion in groundwater, separated groundwater, synthetic groundwater and 0.1 M NaCl solution were measured over neutral to alkaline pH range, and especially, the effect of the anions and cations found in groundwater on the solubility was investigated. Solubility in groundwater was approximately two orders of magnitude greater than that in 0.1 M NaCl solution. Soubililties of uranyl hydrolysis precipitates formed at pH 9.7 and 6.4 were compared in groundwater and synthetic groundwater. Solubilities of the precipitates formed at different pH were found to be in the same order of magnitude in groundwater and synthetic groundwater, however the uranyl hydolysis precipitates formed at higher pH values showed a tendency of higher solubility.
Heavy metals are extracted from Chonju stream sediment, roadside soils and sediments along Honam expressway, soils and tailings from mining area using three different methods (partial extraction in Standard Method, partial extraction method with maintaining 0.1 N of extraction solution and Sequential Extraction Method). In samples having buffer capacity against acid, pH 1 (0.1 N HCl) of extraction solution can not be maintained and pH of extraction solution increases up to 8.0 when partial extraction in Standard Method is used. The averages and ranges of HPE(heavy metals extracted using partial extraction in Standard Method)/HPEM(heavy metals extracted using partial extraction method with maintaining 0.1 N of extraction solution) values are 0.479 and 0.145~0.929 for Cd, 0.534 and 0.078~0.928 for Zn, 0.432 and 0.041~0.992 for Mn, 0.359 and 0.011~0.874 for Cu, 0.150 and 0.018~0.530 for Cr, 0.219 and 0.003~0.853 for Pb, and 0.088 and 1.73${\times}$10$^{-5}$~0.303 for Fe. These data indicate that the difference between HPE and HPEM is large in the order of Fe, Cr, Pb, Cu, Mn, Cd and Zn. The amounts of heavy metals extracted decreases in the follow order; Sum III(sum of fraction I, II, III in sequential extraction)>HPEM>Sum III (sum of fraction I and II)>HPE for Zn, Cd and Mn and Sum III>HPEM>HPE for Cr and Fe. In the case Cr, Sum II is lower than HPEM and higher than HPE. In case of Cu, extracted heavy metals is large in the order Sum IV>HPEM>Sum III HPE. HPE/HPEM value decreases with increasing the amount of HCl used for maintaining 0.1 N of extraction solution. For samples with high buffer capacity, HPE/HPEM value in all elements is lower than 0.2. On the other hand, for samples with low buffer capacity, HPE/HPEM value are over 0.2 and many samples have values higher than 0.6 for Zn, Cd Mn and Cu due to the small difference between Sum II and Sum III, and relatively higher mobility. However, for Fe and Cr, HPE/HPEM value is below 0.2 even for samples with low buffer capacity due to their low mobility and big difference between Sum II and Sum III. This study indicates that the partial extraction method in Korean Standard Method of soil is not suitable for an assessment of soil contamination in area where buffer capacity of soil can be decreased or lost because of a long term exposure to environmental damage such as acidic rain.

Exter ballistics of a typical high-speed projectile is studied through a flow-visualization experiment and an unstructured grid Navier-Srokes computation. Experiment produced a schlieren photograph that adequately shows the characteristic features of this complex flow, namely two kinds of oblique cone shocks and turbulent wake developing into the downstream. A hybrid scheme of finite volume-element method is used to simulate the compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stok- es solution on unstructured grids. Osher's approximate Riemann solver is used to discretize the cinvection term. Higher-order spatial accuracy is obtained by MUSCL extension and van Albada ty- pe flux limiter is used to stabilize the numerical oscillation near the solution discontinuity. Accurate Gakerkin method is used to discretize the viscous term. Explict fourth-order Runge-Kutta method is used for the time-stepping, which simplifies the application of MUSCL extension. A two-layer k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model is used to simulate the turbulent wakes accurately. Axisymmetric folw and two-dimensional flow with an angle of attack have been computed. Grid-dependency is also checked by carrying out the computation with doubled meshes. 2-D calculation shows that effect of angle of attack on the flow field is negligible. Axi-symmetric results of the computation agrees well with the flow visualization. Primary oblique shock is represented within 2-3 meshes in numerical results, and the varicose mode of the vortex shedding is clearly captured in the turbulent wake region.

A series of experiments with a laboratory scale ultrasound treatment system for MTBE polluted groundwater was performed to increase the efficiency of MTBE degradation in groundwater. This study evaluated several factors to increase the efficiency of MTBE treatment for artificial and natural groundwater. The treated volume of groundwater, ultrasound frequency and power, and pollutant concentrations have been changed to evaluate its effects on the degradation efficiency of MTBE in batch and continuous flow reactor. For the specific experimental conditions on this paper, MTBE degradations are more efficient at 580 kHz than those at 1 MHz. The efficiency of MTBE degradation is proportional to the intensity of ultrasound power per unit volume of MTBE polluted groundwater. The concentration of ions in groundwater does not much affect the efficiency of MTBE degradation. The $1^{st}$ order degradation constant of MTBE for different power per unit volume at 580 kHz shows linear relationship at same concentration. The $1^{st}$ order degradation constant for 0.1 mM MTBE solution is higher than that for 1 mM MTBE solution. These experimental results could be helpful to seek optimal conditions for relatively large volume of polluted groundwater treatment.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the degree of marginal leakage that is made by wet bonding to dentin and dissolution of dentinal collagen layer in vivo and in vitro. Class V cavities were prepared to 32 cat's canine teeth and they were randomly assigned into the following 4 groups : Group 1 (not acid conditioned) ; Group 2 (acid-conditioned and blot-dried) ; Group 3 (acid-conditioned and air-dried for 30 seconds) ; Group 4 (acid-conditioned and retreated with 10% NaOCl solution). The acetone-based primer and bonding agent of All Bond 2(Bisco Inc., U.S.A.) and composite resin(Z-100, 3M. Dent. Prod., U.S.A.) were then applied. The resin collar and cap attached to each specimen and 50% silver nitrate solution was placed inside the resin cap for 3 hours. After the canine tooth was resected in level of cervical third, specimens were highly polished and observed the degree of the dye penetration on incisal and gingival margins. The results were as follows ; 1. There was no significant difference of marginal leakage in all the groups between in vivo and in vitro. 2. In vivo, the degree of leakage on the gingival margin showed the lowerest in group 4 and followed by group 2, 3 and group 1 with ascending order. However, there was no statistical difference among all the groups(p>0.05). 3. In vitro, the degree of leakage on the gingival margin showed the lowerest in group 2 and followed by group 4, 3 and group 1 with ascending order. However, there was no significant difference among the experimental groups(p>0.05). 4. The marginal leakage of the incisal margin in vitro was significantly higher in group 1 than the remaining groups(p<0.05).
The aim of this study was to investigate the removal efficiency of $17{\alpha}$-methyltestosterone (MT) from aqueous solution by Salvinia cucullata Roxb. ex Bory in an active plant-based reactor with a specific focus on linear regression analysis for the sorption phenomena of MT onto the plant roots. A high performance liquid chromatographic method using UV detection (245 nm) was used to analyse the samples. The batch experiments of the active plant reactor (APR) were established to investigate the ability of Salvinia cucullata to remove MT from the liquid phase. The results revealed that 40% and 60% removal of MT from the liquid phase was observed at 5 min. and at 4 h, respectively. Salvinia cucullata can effectively remove MT from the aqueous solution in APRs. Kinetic studies revealed that the sorption phenomena of MT by Salvinia is best described using a linearized pseudo - second order model. Based on the kinetic parameters, it is likely that during the first 4 h of the contact (t = 0 to t = 4 h) sorption is the major driving mechanism of the disappearance of MT from aqueous solutions. However, at higher MT concentrations, diffusivity of MT has a significant effect on the migration of MT from the bulk stream to the root surface. The isotherm analysis revealed that the sorption kinetics favourably followed pseudo second-order. The results of isotherm analysis have indicated that the sorption of MT onto the root surfaces of Salvinia cucullata was favourable and almost irreversible.
It is sometimes said lately that the pH of the human gastric juice is significantly different among individuals. Thus, the dissolution behavior of coated solid dosage forms should preferably be independent of the pH of the test solution. With these points as a background, the effect of pH on the dissolution velocity of coated tablets was studied to compare that of Pharmacoat with other gastric soluble film coating materials. Three viscosity types of Pharmacoat have been available(3, 6 and 15cP) until now. the 6cP type has been considered to be the most suitable for a tablet coating amongst the three types. The 3 cP type with a low degree of polymerization, is capable of providing high concentration, but the film strength is so inferior that sometimes cracking of the film may occur. On the other hand, in the case of the 15cP type, high polymer concentration cannot be achieved because of the high dgree of polymerization, and thus it is uneconomical for coating. Now, there is a strong demand to reduce the coating time even when HPMC is used in the 6cP type in order to reduce the coating cost. In order to improve this problem, we have concentrated our attention on reducing the viscosity value of HPMC to an allowable lower limit from 6cP. As a result of this study, it was found that the reduction of the viscosity value to around 4.5cP enabled the use of a higher solution concentration and an incidental shorter coating time without giving any substantial adverse effects on the properties of coated preparations. These experiment results are presented in the later part of this presentation. Based on this study, we have added the viscosity type of 4.5cP as one of the Pharmacoat products as Pharmacoat-645.
This study was conducted to stable direct sowing cultivation with seedling growth promotion by plant growth regulator treatment in onion seed(Allium cepa L.) The emergence percentage of soaked seed in BA, GA$_3$, and kinetin solution were higher than control seed, and those were 93.0, 94.3, 93.8%, respectively. The plant height was significant elongation in growth regulators treated seed, and those effects were high GA$_3$, kinetin and BA in the order, and the extend were high as increasing the growth regulator solution concentration in GA$_3$ and BA, and that was reverse in kinetin. The No. of leaf was increased in growth regulators treated seed, and the extend were similar among the growth regulators. The No. of root was increased significantly in growth regulators treated seed, and the extend were high in GA$_3$, BA and kinetin in the order.
