  • Photoinhibition and photoprotection of PSII in the leaves of hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) grown in Hoagland solution and Tap water were compared. Though changes in the rates of $O_2$ evolution as a function of photon fluence rate (PFR) were comparable, the rates of respiration in the dark was 3 times higher in the Hoagland solution grown leaves than in the Tap-water grown ones. Compared to Hoagland solution grown plane, PSIIs of Tap water grown pepper leaves were more susceptible to photoinhibitory light treatment. In order to inactivate functional PSII to the same extents, Hoagland solution grown plants required almost 2-fold high light $(1600{\mu}molm^{-2}s^-)$ treatment than those of Tap water $(900{\mu}molm^{-2}s^-)$. Interestingly, the remaining fraction of PSII in Hoagland grown pepper was able to survive under prolonged illumination in the presence of lincomycin, which probably means that the growth condition of plant seemed to have an effect on the recovery of PSII from light stress. When PSII was severly photoinactivated at a chilling temperature, recovery was observed only if the residual functional PSII were not inhibited with DCMU, Nigericin and MV during recovery. In conclusion, PSIIs grown in the Hoagland solution was more resistant to excess light than in the Tap water grown one and the recovery of PSII from photodamage was more efficient in Hoagland grown pepper leaves than Tap water grown one, which means that the increased dark respiration may play a important role in the protection of PSII from photoinhibition by helping repair photosynthetic proteins (in particular, the D1 protein of PSII) degraded by photoinhibition.

  • In order to recover pure alumina from black dross, leaching of mechanically activated black dross with NaOH solution resulted in an aluminate solution containing a small amount of Si(IV). Selective adsorption of Si(IV) onto hydrotalcite was investigated from 5 M NaOH solution where the concentration of Al(III) and Si(IV) was 13000 and 150 mg/L, respectively. Only Si(IV) was selectively loaded onto hydrotalcite, while Al(III) remained in the solution. Effect of the calcination treatment of hydrotalcite and concentration of calcined hydrotalcite and NaOH on the loading of Si(IV) was investigated. Although the loading percentage of Si(IV) was low from 5 M NaOH solution, most of the Si(IV) was removed by adjusting the concentration of NaOH by 48 times dilution with water when the concentration of calcined hydrotalcite was higher than 4.5 g/L. The loading of Si(IV) onto calcined hydrotalcite followed Freundlich adsorption isotherm.

  • We have investigated the transient behavior of 1D fully developed Poiseuille viscoelastic flow under finite pressure gradient described by the Oldroyd-B and Leonov constitutive equations. For analysis we employ a simple $2^{nd}$ order discretization scheme such as central difference for space and the Crank-Nicolson for time approximation. For the analysis of the Oldroyd-B model, we also apply the analytical solution, which is obtained again in this work in terms of elementary solution procedure simpler than the previous one (Waters and King, 1970). Both models demonstrate qualitatively similar solutions, but their eventual steady flowrate exhibits noticeable difference due to the absence or presence of shear thinning behavior. In the inertialess flow, the flowrate instantaneously attains a large value corresponding to the Newtonian creeping flow and then decreases to its steady value when the applied pressure gradient is low. However with finite liquid density the flow field shows severe fluctuation even accompanying reversals of flow directions. As the assigned pressure gradient increases, the flowrate achieves its steady value significantly higher than its value during oscillations after quite long period of time. We have also illustrated comparison between 1D and 2D results and possible mechanism of complex 2D flow rearrangement employing a previous solution of [mite element computation. In addition, we discuss some mathematical points regarding missing boundary conditions in 2D modeling due to the change of the type of differential equations when varying from inertialess to inertial flow.

  • Two azole compounds viz., Imidazole (IM) and 2-Methylimidazole (2-MIM) were studied to investigate their inhibiting action on corrosion of mild steel in phosphoric acid ($H_3PO_4$) solution by mass loss and polarization techniques at 302K-333K. It has been found that the inhibition efficiency of the all inhibitors increased with increase in inhibitor concentration and decreases with increasing temperature and also with increase in acid concentrations. The inhibition efficiency of these compounds showed very good inhibition efficiency. At 0.5% of IM and 2-MIM in 1N and 5N phosphoric acid solution at 302K to 333K for 5 hours immersion period, the inhibition efficiency of 2-Methylimidazole found to be higher than Imidazole. The adsorption of these compounds on the mild steel surface from the acids has been found to obey Tempkin's adsorption isotherm. The values of activation energy ($E{\alpha}$) and free energy of adsorption (${\Delta}G{\alpha}ds$) were also calculated. The plots of log $W_f$ against time (days) at 302K give straight line which suggested that it obeys first order kinetics and also calculate the rate constant k and half life time $t_{1/2}$. Surface was analyzed by SEM and FITR spectroscopy.

  • 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde(3,4-DHB) was oxidatively el electropolymerized on glassy carbon (GC) electrodes to prepare CC/p-3,4-DHB type electrodes, which were subsequently modified with 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid(3,4-DHBA) using 0.05M HCI as a catalyst. The esterification reactions were performed between -OH sites on the polymeric film surface of the p-3,4-DHB and the -COOH sites within the 3,4-DHBA molecules in solution. These reactions had a rate constant value of $1.1\times10^{-1}\;s^{-1}$ for the esterification step as obtained from the first-order rate constant in the solution. The electrochemical responses of the GC/p-3,4-DHB-3,4-DHBA electrodes exert an influence upon the buffer solution, its pH and applied potential ranges. The redox process of the electrode was more easily controlled by charge transfer kinetics than that of the CC/p-3,4-DHB. The modified electrodes had redox active sites that were 10 times more active than those present before modification. The electrical admittance of the modified electrodes was also three times higher than that of the unmodified electrodes. After being annealed in ethanol for 20 hrs the electrodes brought about a 3.3 times greater change of water molecules in the redox reaction. The modified electrodes are stable in the potential range of 0.4 to 0.55V.

  • The present work relates to the recovery of dissolved Mo from spent mandrel dissolving acid solution by injecting ammonia gas. In order to optimize the process parameters for high yield and high purity of recovered Mo products, a bench scale and a pilot scale experiments were carried out. As a result, more than 99.5% of Mo in spent acid was recovered in the form of ammonium molybdate(4MoO$_3$.$2NH_3$.$H_2$O). The purity of Mo products recovered was higher than 99.5%. In addition, the mother liquor, residual solution after precipitation and filtration of ammonium molybdate solid particles, could be utilized as fertilizers.

  • The thiosulfate reductase gene (PhsABC) from Salmonella typhimurium was expressed in Escherichia coli in order to produce sulfide from inorganic thiosulfate and precipitate metals as metal sulfide complexes. A 5.1-kb DNA fragment containing the native phsABC and a 3.7-kb DNA fragment, excluding putative promoter and regulatory regions were inserted into expression vectors pTrc99A and pJB866, respectively. Upon expression of phsABC, E. coli DH5$\alpha$ harboring the phsABC constructs showed higher thiosulfate reductase activity and produced significantly more sulfide than the control strain (E. coli DH5$\alpha$) under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Among the four constructs, E. coli DH5$\alpha$ harboring pSB74 produced the highest level of thiosulfate reductase and removed most of heavy metals from solution under anaerobic conditions. In a mixture of 100 $\mu$M each of cadmium, lead, and zinc, the strain could remove $99\%$ of the total metals from solution within 10 hours. Cadmium was removed first, lead second, and zinc last. In contrast, a negative control did not produce any measurable sulfide and removed very little metals from solution. These results have important implications for removal of metals from wastewater contaminated with several metals.

  • Three macrophytes species, that are, Phragmites australis, Zizania latifolia and Typha angustifolia were grown in mono culture in order to compare growth (relative biomass increase rate), variation of photosynthetic pigment (total chlorophyll, Chl a, Chl b and Chl a/Chl b) and effectiveness of nutriment removal in 15%o NaCl-salt solution or processed-leachate (salinity 19.6%o) from sanitary landfill sites. The relative biomass increase rate of p. australis was significantly higher than Z. latifolia and T. angustifolia. In the case of processed-leachate treatment, the relative biomass increase rates of above-part, rhizome and root of P. australiswere 178 %, 148 % and 157 %, respectively. Also, in 15%o NaCl-salt solution treatment, the relative biomass increase rates of P. australis increased as follows; 161 % (above-part), 183 % (rhizome) and 112 % (root). Total chlorophyll contents increased significantly in the leaves of P. australis and Z. latifolia grown in 15%o NaCl-salt solution and processed-leachate. Among three macrophytes, P. australis was evaluated as most effective macrophyte for the biological retreatment of processed-leachate from sanitary landfill sites.

  • In order to formulate biphenyl dimethyl dicarboxylate(DDB) aqueous solutions, the effects of various solubilizing agents such as cosolvents(PG, PEG 400, glycerin, ethanol), surfactants,$(poloxamer\;407,\;Cremophor^{\circledR}\; RH40,\;Solutol^{\circledR},\;Tween\;80,\;sodium\;lauryl\;sulfate)$, complexation agent$(CELDEX^{\circledR}\;CH-20)$ and others(urea, niacinamide, propylene carbonate, HPMC) on the solubility of DDB in water were evaluated. The solubility of DDB in water was about $0.21\;{\mu}g/ml\;at\;20^{\circ}C$, while its solubility in PEG 400 was 5,000 times higher than that in water. 60% PEG 400 aqueous solution was selected as an optimum solvent system, and surfactants or other solubilizing agents were added to prevent DDB from recrystalization. The addition of surfactants in water increased the solubility of DDB from 15- to 34-fold, however, $CELDEX^{\circledR}\;CH-20$ and other agents studied showed negligible effects on the solubility of DDB in water. The 60% PEG 400 aqueous solution containing 5% $Cremophor^{\circledR}$ RH40 was appeared as the formula of choice. It showed acceptable physical stability after stored for 7 days at $4^{\circ}C$.

  • In this paper, static and vibration analysis for anti-symmetric cross-ply and angle- ply carbon/glass hybrid laminates rectangular composite plate are presented. In this analysis, the equations of motion for simply supported thick laminated hybrid rectangular plates are derived and obtained through the use of Hamilton's principle. The closed-form solutions of anti-symmetric cross-ply and angle- ply laminates are obtained using Navier solution. The effects of side-to-thickness ratio, aspect ratio, and lamination schemes on the fundamental frequencies loads are investigated. The study concludes that shear deformation laminate theories accurately predict the behavior of composite laminates, whereas the classical laminate theory over predicts natural frequencies. The excellent accuracy of the present analytical solution is confirmed by making some comparisons of the present results with those available in the literature. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and simple in solving the free vibration behaviors of anti-symmetric cross-ply and angle- ply hybrid laminated composite plates.
