Counter-current two-phase flows of air- water in narrow rectangular channels with offset strip fins have been experimentally investigated in a 760 mm long and 100 mm wide test section with 3.0 and 5.0 mm gap widths. The two-phase flow regime, channel-average void fractions and two-phase pressure gradients were studied. Flow regime transition occurred at lower superficial velocities of air than in the channels without fins. In the bubbly and slug flow regimes, elongated bubbles rose along the subchannel formed by fins without lateral movement. The critical void fraction for the bubbly-to-slug transition was about 0.14 for the 3 mm gap channel and 0.2 for the 5 mm gap channel. respectively. Channel-average void fractions in the channels with fins were almost the same as those in the channels without fins. Void fractions increased as the gap width increased, especially at high superficial velocity of air. The presence of fins enhanced the two-phase distribution parameter significantly in the slug flow, where the effect of gap width was almost negligible. Superficial velocity of air dominated the two-phase pressure gradients. Liquid superficial velocity and channel gap width has only a minor effect on the pressure gradients.

As environmental problems are important, automotive industries are developing various techniques to prevent air pollution. One of these is Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system. It removes blowby gas which includes about 30% hydrocarbon of total generated quantity. In this system, a PCV valve is attached in a manifold suction tube to control the flow rate of blowby gas which generates differently according to various operating conditions of an automotive engine. As this valve is very important, designers are feeling to design it because of both small size and high velocity. For this reason, we numerically investigated to understand both spool dynamic motion and internal fluid flow characteristics. As the results, spool dynamic characteristics, i.e. displacement, velocity, acting force, increase in direct proportion to the magnitude of differential pressure and indicate periodic oscillating motions. And, the velocity at the orifice region decreases according to the increase of differential pressure because of energy loss which is caused by the sudden decrease of flow area at the orifice region and the increase of flow volume in the front of spool head. Finally, the mass flow rate at the outlet decreases with the increase of spool displacement. We expect that PCV valve designers can easily understand fluid flow inside a PCV valve with our visual information for their help.
An experimental study was carried out in a three-dimensional cubic cavity driven by 2-dimensional plane Poiseuille flow for three kinds of Reynolds number, $10^4$, 3 $\times$$10^4$ and 5 $\times$$10^4$ based on the cavity width and cavity inlet mean flow velcoity. Instant simultaneous velocity vectors at whole field were measured by 2-D PIV system. Laser based illumination and two-frame grey-level cross correlation algorithm are adopted. Severe unsteady flow fluctuation within the cavity are remarkable at above Re = 3 $\times$$10^4$ Reynolds numbers and sheared mixing layer phenomena are also found at the region where inlet driving Poiseuille flow is collided with the clock-wise rotating main primary vortex at upper center area. Instant velocity profiles reveal that deformed forced vortex formation is observed throughout the separate two areas.
In comparison with previous researches for swirling flow, the spiral flow self-generated in the spiral flow nozzle has some different characteristics. It is not needed a compulsive tangential momentum to get its velocity component and has long potential core, relatively low swirl ratio, and high focusing ability. In this study, the self-generated mechanism of the spiral flow was clarified and the effect on the width of annular slit on spiral flow characteristics was investigated experimentally and numerically. As a result, the existence of tangential velocity component regardless of a compulsive angular momentum is clarified and the results obtained by experiment have a satisfactory agreement with those by numerical method, quantitatively and qualitatively.

The near-wall flow structures of turbulent boundary layer over riblets having semi-circular grooves were investigated experimentally for the drag decreasing ($s^+=25.2$) and drag increasing ($s^+=40.6$) cases. The field of view used for tho velocity field measurement was $6.75{\times}6.75mm^2$ in physical dimension, containing two grooves. One thousand instantaneous velocity fields over the riblets were extracted for each case of drag increase and decrease. For comparison, five hundreds instantaneous velocity fields over a smooth flat plate were also obtained under the same flow conditions. To see the global flow structure qualitatively, the flow visualization was also performed using the synchronized smoke-wire technique. For the drag decreasing case ($s^+=25.2$), most of the streamwise vortices stay above the riblets, interacting with the riblet tips. The high-speed in-rush flow toward the riblet surface rarely influences the flow inside tho riblet valleys submerged in the viscous sublayer. The riblet tips seem to impede the spanwise movement of the longitudinal vortices and induce secondary vortices. The turbulent kinetic energy in the riblet valley is sufficiently small to compensate the increased wetted area of the riblets. In addition, in the logarithmic region, the turbulent kinetic energy are small or almost equal to that of a smooth flat plato. For the drag increasing case ($s^+=40.6$), however, the streamwise vortices move into the riblet valley freely, interacting directly with the riblet inner surface. The penetration of the high-speed in-rush flow on the riblets increases tho skin-friction. The turbulent kinetic energy is increased in the riblet valleys and even in the outer region compared to that over a flat plate.

In this study, the mixing process of two distinct flow is numerically investigated. Two flow with different physical properties (resin and hardener) are mixed through the opposing mixing jets. At a high pressure mixing process, the high speed flow is provided by two in-line nozzles. In the case of numerical modeling, Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Equations (RANS) is conducted to model the flow pattern inside the chamber. Additionally, SST k-omega turbulence model is selected to predict the kinetic energy of flow in impingement zone. The results show that mixing of two distinct flows would be efficient if the velocity of jet is high enough and nozzle diameter is a predominant parameter. Also, this velocity would create higher shear stress between two distinct flows which increases the mixing quality as well as strength of formed vortices. Eventually, the histogram of concentration fraction of resin is examined in order to show the quality of mixing and the range of concentration fractions in the output of chamber.
To develop a piezoelectric inkjet printhead for high-resolution and high-speed printing, we studied the characteristics of an inkjet printhead by analyzing the major design parameters. An analytical model for the inkjet printhead was established, and numerical analysis of the coupled first-order differential equation for the defined state variables was performed using state equations. To design the dimension of the inkjet printhead with a driving frequency of 100 kHz, the characteristics of the flow rate and discharge pressure of the nozzle were analyzed with respect to design variables of the flow chamber, effective sound wave velocity, driving voltage, and voltage waveform. It was predicted that the change in the height of the flow chamber does not significantly affect the Helmholtz resonance frequency and discharge speed of the nozzle. From the analysis of change in flow chamber width, it is observed that as the width of the flow chamber increases, the ejection speed greatly increases and the Helmholtz resonance frequency decreases considerably, thereby substantially affecting the performance of the inkjet printhead.
High velocity, gas-assisted liquid drop trajectories were investigated under well-controlled experimental conditions at elevated gas densities and room temperature. A monodisperse stream of drops which are generated by a vibrating-orifice drop generator were injected into a transverse high velocity gas stream. The gas density and air jet velocity were adjusted independently to keep the Weber numbers constant. The Weber numbers studied were 72, 148, 270, 532. The range of experimental conditions included studied the three drop breakup regimes previously referred as bag, stretching/thinning and catastrophic breakup regimes. High-magnification photography and conventional spray field photographs were taken to study the microscopic breakup mechanisms and the drop trajectories in high velocity gas flow fields, respectively. The parent drop trajectories were affected by the gas density and the gas jet velocities and do not show similarity with respect to the either Weber or the Reynolds number, as expected.

In the very low specific speed range ($n_s=0.24$ < 0.25, non-dimensional), the efficiency of centrifugal pump designed by a conventional method is very low in common. Therefore, positive-displacement pumps have long been used widely. Recently, since the centrifugal pumps are becoming higher in rotational speed and smaller in size, there expects to develop a new centrifugal pump with a high performance to replace the positive-displacement pumps. The purpose of this study is to investigate the internal flow characteristics of a very low specific speed centrifugal pump and to examine the effect of internal flow pattern on pump performance. The results show that the theoretical head definition of semi-open impeller should be revised by the consideration of high slip factor in the semi-open impeller, and the leakage flow through the tip clearance results in a large effect on the impeller internal flow. Strong reverse flow at the outlet of semi-open impeller reduces the absolute tangential velocity considerably, and the decreased absolute tangential velocity increasese the slip factor with the reduction of theoretical head.

Methods to measure and estimate transpiration of a forest composed of evergreen broad-leaved trees (Pasania edulis Makino) are studied. Heat pulse velocity has been measured along with soil moisture and micrometeorological factors at the Fukuoka Experimental Forest, the Research Institute of Kyushu University Forests in Fukuoka, Japan (33$^{\circ}$38'N, 130$^{\circ}$31'E, alt. 75m). Tree cutting measurement was conducted to convert the heat pulse velocity into sap flow and transpiration. A big leaf model to calculate transpiration and Interception loss is examined and the estimated values are compared with the measured values obtained from the heat pulse measurement. The results show that 1) Pasania edulis Makino posessing radial pore structure had relatively high water content and high heat pulse velocity even within the central part of the stem near the pith, 2) the heat pulse velocity was well correspond to the water uptake in the tree cutting measurement, 3) the estimation of sap flow based on the heat pulse velocity is accurate, and 4) the big leaf model using the parameters obtained from measurement of a portable photosynthesis system in one day in summer gives reasonable estimation of transpiration independent of seasons and weather.
