Passenger safety is one of the most important considerations in the purchase of an automobile. A curtain-type air bag is increasingly adapted in deluxe cars for protecting passengers from the danger of side clash. Inflator housing is a main part of the curtain-type air bag system for supplying high-pressure gases to pump up the air bag-curtain. Although the inflator housing is fundamental in designing a curtain-type air bag system, flow information on the inflator housing is very limited. In this study, we measured instantaneous velocity fields of a high-speed flow ejecting from the inflator housing using a dynamic PIV system. From the velocity field data measured at a high frame-rate, we evaluated the variation of the mass flow rate with time. From the instantaneous velocity fields of flow ejecting from the airbag inflator housing in the initial stage, we can see a flow pattern of broken shock wave front and its downward propagation. The flow ejecting from the inflator housing was found to have large velocity fluctuations and the maximum velocity was about 700m/s. The velocity of high-speed flow was decreased rapidly and the duration of high-speed flow over 400m/s was maintained only to 30ms. After 100ms, there was no perceptible flow.
To investigate the behavior of reaction products with the reactor heights by the change of upflow velocity, a typical real height USAB reactor was built and experiment was conducted. The flow in the reactor by the upflow velocity was flug flow at low upflow velocity but the flow was completely mixed flow at high upflow velocity. Therefore, the concentration of pH, alkalinity and volatile acid was not so different with reactor heights at high upflow velocity. And comparing with low upflow velocity, the distribution of microorganisms with reactor heights did not show big different at high upflow velocity. The removal efficiency of organic compounds depended on the distribution of microorganisms and it was low at high upflow velocity. It is concluded that the operation of reactor with proper upflow velocity to improve contact with organic compounds and microorganisms is recommended.
Large Eddy Simulations (LES) were carried out to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of a rectangular cylinder with side ratio B/D=5 at Reynolds number Re=22,000 (based on cylinder thickness). Particular attention was devoted to the effects of velocity shear in the oncoming flow. Time-averaged and unsteady flow patterns around the cylinder were studied to enhance understanding of the effects of velocity shear. The simulation results showed that the Strouhal number has no significant variation with oncoming velocity shear, while the peak fluctuation frequency of the drag coefficient becomes identical to that of the lift coefficient with increase in velocity shear. The intermittently-reattached flow that features the aerodynamics of the 5:1 rectangular cylinder in non-shear flow becomes more stably reattached on the high-velocity side, and more stably separated on the low-velocity side. Both the mean and fluctuating drag coefficients increase slightly with increase in velocity shear. The mean and fluctuating lift and moment coefficients increase almost linearly with velocity shear. Lift force acts from the high-velocity side to the low-velocity side, which is similar to that of a circular cylinder but opposite to that of a square cylinder under the same oncoming shear flow.
Velocity and density distributions of a high-speed and initial $CO_{2}$ jet flow have been analyzed simultaneously by a developed three-dimensional digital speckle tomography and a particle image velocimetry(PIV). Three high-speed cameras have been used for tomography and PIV since a shape of a nozzle for the jet flow is asymmetric and the initial flow is fast and unsteady, The speckle movements between no flow and $CO_{2}$ jet flow have been obtained by a cross-correlation tracking method so that those distances can be transferred to deflection angles of laser rays for density gradients. The three-dimensional density fields for the high-speed $CO_{2}$ jet flow have been reconstructed from the deflection angles by a real-time tomography method and the two-dimensional velocity fields have been calculated by a PIV method simultaneously and instantaneously.
This study investigates the effects of sediment on the flow characteristics such as velocity distribution, friction velocity, turbulent intensities, Reynolds stress, etc. Particle tracking velocimetry (PTY) is used to measure the vertical flow field. Results show that flow over the high bed-load concentration region has larger values of mean velocity and friction velocity and smaller values of turbulence intensities, compared to those for flow over the low bed-load concentration region.
The transient nature and complex flow geometries of two-phase gas-liquid flows cause fundamental difficulties when measuring flow velocity using an electromagnetic flowmeter. Recently, a current-sensing flowmeter was introduced to obtain measurements with high temporal resolution (Ahn et $al.^{(1)}$). In this study, current-sensing flowmeter theory was applied to measure the fast velocity transients in slug flows. To do this, the velocity fields of axisymmetric gas-liquid slug flow in a vertical pipe were obtained using Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) method and the virtual potential distributions for the electrodes of finite size were also computed using the finite volume method for the simulated slug flow. The output signal prediction for slug flow was carried out from the velocity and virtual potential (or weight function) fields. The flowmeter was numerically calibrated to obtain the cross-sectional liquid mean velocity at an electrode plane from the predicted output signal. Two calibration parameters are required for this procedure: a flow pattern coefficient and a localization parameter. The flow pattern coefficient was defined by the ratio of the liquid resistance between the electrodes for two-phase flow with respect to that for single-phase flow, and the localization parameter was introduced to avoid errors in the flowmeter readings caused by liquid acceleration or deceleration around the electrodes. These parameters were also calculated from the computed velocity and virtual potential fields. The results can be used to obtain the liquid mean velocity from the slug flow signal measured by a current-sensing flowmeter.
Passenger safety is fundamental factor in automobile. Among much equipment for passenger safety, the air bag system is the most fundamental and effective device. Beside of the front air bag system which installed on most of all automobiles, a curtain-type air bag is increasingly adapted in deluxe cars fur protecting passengers from the danger of side clash. Curtain type airbag system consists of inflator housing, fill hose, curtain airbag. Inflator housing is a main part of the curtain-type air bag system for supplying high-pressure gases to deploy the air bag-curtain. Fill hose is a passageway to carry the gases from inflator housing to each part of curtain airbag. Therefore, it is very important to design the vent holes of fill hose for good performance of airbag deployment. But, the flow information from vent holes of fill hose is very limited. In this study, we measured instantaneous velocity fields of a high-speed flow ejecting from the vent holes of fill hose using a dynamic PIV system. From the velocity Held data measured at a high frame-rate, we evaluated the variation of the mass flow rate with time. From the instantaneous velocity fields of flow ejecting from the vent holes in the initial stage, we can see a flow pattern of wavy motion and fluctuation. The flow ejecting from the vent holes was found to have very high velocity fluctuations and the maximum velocity was about 480m/s at 4-vent hole region. From the mass flow rate with time, the accumulated flow of 4-vent hole has occupied about 70% of total flow rate.

The objective of experimental study is to apply simultaneous measurement by PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) to high_speed flow characteristics within ginseng cleaner model. Three different kinds of flow rate(15.20 27ℓ/min) are selected as experimental condition. Optimized cross correlation identification to obtain velocity vectors is implemented by direct calculation of correlation coefficients. The instantaneous velocity distribution time0mean velocity distribution and velocity profile are represented quantitatively for the deeper understanding of the flow characteristics in a ginseng cleaner model.

The butterfly valve is widely used in the industrial field as an on-off or a flow control valve. When the butterfly valve is used as a flow control valve. cavitation sometimes occurs in the range of high flow rate because of the small valve opening. Therefore. the pressure loss and the cavitation characteristics are investigated by use of a commercial CFD code. The results show that the possibility of cavitation occurrence in the cryogenic butterfly valve is very high in the case of valve opening angle below 10 degree and incident velocity over 6m/s. By increasing the inlet velocity at 10 degree of valve opening angle. the value of loss coefficient increased. However. by increasing the inlet velocity at 50 degree of valve opening angle. the value of loss coefficient decreased.
The present study addresses an analytical investigation to understand the characteristics of gas flow in the High-Velocity Oxy-Fuel(HVOF) thermal spray gun. One-dimensional analysis is extended to involve the effects of the wall friction and powder particle diameter. From the present analysis it is well known that the flow characteristics inside and outside the thermal spray gun is varied depending on the combustion chamber pressure. The thermal spray gun flow is characterized by six different patterns. The powder particle size and wall friction significantly influence the powder particle velocity. The particle velocity decreases with an increase in the powder particle size. This implies that the combustion chamber pressure should be increased to achieve a higher velocity of the powder particle.
