Turbidity has various effects on the water quality and ecosystem of a river. High turbidity during floods increases the operation cost of a drinking water supply system. Thus, the management of turbidity is essential for providing safe water to the public. There have been various efforts to estimate turbidity in river systems for proper management and early warning of high turbidity in the water supply process. Advanced data analysis technology using machine learning has been increasingly used in water quality management processes. Artificial neural networks(ANNs) is one of the first algorithms applied, where the overfitting of a model to observed data and vanishing gradient in the backpropagation process limit the wide application of ANNs in practice. In recent years, deep learning, which overcomes the limitations of ANNs, has been applied in water quality management. LSTM(Long-Short Term Memory) is one of novel deep learning algorithms that is widely used in the analysis of time series data. In this study, LSTM is used for the prediction of high turbidity(>30 NTU) in a river from the relationship of turbidity to discharge, which enables early warning of high turbidity in a drinking water supply system. The model showed 0.98, 0.99, 0.98 and 0.99 for precision, recall, F1-score and accuracy respectively, for the prediction of high turbidity in a river with 2 hour frequency data. The sensitivity of the model to the observation intervals of data is also compared with time periods of 2 hour, 8 hour, 1 day and 2 days. The model shows higher precision with shorter observation intervals, which underscores the importance of collecting high frequency data for better management of water resources in the future.
In this study, we have performed some experimental works on the effects of variation of low, middle and high turbidity for understanding of optical characteristics which is very important factor for the turbidity measurement. The various output frequencies were obtained by the experimental apparatus which consist of detectors, a light source, a frequency counter and so on. From the result of analysis of these frequencies, Firstly, The difference of signal value for each degrees of low turbidity was the smallest of three scopes around the Nephelometric position. Second, the characteristics of each degrees of middle turbidity was proved that signal values of all degrees were larger those of low turbidity but the difference of each signal value of the forward direction was smaller than that of the backward direction. Third, the characteristics of each degrees of high turbidity was proved that though similar to the characteristics of middle turbidity, each signal value of all degrees was larger and the difference of each signal value of all degrees was smaller than those of low and middle turbidity

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the applicability of Horizontal Flow Fins Inclined Plate (HFIP) for the removal of high-turbidity raw water in water treatment plant. As an experimental result, treated water quality and removal efficiency were 0.34 NTU and 90.45% by the application of HFIP for low-turbidity raw water and for the high-turbidity influent resulted 0.75 NTU and 97.27% in removal efficiency. In view of stability for discharge water NTU, the standard deviation were found as 0.12 NTU for low-turbidity and 0.75 NTU for high-turbidity raw water indicating low fluctuations. Result of flow analysis using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamic) that the addition of HFIP improves the turbidity treatment followed by the stabilization of flow velocity distribution and increases in settling velocity.

The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of raw water pH and basicity of coagulants on turbidity removal with several raw waters having different level of turbidity, alkalinity and pH. Raw waters were sampled from M, S and B water treatment plants(WTP) located at Miryang, Nakdong, Han river, respectively. Six coagulants which have different levels of basicity and aluminum contents were used for this evaluation. High basicity of the coagulant helped to properly control coagulation processes for treating turbid and low alkali raw water. It was difficult for operators to determine optimum coagulant dose for high basicity coagulants, since residual turbidity tended to decrease continuously as coagulant dose increased. Turbidity removal efficiencies with high basicity coagulants(E and F) were higher than the other coagulants at ambient pH for the M WTP. Turbidity removal efficiencies, however, at adjusted pH 7.0 showed similar among six coagulants. Residual turbidity kept low at excess dosages with high basicity coagulants. Optimum coagulant dosages at adjusted pH 7.0 showed higher than those at ambient pH in M WTP. On the contrary in B WTP, optimum coagulant dosage at ambient pH were higher than that at adjusted pH 7.0.

Recently, power plant effluent condensers received a Renewable Energy Certificate as components of hydrothermal energy (weighted 1.5 times) as one target item of the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) policy. Accordingly, more attention is being paid to the value of thermal wastewater as a heat source. However, for utilization of thermal wastewater from power plants in high-turbidity areas like the West Sea of Korea, a turbidity reducing system is required to reduce system contamination. In this study, an experimental test was performed over a month on thermal wastewater from power plants located in the West Sea of Korea. It was found that water turbidity was reduced by more than 80 % and that the concentration of organic materials and nutrient salts was partially reduced due to the reduction of floating/drifting materials. To conduct a comparative analysis of the level of contamination of the heat exchanger when thermal wastewater flows in through a turbidity reducing system versus when the condenser effluent flows in directly without passing through the turbidity system, we disassembled and analyzed heat exchangers operated for 30 days. As a result, it was found that the heat exchanger without a turbidity reducing system had a higher level of contamination. Main contaminants (scale) that flowed in to the heat exchanger included minerals such as $SiO_2$, $Na(Si_3Al)O_8$, $CaCO_3$ and NaCl. It was estimated that marine sediment soil flowed in to the heat exchanger because of the high level of turbidity in the water-intake areas.

Turbidity, the measure of the cloudiness of water, is used as an important index for water quality management. The turbidity can vary greatly in small river systems, which affects water quality in national rivers. Therefore, the generation of high-resolution spatial information on turbidity is very important. In this study, a turbidity retrieval model using the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-3 and -3A (KOMPSAT-3/3A) images was developed for high-resolution turbidity mapping of Han River system based on eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm. To this end, the top of atmosphere (TOA) spectral reflectance was calculated from a total of 24 KOMPSAT-3/3A images and 150 Landsat-8 images. The Landsat-8 TOA spectral reflectance was cross-calibrated to the KOMPSAT-3/3A bands. The turbidity measured by the National Water Quality Monitoring Network was used as a reference dataset, and as input variables, the TOA spectral reflectance at the locations of in situ turbidity measurement, the spectral indices (the normalized difference vegetation index, normalized difference water index, and normalized difference turbidity index), and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-derived atmospheric products(the atmospheric optical thickness, water vapor, and ozone) were used. Furthermore, by analyzing the KOMPSAT-3/3A TOA spectral reflectance of different turbidities, a new spectral index, new normalized difference turbidity index (nNDTI), was proposed, and it was added as an input variable to the turbidity retrieval model. The XGBoost model showed excellent performance for the retrieval of turbidity with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 2.70 NTU and a normalized RMSE (NRMSE) of 14.70% compared to in situ turbidity, in which the nNDTI proposed in this study was used as the most important variable. The developed turbidity retrieval model was applied to the KOMPSAT-3/3A images to map high-resolution river turbidity, and it was possible to analyze the spatiotemporal variations of turbidity. Through this study, we could confirm that the KOMPSAT-3/3A images are very useful for retrieving high-resolution and accurate spatial information on the river turbidity.

The study aims to assess the quality of bank filtrate in relation to streamflow and physico-chemical properties of the stream. Turbidity, pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) of Nakdong River and riverbank filtrate were statistically analyzed. The physico-chemical properties of riverbank filtrate were measured from irregularly different seven pumping wells every day. Autocorrelation analyses were conducted to the qualities of stream water and bank filtrated water. Temperature, pH and DO of streamflow shows strong linearity and long memory effect, indicating the effect of seasonal air temperature and rainy season. Temperature of riverbank filtrate shows weak linearity and weak memory, indicating differently from the trend of stream temperature. Turbidity of steramflow shows strong linearity and long memory effect, while turbidity of riverbank filtrate indicates weak linearity and weak memory. Cross-correlation analysis shows low relation between turbidity, pH, temperature and DO of riverbank filtrate and those of streamflow. Turbidity of streamflow was largely affected by the streamflow rate, showing a similar trend with autocorrelation function of streamflow rate. The turbidity of riverbank filtrate has a lag time of 25 hours. This indicates that turbidity of streamflow in a dry season has very low effect on the turbidity of riverbank filtrate, and a high turbidity of the stream in a rainy season has a fairly low effect on the turbidity of riverbank filtrate.
The removal of protozoa in the coagulation process was evaluated under the different pH and turbidity using the jar test after the addition of polyaluminium chloride (PAC) as a coagulant. Two well-known protozoa of Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia were tested at the same time with turbidity, the critical water quality parameter of the water treatment process. Both protozoa were removed about 1log (and up to 2log) at the optimum injection of PAC. The source water turbidity and pH affected the removal of protozoa and turbidity. At neutral and alkaline pH, 1.3-1.7log removal of protozoa for low turbid water with 5NTU, and 1.6-2.3log removal for high turbid water with 30NTU were achieved. However, at acidic pH, maximum 0.8-1.0log and 1.1-1.2log were removed for low and high turbid water, respectively, at the optimum PAC injection of 15mg/L. The relation of protozoa and turbidity removals were expressed as the 1st order equation (significantly positive relation) in the most of the tested conditions. In addition, the relation of protozoan removals with residual turbidity were also expressed the 1st order equation (significantly negative relation), although the significance of the equations were reduced at acidic pH. Therefore, residual turbidity could be a good index of efficient protozoan removal in the coagulation process, probably except at the low pH condition.

Slow sand filtrations have been widely used for water treatment in small communities, however their capacity is often limited by high turbidity in the raw water. For this reason, several pre-treatment facilities were required for a slow sand filter. Turbidity removal from the highly turbid raw water was investigated in roughing filters as a pre-treatment process. The roughing filters followed by rapid mixing tank were operated in the form of a contact filtration. In several jar tests, the predetermined optimum aluminium sulfate (alum) doses for turbid water of 30 and 120NTU were 30 and 50mg/L, respectively. At the optimum alum dose, physically optimum parameters including G value of $220sec^{-1}$ and rapid mixing time of 3 minutes were applied to the contact filtration system. Without addition of alum, the filtrate turbidity from the roughing filters, packed respectively with different media such as sand, porous diatomite ball and gravel, was in the range of 5~30NTU at filtration velocities of 30 and 50m/day. However, the application of a contact filtration to roughing filters showed stably lower filtrate turbidity below 1.0NTU at filtration velocity of 30 m/day. Although the filtration velocity increased to 50m/day, filtrate turbidity was still below 1.0NTU in both single and double layer roughing filters. At influent turbidity of 120NTU, the filtrate turbidity was over 5 NTU in the triple layer roughing filter, which shortened the filter run time. The flocs larger than $10{\mu}m$, formed in the rapid mixing tank, were almost captured through the roughing filter bed, while the almost flocs smaller than $10{\mu}m$ remained in filtrate.

It was evaluated that the effect of turbidity removal by Pore Controllable Fiber Filter(PCF) installed in NS(Naksang) small water treatmant plant(system) using under flow water as raw water in the study. The results of the study are as the followings. Firstly, the removal efficiency of turbidity by PCF without coagulation(in operation mode not using coagulants) was mostly below 20 percent. On the other hand, when operation using proper coagulants, that of turbidity was mostly over 80 percent. Secondly, slow sand filtration after PCF, total turbidity removal efficiency of final treated water was 84.3 percent, and the contribution by PCF was 57.1 percent and that of slow sand filtration was 27.7 percent. Therefore the introduction of PCF as pre-treatment process would be helpful to reduce the loading of high turbidity of slow sand filtration. Thirdly, the results of particle counter measurements showed that when operated PCF with coagulants, fine flocs captured or adsorbed at the pore of PCF were flow out into the effluents from 120 minutes after backwashing because of the increase of headloss of PCF. Therefore the decision of backwashing time should made consideration into the outflow of fine flocs from PCF. Fourth, coagulant dosages on PCF at the same turbidity was largely variable because of the effect of the raw water characteristics and the turbidity increase velocity at rainy days, therefore flexible coagulant dosages should be considered rather than fixed coagulant dosage by the influent jar-test result.
