Reliable velocity estimation technology for trains is one of technologies used to operate trains safely and effectively. Various sensors such as tachometers, doppler radars, and global positioning systems are used to estimate velocity of a train. Tachometer is widely used to estimate velocity of a trains due to its simplicity, small volume, cost-effectiveness, continuously measurement at high speed, and robustness against noise. Accuracy in the velocity calculation using a tachometer depends on quantization error, measurement error of wheel radius or diameter, and tachometer's imperfection from manufacturing or installation process. In this paper, we present an accurate velocity estimation method using a low-resolution tachometer, which is commonly installed on a high-speed train. Baseline estimation method is proposed to accurately calculate the velocity of the high-speed train from tachometer's pulses. HEMU-430x test train is used for the experiment and verification of the proposed method. Experimental results with several routes show that the proposed method is more accurate than a conventional method.
With conventional positioning apparatus, it is very difficult to simultaneously achieve the desired driving range and precision at the sub-micrometer level. Generally, lead screw and friction drive, etc., have been used as servo control systems. These have large driving ranges, and high-speed positioning is feasible. In this study, we present a global servo system controlled by a laser interferometer acting as a displacement measurement sensor for achieving positioning accuracy at the sub-micrometer level.

This study deals with the position control of a hydraulic cylinder system operated by two port 3-way high speed solenoid valve in Pulse-Width-Modulation mode, instead of using conventional electro-hydraulic servovalve. Due to the complexity and the relatively poor reliability of the servovalve, an actuator using simpler and more study high speed solenoid valve will be presented. The high speed solenoid valve acts as converters of electronic pulse signal to hydraulic ones. It has been pointed out that there are practical problems to be solved in the PWM system, that is (1) accuracy of positioning control becomes considerably insufficient because the system is affected by on/off action of the solenoid valves, and (2) serious nonlinerality appears in the valve characteristics as a result of the switching behavior of the valves. As a method to overcome these defects, the differential PWM driving method of a hydraulic cylinder that improved the steady-state-error, flow rate nonlinearity in simple PWM, and the hydraulic hunting of dead time compensated-PWM driving is proposed in this study.
Linear motors are efficient mechanism that offers high speed and positioning accuracy. By eliminating mechanical transmission mechanisms such as ball screw or rack-pinion, much higher speed and greater acceleration can be achieved without backlash or excessive friction. However, an important disadvantage of linear motor system is its high power loss and heating up of motor and neighboring machine components on operation. For the application of the linear motors to precision machine tools an effective cooling method and thermal optimizing measures are required. This paper presents an investigation into the thermal behavior of linear motors with the objective of deriving the optimum cooling conditions. To reach these goals several experiments were carried out, varying operating and cooling conditions. From the experimental results, this research proposed cooling conditions to improve the thermal characteristics of the linear motors.
Recently, the evolution in production techniques (e.g. high-speed milling) and the complex shapes involved in modem production design has been increasingly popular. The key to the achievement is a drastic improvement of the dynamic behavior of the machine tool axes used in production machinery. The more complex these tool paths the higher the speed and acceleration requirements. But it is very difficult to reach the target for high speed machine tool because of the limitations of servo system and motion control system. However the direct drive design of machine tool axes, which is based on linear motors and which recently appeared on the market, is a viable candidate to meet the ever increasing demands, because of these advantages such as no backlash, less friction, more mechanical simplicity and very higher acceleration and velocity comparing to the traditional system. This paper focused on the performance tests of the high speed horizontal machine tool based on linear motor. Especially, dynamic characteristics were investigated through circular test and circular form machining test is carried out considering many important parameter. Therefore these several experiments is used to be evaluated the model for prediction of circular motion error and circular machined error.
In this paper, the propulsion control of a high-speed maglev train is studied. Electromagnetic suspension is used to levitate the vehicle, and linear synchronous motors (LSM) are used for propulsion. In general, a low-speed maglev train uses a linear induction motor (LIM) for propulsion that is operated under 300[km/h] due to the power-collecting and end-effect problem of LIM. In case of the high-speed maglev train over 500[km/h], a linear synchronous motor (LSM) is more suitable than LIM because of a high-efficiency and high-output properties. An optical barcode positioning system is used to obtain the absolute position of the vehicle due to its wide working distance and ease of installation. However, because the vehicle is working completely contactless, the position measured on the vehicle has to be transmitted to the ground for propulsion control via wireless communication. For this purpose, Bluetooth is used and communication hardware is designed. A propulsion controller using a digital signal processor (DSP) in the ground receives the delayed position information, calculates the required currents, and controls the stator currents through inverters. The performance of the implemented propulsion control is analyzed with a small maglev train which was manufactured for experiments, and the applicability of the high-speed maglev train will be explored.
This paper presents a proposed position controller for a vector controlled induction motor. The position controller design depends on the rotational motion equations and a classical speed controller (CSC) performance. The CSC is designed to have the ability to track variable reference inputs and to provide a predefined system performance. Standard position controller in industry is presented to analyze its performance and its drawbacks. Then the proposed position controller is designed, based on the well defined rotational motion equations. The proposed position controller and the CSC are applied to control the position and speed of the vector controlled induction motor with different ratings. Simulation results at different operating conditions are presented to evaluate the proposed controllers' performance. The results show that the CSC can drive the motor with a predefined speed performance and can track a variable reference speed with an approximately zero steady state error. The results also show that the proposed position controller has the ability to effect high-precision positioning in a limited time and to track a variable reference position with a zero steady state error.
As the NNSS system calculates ship's position by the doppler shift of the NNSS radio waves caused by the change of the distance between Transit Satellite and the ship, ship's speed error inevitably results in the position error, and moreover this kind of erroris most dominant compared with other errors especially in high speed ships and airplanes. Most NNSS receivers now in use have adoptedsuccessive short doppler counts as positioning data and by investigating the dispersion of serval successive positions calculated and by neglecting the mean position having dispersion of over certain threshold level, more accurate adn safe position is to be achieved. This paper proposes the method of finding ship's true speed by selecting a speed having least position dispersion for given successive doppler counts. And by computer simulation it was verified that the method proposed here is reasonable in finding the ship's desired correct speed together with the correct ship's position.
Linear permanent magnet synchronous motors utilize high-energy product permanent magnet to produce high thrust, velocity and acceleration. Such motors are finding applications requiring high positioning accuracy and speed response, for example, machine tools, in the absence of mechanical gears and ball screw systems. A disadvantage of the linear motors is high power loss in comparison with rotary motors. For the application of the linear motors to machine tools, it is required to use water coolers and to improve the thermal behavior through insulation and structure optimization or control strategies. This paper presents the function of the secondary part of the linear synchronous motor as to the thermal behavior and the improving method. The result shows cooling pipe combined with an insulation layer is a suitable design for improving of the thermal behavior.
