Rainfall characteristics in Korea are concentrated during the summer flood season. In particular, when a large amount of turbid water flows into the dam due to the increasing trend of concentrated rainfall due to abnormal rainfall and abnormal weather conditions, prolonged turbid water phenomenon occurs due to the overturning phenomenon. Much research is being conducted on turbid water prediction to solve these problems. To predict turbid water, turbid water data from the upstream inflow is required, but spatial and temporal data resolution is currently insufficient. To improve temporal resolution, the development of the Turbidity-SS conversion equation is necessary, and to improve spatial resolution, multi-item water quality measurement instrument (YSI), Laser In-Situ Scattering and Transmissometry (LISST), and hyperspectral sensors are needed. Sensor-based measurement can improve the spatial resolution of turbid water by measuring line and surface unit data. In addition, in the case of LISST-200X, it is possible to collect data on particle size, etc., so it can be used in the Turbidity-SS conversion equation for fraction (Clay: Silt: Sand). In addition, among recent remote sensing methods, the spatial distribution of turbid water can be presented when using UAVs with higher spatial and temporal resolutions than other payloads and hyperspectral sensors with high spectral and radiometric resolutions. Therefore, in this study, the Turbidity-SS conversion equation was calculated according to the fraction through laboratory analysis using LISST-200X and YSI-EXO, and sensor-based field measurements including UAV (Matrice 600) and hyperspectral sensor (microHSI 410 SHARK) were used. Through this, the spatial distribution of turbidity and suspended sediment concentration, and the turbidity calculated using the Turbidity-SS conversion equation based on the measured suspended sediment concentration, was presented. Through this, we attempted to review the applicability of the Turbidity-SS conversion equation and understand the current status of turbid water occurrence.
Daily monitoring was conducted to elucidate the changes in turbidity and distribution of particles in the turbid water of a river-type reservoir (Paltang Reservoir) from 1999 to 2001. Water turbidity and the particle distribution of turbid water were principally affected by meteorological factors particularly rainfall patterns and hydrological factors such as inflow and outflow. The mean concentration of turbidity was constant each year, with the concentration of less than 10 NTU accounting for 85%. Seasonal characteristics were remarkable, with winter and spring having < 5 NTU, autumn 5 ${\sim}$ 10 NTU, and summer > 20 NTU. Unlike hydrological changes, maximum turbidity was observed from late July to early August and continuously increased from 1999 to 2001. In particular, the maximum turbidity of reservoirs remarkably increased toward the lower part of reservoir in 2001. Discharge and turbidity increased or decreased slowly in 1999; in contrast, turbidity rapidly increased in the early rainfall period of 2000 and 2001 but later decreased as discharge increased. In the particles of turbid water, clay ingredients were more densely distributed and more dominant in all stations. Of the total particles in turbid water, clay constituted 63.9${\sim}$66.6% and silt 33.4${\sim}$36.1% to account for a combined total of 98.9 ${\sim}$ 100%. Sand made up less than 1.1%. The turbidity of river-type reservoir was also found to be mainly affected by the biomass of plankton in a non-rainfall period. During a rainfall period, however, the quantity and relative ratio of inorganic particles depending on the soil components affected turbidity.

An integration study of watershed model(HSPF, Hydological Simulation program-Fortran) and reservoir water quality model (CE-QUAL-W2) was performed for the evaluation of turbid water management in Yongdam reservoir. The watershed model was calibrated and analyzed for flow and suspended solid concentration variation during rainy period, their results were inputted for reservoir water quality model as time-variable water temperature and turbidity. Results of the watershed model showed a good agreement with the field measurements of flow and suspended solid. Also, results of the reservoir water quality model showed a good agreement with the filed measurements of water balance, water temperature and turbidity using linkage of the watershed model results. Integration of watershed and reservoir model is an important in turbid water management because flow and turbidity in stream and high turbidity layer in reservoir could be predicted and analyzed. In this study, the integration of HSPF and CE-QUAL-W2 was applied for the turbid water management in Yongdam reservoir, where it is evaluated to be appliable and important.
The removal of protozoa in the coagulation process was evaluated under the different pH and turbidity using the jar test after the addition of polyaluminium chloride (PAC) as a coagulant. Two well-known protozoa of Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia were tested at the same time with turbidity, the critical water quality parameter of the water treatment process. Both protozoa were removed about 1log (and up to 2log) at the optimum injection of PAC. The source water turbidity and pH affected the removal of protozoa and turbidity. At neutral and alkaline pH, 1.3-1.7log removal of protozoa for low turbid water with 5NTU, and 1.6-2.3log removal for high turbid water with 30NTU were achieved. However, at acidic pH, maximum 0.8-1.0log and 1.1-1.2log were removed for low and high turbid water, respectively, at the optimum PAC injection of 15mg/L. The relation of protozoa and turbidity removals were expressed as the 1st order equation (significantly positive relation) in the most of the tested conditions. In addition, the relation of protozoan removals with residual turbidity were also expressed the 1st order equation (significantly negative relation), although the significance of the equations were reduced at acidic pH. Therefore, residual turbidity could be a good index of efficient protozoan removal in the coagulation process, probably except at the low pH condition.

In this study, the simulation of sediment deposition at Sangju weir reservoir, South Korea, was carried out using artificial neural networks. The ANNs have typically been used in water resources engineering problems for their robustness and high degree of accuracy. Three basic variables namely turbid water inflow, outflow, and water stage have been used as input variables. It was found that ANNs were able to establish valid relationship between input variables and target variable of sedimentation. The R value was 0.9806, 0.9091, and 0.8758 for training, validation, and testing phase respectively. Comparative analysis was also performed to find optimum structure of ANN for sediment deposition prediction. 3-14-1 network architecture using BR algorithm outperformed all other combinations. It was concluded that ANN possess mapping capabilities for complex, non-linear phenomenon of reservoir sedimentation.
Present study aims to study antioxidant enzyme activity due to turbidity change in various tissues of Carassius auratus. As for the changes of antioxidant enzyme activity in tissues of C. auratus pursuant to the raising period under 50, 100, and 150 NTU with turbid water levels, there was no great difference between 50 NTU and 100 NTU compared to a control (0 NTU), however, it demonstrated a relatively noticeable difference at 150 NTU high turbid water level. When considering the antioxidant capacity in tissues of C. auratus in terms of DPPH free radical scavenging activity, there was shown a high activity in gill and liver tissues, therefore, it is thought that there appears a non-enzymatic antioxidant reaction when C. auratus is reared under the condition of highly turbid water. As for the enzymatic antioxidant reaction of antioxidant enzyme activity got increased as turbid water level went higher in order of 50, 100, 150 NTU, and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione-s-transperase (GST), increased in all tissues except for an integument, up to 20th day when it was started to be reared, and they showed a gradual decrease as time passed by. However, since the activity of glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) is very low in almost all tissues, it is thought that the role of those enzymes would be quite ignorable in the course of antioxidant process.
Turbid storm runoff from intensive highland agriculture area has emerged as the major problem of water quality deterioration in the upstream region of the Han River. High slope of the upland combined with high rate of fertilization and intensive plowing causes high rate of soil erosion, and subsequently high suspended sediment and phosphorus content in the runoff water. The variations of water quality during rain spells were surveyed for two years (2005 and 2006) in the Jawoon Stream that is one of hot spots of intensive horticulture discharging turbid storm runoff. SS and TP showed large increase according to the increase of flow rate, whereas TN and BOD showed less fluctuations. Mean EMCs of SS and TP measured for nine rain events were as high as $207mgSS{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and $0.27mgP{\cdot}L^{-1}$, respectively. The export coefficient of SS and TP per area of cultivated field were calculated as $11,912kgSS{\cdot}yr^{-1}{\cdot}km^{-2}$ and $785kgP{\cdot}yr^{-1}{\cdot}km^{-2}$, repectively, which are significantly higher than reports of other area. It can be concluded that SS and TP in the runoffs were high enough to impose major threat to aquatic habitats, and the highland agriculture should be the main target of water quality management or habitat conservation in the study area.

This study applied SWAT model to analyze suspended sediment load that is influence on the high density turbid water in Donghyang and Cheoncheon basin, which are located in the upstream of Yongdam Dam. GIS data such as DEM, land cover map and soil map, and meteorological data were used as the input data of SWAT model. And the rating curve equation and Q-SS equation of Donghyang and Cheoncheon gauge station were applied as the measured values of them. As the result of flowout, the coefficient of determination ($R^2$) and the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient of efficiency (EI) of model calibration showed high as 0.87 and 0.87 at Donghyang gauge station, and the $R^2$ and EI of model validation were high as 0.95 at Cheoncheon gauge station. Also, as the result of suspended sediment load, the $R^2$ and EI of model calibration were high as 0.77 and 0.76 at Donghyang gauge station, and the $R^2$ and EI of model validation marked high as 0.867 and 0.80 at Cheoncheon gauge station. It is considered that the suspended sediment load of 2003 showed the highest due to rainfall amounts and rainfall intensity in using SWAT model. The results of suspended sediment modeled in this study can be applied to the decision-making support data for the evaluation of soil erosion possibility and turbid water potential in the management of reservoir.

We investigated the effect of the turbid water on the phytoplankton community in the 4 sites of Imha reservoir. The turbidity of water was proportional to the concentrations of $SiO_2$-Si. Therefore, as the turbidity of water grow, the concentration of $SiO_2$-Si increased. And the both the turbidity of water and the concentrations of $SiO_2$-Si were increased as the water run deep. The concentration of chlorophyll-a decreased as the depth of water increased. Seventy phytoplankton taxa were identified and the most abundant group was Chlorophyceae consisting of 32 taxa (46%), and Cyanophyceae and Bacillariophyceae consisted of 12 taxa (17%). And Euglenophyceae, Synulophyceae, Cryptophyceae and Dinophyceae consisted of 6 taxa (9%), 4 taxa (6%), 3 taxa (4%) and 1 taxon (1%), respectively in Imha reservoir. The concentrations of phytoplankton were increased according to the turbidity of water because of the high amount of organic nutrition which is presented with turbid water. And especially, the concentrations of nitrogen increased easily because of the weak binding to the soil particle. In conclusion, total nitrogen and $SiO_2$-Si flowed into the Imha reservoir with soil particle, and these inorganic nutritions affect the growth of algae.
As an example of many possible applications of OSMI data, we present a method to detect red tides. In Korean waters, red tides usually occur in the South Sea where the turbidity is usually high due to strong tidal mixing in the shallow sea. The conventional case 1 chlorophyll algorithm cannot be applied since it cannot distinguish chlorophyll from SS (suspended sediments). In October 1998, a red tide outbreak occurred off the coast of KunSan. We analyzed the SeaWiFS data of the outbreak. The standard SeaWiFS chlorophyll algorithm OC-2 was poor in identifying the red tides. However, comparison of spectra of normalized water-leaving radiance indicates that red tide pixels can be distinguished from sediment-laden pixels. Channel 443 and 555 were effective in showing the spectral characteristics. We suggest K490 algorithm as an example in summarizing the information of the spectra and thereby in distinguishing the red tide pixels. Further development is desirable.
