Enhancement of Transmittance Efficiency of TFT-LCD using High Transmittance Polarizer and Dielectric Anisotropy Liquid Crystal

  • This paper describes a fabrication method for high transmittance panel using newly designed polarizer and liquid crystal with a high dielectric anisotropy (${\Delta}{\varepsilon}$). To enhance the transmittance of the panel without contrast ratio reduction, new polarizer with high transmittance and high ${\Delta}{\varepsilon}$ liquid crystal were used. The transmittance of the liquid crystal display (LCD) panel employed by a new polarizer was increased by 6% over that of the panel with a conventional polarizer and liquid crystal in LCD industry.

Negative Liquid Crystal Cell with Parallel Patterned Electrodes for High Transmittance and Fast Switching

  • We propose a negative liquid crystal (n-LC) cell with parallel patterned electrodes for high transmittance and fast response. The proposed cell has higher transmittance and shorter response time than a conventional fringe-field switching cell using n-LCs, because the proposed cell does not have transmittance dips and does have a thinner LC layer.

  • In this paper we propose a novel electrode structure for high transmittance in the Patterned Vertical Alignment (PVA) LC cell. Normally, the transmittance of PVA LC cell is depended on the shape of the electrode and cell gap. We studied the area decreasing the transmittance through the electrode structure for wide viewing angle and proposed new electrode design to change LC director configuration in the area. We use the 'TechWiz LCD' for calculation of the director configuration and optical characteristics. We show the comparison of the calculated optical transmittance between the conventional PVA mode and the proposed PVA mode. From the results, we confirm that the optical transmittance of the proposed structure of the PVA cell becomes higher.

Two-dimensional LC analyses for increasing operation voltage in the FFS mode with fine slit pixel electrode

  • We studied for high transmittance panel technology in the FFS mode. We found that fine slit of pixel electrode makes increase of panel transmittance, and at the same time this structure has an issue which is increasing operation voltage (Vop). We analyzed the reason of high Vop in the FFS pixel with fine slit using two-dimensional LC analyses. Finally we suggest the solution which has high transmittance with suitable operating voltage.

  • PURPOSE. Translucency and colour stability are two most important aspects for an aesthetic dental restoration. Glass ceramic restorations are popular amongst clinicians because of their superior aesthetic properties. In the last decade, zirconia has generated tremendous interest due to its favorable mechanical and biological properties. However, zirconia lacks the translucency that lithium disilicate materials possess and therefore has limitations in its use, especially in esthetically demanding situations. There has been a great thrust in research towards developing translucent zirconia materials for dental restorations. The objective of the study was to evaluate and compare the transmittance of a translucent variant of zirconia to lithium disilicate. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two commercially available zirconia materials (conventional and high translucency) and 2 lithium disilicate materials (conventional and high translucency) with standardized dimensions were fabricated. Transmittance values were measured for all samples followed by a microstructural analysis using a finite element scanning electron microscope. One way analysis of variance combined with a Tukey-post hoc test was used to analyze the data obtained (P=.05). RESULTS. High translucency lithium disilicate showed highest transmittance of all materials studied, followed by conventional lithium disilicate, high translucency zirconia and conventional zirconia. The difference between all groups of materials was statistically significant. The transmittance of the different materials correlated to their microstructure analysis. CONCLUSION. Despite manufacturers' efforts to make zirconia significantly more translucent, the transmittance values of these materials still do not match conventional lithium disilicate. More research is required on zirconia towards making the material more translucent for its potential use as esthetic monolithic restoration.

조명용 광소자의 광 투과율 향상을 위한 패턴 형상 연구 (A Study on Pattern Shape to Improve the Light Transmittance of Optical Device)

  • The light transmittance of optical device is one of the important conditions to improve the product performance and it has researched through the various methods. One of these methods to improve the optical transmittance is to use a pattern on optical surface. The advantages of this method are to simplify the manufacturing process and to easy mass production. If a surface of glass has with the proper patterns, we can expect a great effect on optical transmittance. The purpose of this research is to derive a pattern to get high transmittance from a theoretical approach and to analyze the transmittance through the simulation. And then, we made a sample with a pattern and compared with the results from simulation and experiment.

실리카 콜로이드 나노입자를 이용한 반사 방지막의 제조 (High-Transmittance Films Coated from Silica Colloidal Nano-Particles)

  • 구형 실리카 나노 콜로이드 입자를 이용하여 반사방지막을 제조하였다. 실리카 콜로이드 현탁액을 모세관 힘을 이용하여 기울어진 두 장의 유리판 사이에 저장한 후 위의 유리를 이동시켜 반사 방지막을 코팅하였다. 상판 유리의 이동속도가 빨라질수록 막의 두께는 감소하였고, 막의 두께 변화에 따라 광 투과율이 변하였다. SEM으로 관찰된 실리카 나노 입자는 최밀충진에 가깝게 유리 기판에 부착되어 있었으며, 이로부터 고체 입자와 기공을 포함하는 막의 유효 굴절율을 구하였다. 최대의 광투과율을 나타내는 파장과 유효 굴절율로 부터 계산한 막의 두께는 SEM 사진 및 profiler로 구한 값과 잘 일치하였다. $94.7\%$의 최대 광투과율을 얻었으며, 양면으로 코팅한다면 $97.4\%$의 투과율 즉 $1.3\%$의 반사율을 얻을 수 있는 것으로 나타났다.

  • We have studied the transmittance of fringe-filed switching(FFS) using a liquid crystal with positive dielectric anisotropy. Generally, FFS having positive dielectric anisotropy has less transmittance than FFS using negative dielectric anisotropy. FFS mode transmittance depends on horizontal director deformation, however fringe filed is composed of vertical and horizontal field. Vertical field in the middle of electrode suppresses the transmittance of FFS mode, especially when we use positive one. So, it is important to prevent the LC director from the effect of vertical field. We changed the splay elastic constant and checked the transmittance. The transmittance of FFS having positive dielectric anisotropy was improved. Less tilted LC directors improve the transmittance of FFS using positive dielectric anisotropy. We can improve the transmittance by using LC which have high splay elastic constant when another LC properties are equal.

  • Films of Cr, Cu, and Al were deposited by the evaporation technique at the high vacuum level-high evaporation rate and the low vacuum level-low evaporation rate. We measured sheet resistance and light transmittance, and observed microstructure and diffraction pattern by TEM, and investigated oxygen content in thin film by AES. We discussed the relations among microstructure, sheet resistance, and light transmittance with AES data. We found that the films deposited at the high vacuum level-high evaporation rate have small oxygen content in thin film comparing to the films deposited at the low vacuum level-low vacuum level-low evaporation rate, and that the films having crystalline structure and larger grain size were formed in the case of the high vacuum level-high evaporation rate and they showed lower sheet resistance and lower light transmittance.

Transmittance and work function enhancement of RF magnetron sputtered ITO:Zr films for amorphous/crystalline silicon heterojunction solar cell

  • Recently, TCO films with low carrier concentration, high mobility and high work function are proposed beneficial as front electrode in HIT solar cell due to free-carrier absorption in NIR wavelength region and low Schottky barrier height in the front TCO/a-Si:H(p) interface. We report high transmittance and work function zirconium-doped indium tin oxide (ITO:Zr) films with various plasma (Ar/O2 and Ar) conditions. The role of (Ar/O2) plasma was to enhance the work function of the ITO:Zr films whereas the pure Ar plasma based ITO:Zr showed good electrical properties. The RF magnetron sputtered ITO:Zr films with low resistivity and high transmittance were employed as front electrode in HIT solar cells, yield the best performance of 18.15% with an open-circuit voltage of 710 eV and current density of 34.63 mA/cm2. The high work function ITO:Zr films can be used to modify the front barrier height of HIT solar cell.
