  • The critical strain energy release rate and the failure mechanisms of glass-carbon epoxy resin hybrid composites are investigated in the temperature range of the ambient temperature to 8$0^{\circ}C$. The direction of laminates and the volume fraction are [(+45, -45, 0, 0) sub(2) ] sub(s), 50%, respectively. The major failure mechanisms of these composites are studied using the scanning electron microscope for the fracture surface. Results are summarized as follows: 1) The critical strain energy release rate shows a maximum at ambient temperature and it tends to decrease as temperature goes up. 2) The critical strain energy release rate increases as the content of glass increases, and especially shows dramatic increase for the high glass fiber content specimens. 3) Major failure mechanisms can be classfied such as localized shear yielding, fiber-matrix debonding, matrix micro-cracking, and fiber pull-out and/or delamination.

  • Microstructures and mechanical properties of weldments were studied for EH36 TMCP higher-strength hull steel with electrogas welding jprocess. In case of a newly designed EH36 TMCP steel for large heat input welding process, the Microstructures of HAZ shows more narrow width of grain coarsed region than that of conventional EH36 TMCP weldments, the amount of acicular ferrite, which is beneficial to impact toughness, increased while the amount of grain-boundary ferrite decreased. Charpy V-notched impact tests show that a newly designed EH36 TMCP steel weldment satisfies all the requirement of specifications, especially at the fusion line +2mm where the conventional EH36 TMCP steel fails to exceed the requirement.

  • Silicon carbide powder was prepared from mixtures of Sangdong silica sand and carbon black by SHS (Self propagating High temperature Synthesis) method which utilizes magnesiothermic reduction of silica. In the powder preparation process, the reacted powder was leached by chloric acid to remove the magnesium oxide and was subsequently roasted to remove free carbon. The impurities were mostly eliminated by hot acid treatment. The resultant SiC powder showed the mean particle size of 0.22 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and the specific surface area of $66.55 m^2/g$. The SiC powder was mixed with 1 wt% of boron and of carbon to increase densification rate. The mixed powder was pressed and sintered pressurelessly at $2100^{\circ}C$ for 30 min in argon gas. The sintered body showed the hardness of $2550 kg{\cdot}f/mm^2$ and the fracture toughness, KIC of $3.47 MN/m^{3/2}$.

  • In this paper, failure probabilities of the OPR1000 reactor vessel under pressurized thermal shock (PTS) were estimated using the probabilistic fracture mechanics code, R-PIE. Input variables of initial crack distribution, crack size, copper contents, and upper shelf toughness were selected for the sensitivity analyses. A wide range of the input data were considered. Through-wall cracking frequencies determined by the product of the vessel failure probability and the corresponding occurrence frequency of the transient were also compared to the acceptance criterion. The results showed that transient history had the most significant impact on the vessel failure probability. Moreover, conservative assumptions resulted in extremely high through-wall cracking frequencies.

  • Dynamic shear moduli of isolated soy protein solutions upon heating were measured to monitor gelation. Onsets of gelation coincide with onset temperatures of denaturation in glycinin and ${\beta}$-conglycinin solutions, whereas in isolated soy proteins, onset of gelation was above denaturation temperature of ${\beta}$-conglycinin with storage modulus increasing in two steps. The first increase in storage modulus of isolated soy proteins occurred at about $78.5^{\circ}C$, while the second increase started at about $93^{\circ}C$. Gel properties of soy protein gels having different proportions of glycinin and ${\beta}$-conglycinin were measured by compression-decompression test. ${\beta}$-conglycinin was responsible for gel elasticity. Glycinin significantly increased hardness, toughness, and fracturability of gels at high heating temperature near $100^{\circ}C$. Results reveal texture of soy protein gels can be controlled by regulating ratio of glycinin to ${\beta}$-conglycinin and heating temperature.

  • Tensile and J-R tests were carried out to estimate the effects of dynamic strain aging(DSA) on SA106Gr.C piping steel. Tensile tests were performed under temperature range RT to $400^{\circ}C$ md strain rates from $1.39{\times}10^{-4}\;to\;6.95{\times}10^{-2}/s$. Fracture toughness was tested in the temperature range RT to $350^{\circ}C$ and load-line displacement rates 0.4 and 4mm/min. The effects of DSA on the tensile properties were clearly observed for phenomena such serrated flow, variation of ultimate and yield stress, and negative stram rate sensitivity. However, the magnitude of serration and strength increase by DSA was relatively small. this may be due to high ratio of Mn to C. In addition, crack initiation resistance, Ji and crack growth resistance, dJ/da were reduced in the range of $200-300^{\circ}C$, where DSA appeared as serrated flow and UTS hardening. The temperature corresponding to minimum fracture resistance was shifted to higher temperature with increasing loading rate.

  • The increase use of natural gas as an energy source has been continuous demand for ever-increasing strength in gas transmission pipeline materials in order to achieve safe and economic transportation of natural gas. In particular, linepipe material for sour gas service primarily needs to have crack resistant property. However, applications of sour linepipes are expanding toward deep water or cold region, which require higher toughness and/or heavier wall thickness as well as higher strength. To improve the crack resistance of linepipe steel in sour environment, low alloy steel are produced by controlled rolling subsequently followed by the accelerated cooling process. This paper summarizes the design concepts for controlling crack resistant property low alloy linepipe steels for sour gas service.

  • The effects of ageing treatment on the mechanical properties of two Cu-bearing HSLA(High Strength Low Alloy) steels, HSLA-A and HSLA-B ,were studied by means of SEM, TEM, tensile, charpy impact and hardness tests. These steels showed excellent combination in strength and toughness at an ageing of $650^{\circ}C$ by the precipitation of $\varepsilon$-Cu and low carbon alloying. The peak strength was achieved at an ageing of 50$0^{\circ}C$ in both steels, while the impact energy was very low in this peak strength. With ageing temperature above this temperature, strength was decreased whereas impact energy increased. A marked increase in hardness above 675$^{\circ}C$ was associated with the formation of “M-A constituents” which forms during cooling from austenite-ferrite two phase region. The impact transition temperature of HSLA-A and HSLA-B steels were -l$25^{\circ}C$ and -145$^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • The microstructures and properties of pure molybdenum wire and $Mo-La_2O_3$ alloy wire annealed at different temperatures are investigated systematically in this paper. It is shown that the recrystallization temperature, toughness and strength at room temperature of this wire was increased greatly by addition of $La_2O_3$. The room temperature embrittlement of this wire annealed at high temperature is improved remarkably.

  • In this study, electron microscopy, Fractography and $J_{IC}$ test have been used to investigate the fracture behaviour in the scope of aging temperature which 7075 Al-alloy can have high strength. Conclusions obtained on this study are as followed. 1) When the 7075 Al-alloy was aged for 24hrs at $120^{\circ}C$, it's mechanical properties was excellent but fracture toughness decrement resulted from intergranular fracture was emerged. 2) The state of aged for 24hrs at $100^{\circ}C$, had the highest fracture toughess. 3) We could infer that intergranular fracture occurred because preferrential precpitated precipitates in the grain boundary growed in the form of colinear along the grain boundary.
