  • The soot yield has been studied by a premixed propane-oxygen-inert gas combustion in a specially designed disk-type constant-volume combustion chamber to investigate the effects of pressure, temperature and turbulence on soot formation. Premixtures are simultaneously ignited by eight spark plugs located on the circumference of chamber at 45 degree intervals in order to observe the soot formation under high pressures. The eight flames converged compress the end gases to a high pressure. The laser schlieren and direct flame photographs for observation field with 10 mm in diameter are taken to examine into the behaviors of flame front and gas flow in laminar and turbulent combustion. The soot volume fraction in the chamber center during the final stage of combustion at the highest pressure is measured by the in situ laser extinction technique and simultaneously the corresponding burnt gas temperature by the two-color pyrometry method. The pressure and temperature during soot formation are changed by varying the initial charge pressure and the volume fraction of inert gas compositions, respectively. It is found that the soot yield increases with dropping temperature and rising pressure at constant equivalence ratio, and that the soot yield of turbulent combustion decreases in comparison with that of laminar combustion because the burnt gas temperature increases with the drop of heat loss.

  • The vapor pressure of the high melting point oxides, MgO, $Cr_2O_3$, and $MgCr_2O_4$ were measured over the temperature range 1300 to 175$0^{\circ}C$ under vacuum <$10^{-5}$ torr by the Langmuir and the Knudsen method. The Langmuir vapor pressure was increased with elevating temperature and with increasing porosity of the specimen. The difference between the vapor preseures measured by the Langmuir and the Knudsen method was decreased with elevating temperature and the Langmuir vapor pressure finally reached the Knudsen vapor pressure at the melting point when extrapolated. The vapor pressure of other important oxides with high melting points, i.e., $Al_2O_3$, $ThO_2$, $Yb_2O_3$ and $Y_2O_3$ were cited from the references. The Langmuir and the Knudsen vapor pressure of these oxides also showed the same results, i.e., they showed the same value at their melting points.

  • To evaluate the variation of spring stiffness in nuclear plant operating condition, load-displacement tests ($P-{\delta}$ test) were performed using two kinds of space grid springs in high temperature and high pressure water. With increasing temperature, stiffness of each spring gradually decreased except $100{\sim}150^{\circ}C$. It is apparently showed that spring with convex shape had a relatively high stability of spring stiffness at high temperature compared with I-shaped spring. It is suggested that the variation of spring stiffness with temperature and spring shape should be considered as an important variable in the design and analysis of the fuel assembly.

  • In the severe accident case like LOCA, Zircaloy(Zry) claddings are oxidized not only in high temperature but also in high pressures. It is a concem whether the safety of high bum up fuels can be maintained during severe accident. The effects of steam pressure on Zry-4 oxidation, and the effect of prc-existing oxide layer on the cladding in the high temperature-high pressure oxidation of Ziy-4 were investigated. The experimental temperature range was $700-900^{\circ}C$, and the pressures were between 0.1 and l5.0MPa. Partial pressure of steam tumed out to be the important one rather than total gas pressure. The higher the steam pressure was applied, the thicker the oxide became. nle effect of st,earn pressure on the oxidation of claddings with preexisting oxide was about 40-60% less effective than that of pickled cladding. Aocelerated oxidation in highpressure slean1 seems to be originated from the formation of microcracks produced during the transformation of tetragonal zirconia to monoclinic phase. Steam pressure seems to affect the stability of tetragonal phase.

  • The scale is removed from the strip by high pressure hydraulic descaling at the FSB (Finishing Scale Breaker). Recently, the spray height of nozzle has a trend to be shorter for the purpose of increasing the impact pressure by the high pressure water jet. Here, the nozzle intervals should be decided after considering the impact pressure and the temperature distribution on the strip. In other words, the minimum of impact pressure at the overlap of spray influences the surface grade of the strip due to scale and the overlap distance of the spray affects the temperature variation in the direction of the width of strip. In the present study, the impact pressure of the high pressure water jet is measured by the hydraulic descaling system and calculated with regard to the lead angle of 15$^{\circ}$ and the offset angle of 15$^{\circ}$, and then the temperature distribution and the temperature variation are calculated at the overlap distances of 0 mm, 10 mm, 20 mm, and 30 mm, respectively. The method of setting nozzle intervals is shown by utilizing these results.

  • This paper describes on the fabrication and characteristics of micro ceramic thin-film type pressure sensors based on Ta-N strain-gauges for high-temperature applications. The Ta-N thin-film strain-gauges are deposited onto thermally oxidized Si diaphragms by RF sputtering in an argon-nitrogen atmosphere($N_2$ gas ratio: 8 %, annealing condition: $900^{\circ}C$, 1 hr.), Patterned on a wheatstone bridge configuration, and use as pressure sensing elements with a high stability and a high gauge factor. The sensitivity is $1.097{\sim}1.21mV/V.kgf/cm^2$ in the temperature range of $25{\sim}200^{\circ}C$ and the maximum non-linearity is 0.43 %FS. The fabricated pressure sensor presents a lower TCR, non-linearity than existing Si piezoresistive pressure sensors. The fabricated micro ceramic thin-film type pressure sensor is expected to be usefully applied as pressure and load sensors that is operable under high-temperature environments.

  • One of the important problems in ac PDP in recent years is the misfiring of ac PDP at high ambient temperatures which consequently degrades the image quality of the ac PDP. This may be due to the change of working gas pressure and/or MgO surface characteristics at high ambient temperatures. This paper deals with the effect of working gas pressure on the misfiring of ac PDP at high ambient temperature. From this study, we found that the main cause of the misfiring at high ambient temperature is the increase in discharge firing voltage induced by increased working gas pressure

  • A numerical study of high pressure and temperature droplet vaporization and combustion is conducted by formulating one dimensional evaporation model and single-step chemical reaction in the mixture of hydrocarbon fuel and air. The ambient pressure ranged from atmospheric conditions to the supercritical conditions. In order to account for the real gas effect on fluid p-v-T properties in high pressure conditions, the modified Soave-Redlich-Kwong state equation is used in the evaluation of thermophysical properties. Some computational results are compared with Sato's experimental data for the validation of calculations in case of vaporization. The comparison between predictions and experiments showed quite a good agreement. Droplet surface temperature increased with increasing pressure. Ignition time increased with increasing initial droplet diameter. Temporal or spatial distribution of mass fraction, mass diffusivity, Lewis number, thermal conductivity, and specific heat were presented.

  • Thermal effect has great influence on wellbore stability in Dongfang 1-1 (DF 1-1) gas field, a reservoir with high-temperature and high-pressure. In order to analyze the wellbore stability in DF1-1 gas field, the variation of temperature field after drilling was analyzed. In addition, the effect of temperature changing on formation strength and the thermal expansion coefficients of formation were tested. On this basis, a wellbore stability model considering thermal effect was developed and the thermal effect on fracture pressure and collapse pressure was analyzed. One of the main challenges in this gas field is the decreasing temperature of the wellbore will reduce fracture pressure substantially, resulting in the drilling fluid leakage. If the drilling fluid density was reduced, kick or blowout may happen. Therefore, the key of safe drilling in DF1-1 gas field is to predict the fracture pressure accurately.
