  • Satrec Initiative successfully developed a high-resolution electro-optical camera system, EOS-D Ver.1.0. EOS-D Ver.1.0 is the main payload of DubaiSat-2 and Deimos-2, which are developed based on the SI-300 platform of Satrec Initiative. After the launch and early operation (LEOP) of DubaiSat-2 and Deimos-2, we performed refocusing for the telescope of EOS-D Ver.1.0 to compensate for the dimensional change of its metering structure by moisture out-gassing. Before and after refocusing, we conducted the performance evaluation of thermal control system(TCS) for EOS-D Ver.1.0 using the in-orbit telemetry data. The evaluation showed EOS-D Ver.1.0 was under well-controlled thermal environment, which demonstrates TCS was designed and developed to meet all requirements.

  • In this paper, we present design, implementation and test results of CTM (Chirp Transceiver Module) EM (Engineering Model) for C-Band SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) Payload. The CTM is designed to operate dual frequency scan method that simultaneously operate two frequencies in each 50MHz bandwidth to achieve 120Km swath with 10m resolution at about 500Km altitude. The CTM used radiation tolerant RTG4 FPGA for space environment, and implemented with the Parallel DDS (PDDS) method which uses a small memory capacity compared to the memory-map method. Test results show high purity chirp signal generation and excellent IRF performance from received chirp signal after direct digital conversion.

  • In the modern UAV systems, the role of radar payload has been increasing with its unique performance of day-and-night operation and see-through capability over hidden obstacles. Contrary to the satellite reconnaissance, UAV is expected to provide high resolution target detection and recognition capability while frequent flight missions would deliver enhanced SAR image and local information over the target area. STK(Satellite Tool Kit) is a professional space-analysis software widely used in all phases of a space system's life cycle. The simulation of STK is efficient and accurate relatively. In this paper, the author attempt to model the UAV operation and measure the expected SAR image quality. STK(Satellite Tool Kit) is employed to analyze UAV operation and produce SAR raw data. A SAR simulator is developed to produce high resolution SAR image for various ground targets.

  • High resolution synthetic aperture radar image could be sensitive to the various parameters of the payload, platform, and ground system. In this paper, a parameter based SAR simulator is presented for two-dimensional image formation and image quality analysis. Functional modules are implemented by Matalb code and GUI for the flexibility and expandability. Main function of this simulator includes the SAR input signal generation, range-doppler algorithm(RDA) based SAR image formation, and the SAR image quality analysis which is relevant to the SAR system design parameters. This simulator can effectively be used for the SAR image quality performance evaluation, which can be applicable to the airborne as well as spaceborne SAR system design and analysis.

  • COMS satellite is a multipurpose satellite in the geostationary orbit, which accommodates multiple payloads of the Ka band Satellite Communication Payload, Meteorological Imager, and Geostationary Ocean Color Imager into a single spacecraft platform. In this paper, Korea's first innovative geostationary Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) program is introduced which is fully funded by Korean Government. The satellite platform is based on the Astrium EUROSTAR 3000 communication satellite, but creatively combined with MARS Express satellite platform to accommodate three different payloads efficiently for COMS. The goals of the Ka band satellite communication mission are to in-orbit verify the performances of advanced communication technologies and to experiment wide-band multi-media communication service. The Meteorological Imager mission is to continuously extract meteorological products with high resolution and multi-spectral imager, to detect special weather such as storm, flood, yellow sand, and to extract data on long-term change of sea surface temperature and cloud. The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager mission aims at monitoring of marine environments around Korean peninsula, production of fishery information (Chlorophyll, etc.), and monitoring of long-term/short-term change of marine ecosystem. The system design difficulties are in the different kinds of payload mission requirements of communication and remote sensing purposes and how to combine them into one to meet the overall satellite requirements. In this paper, Ka band communication payload system is more highlighted.

  • The choice of nulling antenna type to be used for a given specification of user locations usually centers on whether to use a phased array antenna(PAA) or a multiple-beam antenna(MBA) for a satellite payload. This paper considers a MBA to analysis the nulling effect in the Korean peninsula jamming circumstance. First, the nulling performance and characteristics on the region of the earth coverage are confirmed with respect to the case of 7 beams. Then, optimum results are derived and compared to what can be accomplished with a fixed set of beams(the case of 10 and 19 beams are considered) for null steering to reject interference is investigated for a MBA.

  • Deramping technique has been widely used to acquire high resolution SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) images for the advantage of the data size and the processing time. However, unwanted spurious signals caused by SAR hardware can be leaked in the process of converting into a digital signal through the ADC(Analog-Digital Converter) and added in a echo signal. These tones make image quality degrade significantly. In order to solve this problem, the unwanted tones need to be detected by analysing the characteristic of the noise tone and then effectively removed from raw data. In this paper, we propose a method for efficiently removing noise tone on the raw data based on the characteristic of spurious signals.

  • KOMPSAT (KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite)-5 for the earth observation and scientific research is scheduled to launch in 2009. The second payload, AOPOD (Atmosphere Occultation and Precision Orbit Determination) system, consists of a space-borne dual frequency GPS receiver and a laser retro reflector. GPS radio occultations from AOPOD system can be used to generate profiles of refractivity, temperature, pressure and water vapor in the neutral atmosphere with a high vertical resolution. Also the radio occultation in the ionosphere provides an inexpensive tool of vertical electron density profile. Currently, many LEO missions with GPS radio occultation receivers are on orbit and more GPS occultation missions are planed to launch in the near future. In this paper, we simulated radio occultation measurements from KOMPSAT-5 and retrieved atmospheric profiles using the simulated data.

  • The purpose of Electro-Optical Camera (EOC), the primary payload of KOMPSAT-1, is to collect high resolution visible imagery of the Earth including Korean Peninsula. EOC images will be distributed to the public or many user groups including government, public corporations, academic or research institutes. KARI will offer the online service to the users through internet. Some application, e.g., generation of Digital Elevation Model (DEM), needs a secondary data such as satellite ephemeris data, attitude data to process the EOC imagery. EOC imagery with these ancillary information will be distributed in a file of Hierarchical Data Format (HDF) file formal. HDF is a physical file format that allows storage of many different types of scientific data including images, multidimensional data arrays, record oriented data, and point data. By the lack of public domain softwares supporting HDF file format, many public users may not access EOC data without difficulty. The purpose of this research is to develop a browsing system of EOC data for the general users not only for scientists who are the main users of HDF. The system is PC-based and huts user-friendly interface.

  • Linear array imaging sensors are widely used in remote sensing satellites. The final products of an imaging sensor can only be used when they are geometrically, radiometrically, and spectrally calibrated. Therefore, at the first stages of sensor design, a detailed calibration procedure must be carefully planned based on the accuracy requirements. In this paper, focusing on inherent optical distortion, a step-by-step procedure for laboratory geometric calibration of a typical push-broom satellite imaging sensor is simulated. The basis of this work is the simulation of a laboratory procedure in which a linear imager mounted on a rotary table captures images of a pin-hole pattern at different angles. By these images and their corresponding pinhole approximation, the correction function is extracted and applied to the raw images to give the corrected ones. The simulation results illustrate that using this approach, the nonlinear effects of distortion can be minimized and therefore the accuracy of the geometric position of this method on the image screen can be improved to better than the order of sub-pixel. On the other hand, the analyses can be used to proper laboratory facility selection based on the imaging sensor specifications and the accuracy.
