  • Refrigeration and air-conditioning compressors used in home appliances, including refrigerators and air conditioners, are typically hermetic-type reciprocating compressors. Because the shell is sealed by welding, it should be designed to have a semi-permanent life. The energy consumption of a hermetic-type reciprocating compressor is low, but because it operates continuously to maintain a constant temperature inside the refrigerator, it has a certain base load. In this type of compressor, the driving motor operates at a high speed (about 3,000 - 3,600 rpm), which causes valve damage, friction, wear, and high-frequency noise. Many studies have been conducted to solve these problems. To enhance the reliability and efficiency of the reciprocating compressor, the design conditions and operating environment of journal bearings should be considered. Dynamic behavior analysis should be carried out in terms of the discharge pressure. The results showed that the load (discharge pressure) increases in the forward lookup zone and decreases in the backward lookup zone. When the revolution speed is increased, the maximum load decreases in the region where the maximum load operates.

  • A centrifugal compressor of 50HP for reverse brayton cryocooler using neon as a coolent has been developed. It has relatively low total-to-total pressure ratio but mass flow rate is very small and the voting gas, neon, has greater specific heat ratio than air. It was essential to have very high rotational speed of 100,000 RPM. The efficiency of compressor has great effects on overall system and the COP of cryocooler. To meet the design requirement of the compressor efficiency and to minimized the required rotational speed, highly efficiency impeller having low specific speed was designed. To maintain the overall system efficient high, gas bearing of bump type and high speed permanent magnet synchronus motor was developed and adopted. In this paper, design and performance prediction results of the compressor impeller is presented.

  • The Reciprocating compressor are widely used in the refrigeration field for its simplicity in principle and high efficiency. In this work, we developed a mathematical model of a reciprocating compressor. The suction and discharge valves are modeled by the spring-mass-damper systems. The working fluid flow is derived from unsteady Bernoulli's equation. With the design parameters, the valve motions and pressure fluctuations are studied numerically and experimentally.

  • Time averaged pressure distributions in a high-speed centrifugal compressor channel diffuser at design and off-design flow rates are investigated. Pressure distributions from the impeller exit to the channel diffuser exit are measured for various flow rates from choke to near surge condition, and the effects of operating condition are discussed. The strong non-uniformity in the pressure distribution is obtained over the vaneless space and semi-vaneless space caused by the impeller-diffuser interaction. As the flow rate increases, flow separation near the throat, due to large incidence angle at the vane leading edge, increases aerodynamic blockage and reduces the aerodynamic flow area downstream. Thus the minimum pressure location occurs downstream of the geometric throat, and it is named as the aerodynamic throat. And at choke condition, normal shock occurs downstream of this aerodynamic throat. The variation in the location of the aerodynamic throat is discussed.

  • To study the applicability of a scroll type compressor to small capacity refrigerators, a R600a scroll compressor with algebraic scroll wrap has been designed. Its size and performance have been compared to a reciprocating type of the same displacement volume. By employing scroll wrap based on algebraic curve, high compression ratio can be accomplished without increasing the wrap angle much so that compact scroll may be obtained. Compared to a reciprocating one, the designed scroll compressor has diameter and height reduced by about 50% and 80%, respectively. By numerical simulation, it has been estimated that the scroll compressor provides 38.6% more cooling capacity than reciprocating type with 8.9% more power consumption, resulting in 27.3% increase in COP for ASHRAE low back pressure condition. With increasing the operating pressure ratio from 9.5 to 15.3, the overall compressor efficiency of the scroll compressor decreases from 72.6% to 65.2%, while that of the reciprocating compressor increases from 55.7% to 59.8%.

  • A practical method of surge simulation in a system of a high-pressure-ratio multistage axial flow compressor and ducts, named SRGTRAN, is described about the principal procedures and the details. The code is constructed on the basis of one-dimensional stage-by-stage modeling and application of fundamental equations of mass, momentum, and energy. An example of analytical result on surge behaviors is included as an experimental verification. It will enable to examine the transient flow phenomena caused by possible compressor surges and their influences on the system components in plant systems including high-pressure-ratio axial compressors or gas turbines.

  • Recently, KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute, Korea) and CIAM(Central Institute of Aviation Motors, Russia) have made an effort in developing a centrifugal compressor for a small gas turbine engine as part of a collaboration program. This compressor has been designed as a sub-component for an axial-centrifugal compression system for a small turbo-shaft engine aiming adiabatic efficiency higher than 0.81. The geometrical design requirement imposes restrictions to have high inlet hub-to-tip ratio and inlet swirl flow. In this study, the compressor has been designed using the generalized experimental data established from those compressors having pressure ratio of 3.7 to 5. From this generalized empirical correlation, desirable values of design parameters could be obtained. Subsequently, quasi-3D and 3D viscous flow analyses have been performed to ensure the adopted methodology. It is expected that the centrifugal compressor provides total pressure ratio of 4.89, corrected mass flow-rate of 1.64kg/sec, and adiabatic efficiency of 0.815 with inlet hub-to-tip ratio of 0.641. These relatively high total pressure ratio and inlet hub-to-tip ratio are the main distinctive features in this design. Besides, one of the main features of this centrifugal compressor is the adoption of a double-row bladed diffuser to effectively decelerate the transonic flow leaving the impeller. The compressor has been manufactured and will be tested in the near future.

  • Operation conditions of a reheat cycle gas turbine for a combined cycle power plant was analyzed. Based on measured performance parameters of the gas turbine, a performance analysis program predicted component characteristic parameters such as compressor air flow, compressor efficiency, efficiencies of both the high and low pressure turbines, and coolant flows. The predicted air flow and its variation with the inlet guide vane setting were sufficiently accurate. The compressor running characteristic in terms of the relations between air flow, pressure ratio and efficiency was presented. The variations of the efficiencies of both the high and low pressure turbines were also presented. Almost constant flow functions of both turbines were predicted. The current methodology and obtained data can be utilized for performance diagnosis.

  • In this study, the instability of a centrifugal compressor with vaned diffuser was investigated. During unstable operation of the test compressor, pressure fluctuations at different diffuser radius ratios were measured by using high frequency pressure transducers. Two different types of stall, mild and deep stalls, were observed alternately and irregularly at some flow rates where the compressor performance was steeply deteriorated. In this transient zone, the size of rotating stall cell was estimated through the wavelet transform analysis. It was about 45 percents of rotor circumferential space at 300 rpm and not dependent on flow rate.
