Although rock itself has high strength or low permeability, engineering properties of rock masses are significantly influenced by discontinuities such as cracks and joints. Considered with possibility of groundwater flow in massive rock mass of deep subsurface, the connectivity of micro cracks should be analyzed as a conduit of ground-water flow. The objective of this study is to estimate permeability characteristics of granite dependent on damage process with application of joint distribution analysis and modeling of permeability analysis in rock masses. In case of average permeability coefficients, the modeling results based on micro cracks data are well matched with the results from permeability tests. Based on the visualization result of three dimensional model, the average permeability coefficients through the discharge plane have a positive relationship with the number of microcrack induced by rock damage.

The equation of the step-drawdown test "$s_w=BQ+CQ^p$" written by Rorabaugh (1953) is suitable for drawdown increased non-linearly in the fractured rocks. It was found that value of root mean square error (RMSE) between observed and calculated drawdowns was very low. The calculated $C$ (well head loss coefficient) and $P$ (well head loss exponent) value of well head losses ($CQ^p$) ranged $3.689{\times}10^{-19}{\sim}5.825{\times}10^{-7}$ and 3.459~8.290, respectively. It appeared that the deeper depth in pumping well the larger drawdowns due to pumping rate increase. The well head loss in the fractured rocks, unlike that in porous media, is affected by properties of fractures (fractures of aperture, spacing, and connection) around pumping well. The $C$ and $P$ value in the well head loss is very important to interpret turbulence interval and properties of high or low permeability of fractured rock. As a result, regression analysis of $C$ and $P$ value in the well head losses identified the relationship of turbulence interval and hydraulic properties. The relationship between $C$ and $P$ value turned out very useful to interpret hydraulic properties of the fractured rocks.

The floc characteristics of base paper stock for coating by the retention aid system consisting of polyacrylamide (high molecular weight low charge density, HMLC) and PEI without and with anionic inorganic oxide (IO) were investigated under various shear conditions of MDDA (modified dynamic drainage analyzer). The floc size was increased with cationic electrolytes dosage whatever inorganic oxide is applied or not. The effect of inorganic oxide on the floc size showed the different result between PAM and PEI. The smaller floc was obtained by PAM without inorganic oxide, but larger floc was obtained by PAM with inorganic oxide. However, the effect of shear force was not observed. Floc formation index was decreased by the addition of cationic electrolytes with or without inorganic oxide. Floc formation index had better correlation format formation index than floc size. The relationships between wet web permeability and mat air permeability showed the significant linear correlation ($R^2$=0.97~0.98) for HML PAM and PEI. Floc formation index gave more useful information than the retention measurement when the performance of retention aids is evaluated at the laboratory before applying at the paper mill.
The effect of hepatic injury produced by CCL, was studied on rats receiving a low protein-high carbohydrate (7% casein), standard protein (20% casein) and a high protein diet (30% casein). The rats fed low protein diet are resistant to CCl$_4$ in its effects on the liver as judged by histology, serum enzymes(guanase, ALT) and the content of hepatic protein. On the other hand, the pretreatment of hydrocortisone before injection of CCl$_4$ to the rats fed a standard diet, slightly decreased both serum ALT and guanase activities. In the pretreatment of actinomycin D, the liver and serum guanase activities were significantly decreased. It indicates that the cause of increasing serum guanase is based on the alteration of membrane permeability and the result of accelerated enzyme synthesis in liver cells of CCl$_4$ intoxicated rats.

The objective of the current study was to investigate the effects of stocking density (SD) and dietary supplementation of vitamin C on growth performance, meat quality, intestinal permeability, and stress indicators in broiler chickens. The study was conducted using a completely randomized design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement consisting of 2 different SD and 2 supplemental levels of dietary vitamin C. A total of 1,368 Ross 308 broiler chickens of 21 days of age with similar body weights (BW) were randomly allotted to 1 of 4 treatments with 6 replicates each. Different numbers of birds per identical floor pen (2.0 m × 2.4 m) were used to create 2 different SD levels of low SD (9 birds/m2) and high SD (18 birds/m2). The basal diet was formulated with no supplemental vitamin C to meet or exceed nutrient recommendations of the Ross 308 manual. The other diet was prepared by supplementing 200 mg/kg vitamin C in the basal diet. The study lasted for 14 days. At the end of the study, 3 male birds per replicate were selected to analyze meat quality, intestinal permeability, and stress indicators such as blood heterophil:lymphocyte (H:L) and feather corticosterone (CORT) concentrations. Results indicated that there were no interactions between different SD and dietary supplementation of vitamin C for all measurements. For the main effects of SD, birds raised at high SD had less (p < 0.01) BW, BW gain, and feed intake with increasing stress responses including greater blood H:L and feather CORT concentrations (p < 0.01) than those raised at low SD. Transepithelial electrical resistance in the jejunal mucosa was decreased (p < 0.05) at high SD, indicating an increase in intestinal permeability. However, the main effects of dietary supplementation of 200 mg/kg vitamin C were insignificant for all measurements. In conclusion, high SD of broiler chickens impairs growth performance and intestinal barrier function with increasing stress responses. However, dietary supplementation of vitamin C may have little beneficial effects on broiler chickens raised at the high SD condition used in the present study.
Edible biopolymer films were developed from hijiki ($Hizikia$$fusiforme$), using a high-pressure homogenization (HPH). Effects of pressure and pass number of HPH on color, tensile, moisture barrier properties, flavor profiles, and microstructure of hijiki films were investigated. A hydrocolloid of hijiki was processed by HPH at 69, 103, or 152 MPa with 1, 2, or 3 passes. A hijiki-base film was formed by drying a film-forming solution which was prepared by mixing of the HPH-processed suspension with glycerol and Polysorbate 20. Tensile strength and elastic modulus increased with increasing HPH pressure. Uniformity of the films increased as the pressure of HPH with 1 pass increased and the number of pass increased at 152 MPa. Water vapor permeability ($2.1-3.3g{\cdot}mm/kPa{\cdot}h{\cdot}m^2$) and water solubility (0.4-1.0%), which are relatively low compared to those of many other edible films, show the potential that hijiki-base films are applied to the range of low to intermediate moisture food as wrapping or coating.

Shielding methods on ELF(Extremely Low Frequency) magnetic fields may include the use of induced currents, modification of magnetic field flux patterns using high permeability and/or high conductivity materials, and others. The magnetic shielding properties of enclosures can be utilized to reduce the magnetic field of current carrying conductors. In this paper, to get a more practical understanding of shielding phenomena, we have investigated the magnetic field reduction by means of 3 dimensional numerical analysis and experiments. We found copper could reduce flux density more then permalloy in both cases of box shield and cylindrical shield. Iron under l0$\mu$T of 1 phase could reduce flux density about $20\%$ more than silicon steel, but both of them under 50$\mu$T has a similar reduction rate of $10\%$. The 3 phase horizontal model gave the highest reduction rate and the 1mm thickness iron under 10$\mu$T of 3 phase lines did lowest.

Subsurface biobarrier technology has potential applications to contain contaminated groundwater and/or to degrade toxic pollutants in groundwater. Most biobarrier studies were conducted under aerobic condition, however there were several obstacles to make aerobic condition. Thus, In this study, we examined biobarrier formation under denitrifying condition by using nitrate as an electron acceptor. Experiments were performed with a sand column inoculated with activated sludge from the nearby WWTP. The substrate medium was pumped to the sand column in an upflow mode. During the low substrate loading rate period, the extent of reduction rate in hydraulic conductivity was found similar throughout the column, and permeability became relatively stable after couple of days. However, during the high substrate loading rate period, the column demonstrated a gradient of permeability reduction, with the greatest reduction in sections nearest the column inlet. Rapid growth of microorganisms near the column inlet resulted in the unbalanced reduction of hydraulic conductivity throughout the sand column. As a result, at this denitrifying condition the thickness of biobarrier could be controlled by adjusting the medium conditions of microbial growth.

The concrete with continuous voids (No Fine Concrete ; NFC) is the new planting material which may be used for stabilizing the sandy slope of river or road sides. The components of NFC are mainly coarse aggregate and low alkali cement paste, so to speak fine aggregate is not used. This report shows the fundamental properties of NFC, such as continous void ratio, compressive strength, permeability. As experimental results we can get the good quality of NFC, that is about 28% continuous void ratio, about 120kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ compressive strength and high flowable permeability. And also planting grass and garden portulaca on the concrete with continuous voids is resulted in success.

Metallic porous materials have many interesting combinations of physical and geometrical properties with very low specific weight or high gas permeability. In this study, highly porous Cu foam is successfully fabricated by a slurry coating process. The Cu foam is fabricated specifically by changing the coating amount and the type of polyurethane foam used as a template. The processing parameters and pore characteristics are observed to identify the key parameters of the slurry coating process and the optimized morphological properties of the Cu foam. The pore characteristics of Cu foam are investigated by scanning electron micrographs and micro-CT analyzer, and air permeability of the Cu foam is measured by capillary flow porometer. We confirmed that the characteristics of Cu foam can be easily controlled in the slurry coating process by changing the microstructure, porosity, pore size, strut thickness, and the cell size. It can be considered that the fabricated Cu foams show tremendous promise for industrial application.
