  • We report on a strong violet luminescence emitted from the ZnO:Al films grown on glass substrate by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering. The growth of high-quality thin films and their optical properties are controlled by adjusting the mixture ratio of Ar and $O_2$, which is used as the sputtering gas. The crystallinity of the films is improved as the oxygen flow ratio is decreased, as evidenced in both x-ray diffractometer and atomic force microscope measurements. As for the violet luminescence measured by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, the peak energy and intensity of the PL signal are decreased with increasing the oxygen flow ratio. The peak energy of the violet PL spectrum for the thin film with an oxygen flow ratio of 50 % is almost constant, regardless of the increase of laser Power and temperature. These results indicate that the violet PL signal is probably due to defects related to interstitial Zn atoms.

  • Some characteristics of nitrogen-water slug flow were optically measured, in vertical acrylic tubes of 2, 5 and 8 mm diameter. Bubble velocity, bubble and unit cell lengths were measured, by analyzing the light intensity signals from two sets of dot laser-infrared sensor modules mounted along the transparent tubes. Optical images of the bubbles were also taken and analyzed, to measure bubble shapes and liquid film thickness. It was found that the measured bubble velocities were in good agreement with the empirical models in the literature, except for those measured under high superficial velocity condition in the 2 mm tube. Bubble length was found to be the longest in the 2 mm tube, being 4 to 5 times those of the other tubes. Liquid film was found to have developed early in the 2 mm tube, which made the blunt shape of the bubble head. Liquid film thickness in the 8 mm tube was measured at almost twice those of the other tubes.

  • In this paper, we quantitatively analyze the effect of lens aberration on the degradation of beam-coupling efficiency of a tiled coherent-beam combining system. The Zernike polynomial is used to quantify the aberration of the lens, and Fresnel diffraction is applied to numerically simulate the change in the peak light intensity when combined at a distance. The results of this paper will be useful for quantitative prediction of the beam-combining efficiency that is degraded by aberration of the lens, and it is expected to be helpful for the optimal design of a practical tiled coherent beam-combining system.

  • The turbulent flow in reactor pressure vessel (RPV) of pressurized water reactor (PWR) is important for the flow rate distribution at core inlet. Thus, it is vital to study the turbulent flow phenomena in RPV. However, the complicated fluid channel consisted of inner structures of RPV will block or refract the laser sheet of particle image velocimetry (PIV). In this work, the matched index of refraction (MIR) of sodium iodide (NaI) solution and acrylic was applied to support optical path for flow field measurements by PIV in the 1/10th scaled-down RPV model. The experimental results show detailed velocity field at different locations inside the scaled-down RPV model. Some interesting phenomena are obtained, including the non-negligible counterflow at the corner of nozzle edge, the high downward flowing stream in downcomer, large vortices above vortex suppression plate in lower plenum. And the intensity of counterflow and the strength of vortices increase as inlet flow rate increasing. Finally, the case of asymmetry flow was also studied. The turbulent flow has different pattern compared with the case of symmetrical inlet flow rate, which may affect the uniformity of flow distribution at the core inlet.

  • The study examined what effects 100kHz PWM LED light irradiation causes to bone marrow cells of SD-Rat when LED characterized cheap and safe is used onto the light therapy by replacing the low 1evel laser. We developed the equipment palpating cell proliferation using a high brightness LED. This equipment was fabricated using a micro-controller and a high brightness LED, and designed to enable us to control light irradiation time, intensity, frequency and so on. Especially, to control the light irradiation frequency, FPGA was used, and to control the change of output value, TLC5941 was used. Consequent1y, the current value could be controlled by the change of 1eve1 in Continue Wave(CW) and Pulse Width Modulation(PWM), and the output of a high brightness LED could be controlled stage by stage. MTT assay method was chosen to verify the cell increase of two groups and the effect of irradiation on cell proliferation was examined by measuring 590nm transmittance of ELISA reader. As a result, the cell increase of Rat bone marrow cells was verified in 100kHz PWM LED light irradiation group as compared to non-irradiation group.

  • Fiber-optic biosensor for the detection of organophosphorus compounds in a contaminated water was developed, which was the component of pesticides and agricultural agent. The detection principle of designed sensor was the pH variance induced by a reaction of acetylcholinesterase enzyme inhibited by organophosphorus compounds. The pH variance was detected by the optical system to measure the organophosphorus compounds. Litmus was selected as the pH-sensitive dye suitable to the enzyme reaction and a light source to be detected by the optical system. The enzyme entrapped in Ca-alginate gel was immobilized at the inner wall to maintain the high activity of enzyme and to be reused for a long period. The optical fiber was used to miniaturize and control remotely the sensor system. The He-Ne laser with 632 nm was selected as the light source to prevent light intensity fluctuation by the product. Cheap plastic optical fibers were used as the transmission part of the light and the phototransistor was used as the reception part of light based on the wavelength of He-Ne laser. The proposed fiber-optic biosensor has the linear analytical range of 0 ppm-1.5 ppm with response time of 5 minutes.

  • We have studied a tiled-aperture coherent-beam-combining system based on constructive interference, as a way to overcome the power limitation of a single laser. A 1-watt-level, 3-channel coherent fiber laser and a 3-channel fiber array of triangular tiling with tip-tilt function were developed. A monitoring system, phase controller, and 3-channel phase modulator formed a closed-loop control system, and the SPGD algorithm was applied. Eventually, phase-locking with a rate of 5-67 kHz and peak-intensity efficiency comparable to the ideal case of 53.3% was successfully realized. We were able to develop the essential elements for a tiled-aperture coherent-beam-combining system that had the potential for highest output power without any beam-combining components, and a multichannel coherent-beam-combining system with higher output power and high speed is anticipated in the future.

  • The wakes of a cylindrical body have been investigated. The cylindrical body was attached with a thin film. The film is made of silicon with configurations of 50mm(W) ${\times}$ 150mm(L) ${\times}$ 0.3mm(T). The cylinder wakes have been measured with PIV experiments under the conditions with and without the thin film. The diameter of the installed cylinder body is 30mm and the Reynolds numbers are 2730, 6160 and 9750 with the diameter. The measurement system consists of an Ar-ion laser(6W), a high speed camera(1024 ${\times}$ 992 pixel, 500fps) and a host computer. FFT analyses have been carried out using the velocity vectors obtained by PIV measurements at the point X/D=1.52 and Z/D=0.52. For understanding the three-dimensional flow structures, a new Volumetric PTV(particle tracking velocimetry) has been constructed, in which the same four high-resolution cameras have been used. It has been verified that the flexible film suppresses or damps the vortices separated from the cylinder body, which makes the cylinder's wakes stable. With increase of Re numbers the intensity of the dominant frequency of the wakes become smaller.

  • GaN-based nitride semiconductors have attracted considerable attention in high-brightness light-emitting-diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs) covering from green to ultraviolet spectral range. LED and LD heterostructures are usually grown on (0001)-$Al_2O_3$. The large lattice mismatch between $Al_2O_3$ substrates and the GaN layers leads to a high density of defects(dislocations and stacking faults). Moreover, Ga and N atoms are arranged along the polar [0001] crystallographic direction, which leads to spontaneous polarization. In addition, in the InGaN/GaN MQWs heterostructures, stress applied along the same axis can also give rise to piezoelectric polarization. The total polarization, which is the sum of spontaneous and piezoelectric polarizations, is aligned along the [0001] direction of the wurtzite heterostructures. The change in the total polarization across the heterolayers results in high interface charge densities and spatial separation of the electron and hole wave functions, redshifting the photoluminescence peak and decreasing the peak intensity. The effect of polarization charges in the GaN-based heterostructures can be eliminated by growing along the non-polar [$11\bar{2}0$] (a-axis) or [$1\bar{1}00$] (m-axis) orientation instead of thecommonly used polar [0001] (c-axis). For non-polar GaN growth on non-polar substrates, the GaN films have high density of planar defects (basal stacking fault BSFs, prismatic stacking fault PSFs), because the SFs are formed on the basal plane (c-plane) due to their low formation energy. A significant reduction in defect density was recently achieved by applying blocking layer such as SiN, AlN, and AlGaN in non-polar GaN. In this work, we were performed systematic studies of the defects in the nonpolar GaN by conventional and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy.

  • The light and energy-efficiency of classical liquid crystal displays is notoriously poor due to the use of absorption-based linear polarisers and colour filters. For instance, the light efficiency of PVAL polarisers is typically between 40 and 45 % and the colour filters have a typical efficiency below 35 % which results in a total light and energy-efficiency of the display below 10 %. In the past, a variety of polarizers were developed with an enhanced efficiency in generating linearly polarized light. Typically, these polarizers are based on the polarisationselective reflection, scattering or refraction of light i.e. one polarisation direction of light is directly transmitted to the LCD/viewer and the other polarization direction of light is depolarised and recycled which results in a typical efficiency for generating linearly polarized light of 70-85 %. Also, special colour filters have been proposed based on chiral-nematic reactive mesogens which increase the efficiency of generating colour. Despite the enormous progress in this field, a need persists for improved methods for generating polarized light and colour based on low cost optical components with a high efficiency. Here, the use of holographic phase gratings is reported for the generation of polarized light and colour. The phase grating are recorded in a photopolymer which is coated onto a backor frontlight for LCDs. Typically the recording is performed in the transmisson mode or in the waveguiding mode and slanted phase gratings are generated with their refractive index modulation at an angle between 20o and 45o with the normal of the substrate. It is shown that phase gratings with a high refractive index modulation and a high efficiency can be generated by a proper selection of the photopolymer and illumination conditions. These phase gratings coupleout linearly polarized light with a high contrast (> 100) and the light is directed directly to the LCD/viewer without the need for redirection foils. Dependent on the type of phase grating, the different colours are coupled-out at a slightly different angle which potentially increases the efficiency of classical colour filters. Moreover, the phase gratings are completely transparent in direct view which opens the possibility to use them in frontlights for LCDs. Holographic polarization gratings posses a periodic pattern in the polarization state of light (and not in the intensity of light). A periodic pattern in the polarization direction of linearly polarized light is obtained upon interference of two circularly polarized laser beams. In the second part of the lecture, it is shown that these periodic polarization patterns can be recorded in a linear photo-polymerizable polymer (LPP) and that such an alignment layer induces a period rotation in the director of (reactive and non-reactive) liquid crystals. By a proper design, optical components can be produced with only first order diffraction and with a very high efficiency (>0.98). It is shown that these diffraction gratings are potentially useful in projection displays with a high brightness and energy efficiency
