Dielectric materials with inherently high power densities and fast discharge rates are particularly suitable for pulsed power capacitors. The ongoing multifaceted efforts on developing these capacitors are focused on improving their energy density and storage efficiency, as well as ensuring their reliable operation over long periods, including under harsh environments. This review article summarizes the studies that have been conducted to date on the development of high-performance dielectric ceramics for employment in pulsed power capacitors. The energy storage characteristics of various lead-based and lead-free ceramics belonging to linear and nonlinear dielectrics are discussed. Various strategies such as mechanical confinement, self-confinement, core-shell structuring, glass incorporation, chemical modifications, and special sintering routes have been adopted to tailor the electrical properties and energy storage performances of dielectric ceramics. In addition, this review article highlights the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of pulsed power capacitors.

Zn-ion supercapacitors (ZICs) show high energy densities with long cycling life for use in electronic devices. Porous Zn electrodes as anodes for ZICs are fabricated by chemical etching process using optimized conditions. The structures, morphologies, chemical bonding states, porous structure, and electrochemical behavior are examined. The optimized porous Zn electrode shows a root mean square of roughness of 173 nm and high surface area of $153{\mu}m^2$. As a result, ZIC using the optimized porous Zn electrode presents excellent electrochemical performance with high specific capacitance of $399F\;g^{-1}$ at current density of $0.5A\;g^{-1}$, high-rate performance ($79F\;g^{-1}$ at a current density of $10.0A\;g^{-1}$), and outstanding cycling stability (99 % after 1,500 cycles). The development of energy storage performance using synergistic effects of high roughness and high surface area is due to increased electroactive sites by surface functionalization of Zn electrode. Thus, our strategy will lead to a rational design and contribute to next-generation supercapacitors in the near future.
In this study, the effects of the compaction method for (Mg+2B) powders on the apparent density and superconducting properties of $MgB_2$ bulk superconductor were investigated. The raw powders used in this study were nano-sized boron (B) and spherical magnesium (Mg). A batch of a powder mixture of (Mg+2B) was put in a steel mold and uniaxially pressed at 1 ton or 3 tons into pellets. Another batch of the powder mixture was uniaxially pressed at 1 ton and then pressed isostatically at $1800kg/cm^2$ in the water chamber. All pellets were heat-treated at $650^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in flowing argon gas for the formation of $MgB_2$. The apparent density of powder compacts pressed at 3 ton was higher than that at 1 ton. The cold isostatic pressing (CIP) in a water chamber allowed further increase of the apparent density of powder compacts, which influenced the pellet density of the final products ($MgB_2$). The compaction methods (uniaxial pressing and CIP) did not affect the formation of $MgB_2$ and superconducting critical temperature ($T_c$) of $MgB_2$, but affected the critical current density ($J_c$) of $MgB_2$ significantly. The sample with the high apparent density showed high $J_c$ at 5 K and 20 K at applied magnetic fields (0-5 T).
In this study, we investigated the relationship between the adsorption property of Methyl violet or Tartrazine dye onto silica sol surface and surface charge density of the sol. The adsorption ratio of Methyl violet dye on silica sol decreased to 74% and 92% for the 68nm and 94nm silica sol, respectively, at dye concentration of $175{\mu}g/m^2$. However, the adsorption ratio of Tartrazine dye on 68nm and 94nm silica sol was about 0% for both of them. The surface charge density is $-0.40C/m^2$, $-0.26C/m^2$ for 68nm and 94nm silica sol, respectively. The amount of Methyl violet dye adsorbed on silica sol increased with an increase of surface charge density of particle at the same concentration of the dye. The adsorbed amount of the silica having high surface charge density is larger at high pH domain. But adsorbed amount of the silica having low surface charge density is larger at low pH domain.
Semiconductor industry demands decrease in line/space dimensions of IC substrates. Particularly for IC substrates for CPU, line/space dimensions below $10{\mu}m/10{\mu}m$ are expected to be used in production since 2014. Conventional production technologies (SAP, etc.) based on photolithography are widely agreed to be reaching capability limits. To address this limitation, the embedded circuit fabrication technology using laser ablation has been recently developed. In this paper, we used a nanosecond UV laser and a picosecond UV laser to fabricate embedded circuit patterns into a buildup film with $SiO_2$ powders for IC substrate. We conducted SEM and EDS analysis to investigate surface quality of the embedded circuit patterns. Experimental results showed that due to higher recoil pressure, picosecond UV laser ablation of the buildup film generated a better surface roughness.
The advantage of using lasers for through silicon via (TSV) drilling is that they allow higher flexibility during manufacturing because vacuums, lithography, and masks are not required; furthermore, the lasers can be applied to metal and dielectric layers other than silicon. However, conventional nanosecond lasers have disadvantages including that they can cause heat affection around the target area. In contrast, the use of a picosecond laser enables the precise generation of TSVs with a smaller heat affected zone. In this study, a comparison of the thermal and crystallographic defect around laser-drilled holes when using a picosecond laser beam with varing a fluence and repetition rate was conducted. Notably, the higher fluence and repetition rate picosecond laser process increased the experimentally recast layer, surface debris, and dislocation around the hole better than the high fluence and repetition rate. These findings suggest that even the picosecond laser has a heat accumulation effect under high fluence and short pulse interval conditions. To eliminate these defects under the high speed process, the CDE (chemical downstream etching) process was employed and it can prove the possibility to applicate to the TSV industry.
The effects of density and soil nutrient regime on competition between individuals in pure and mixed populations of two annuals. Chenopodium album and Digitaria sanguinalis were investigated at the level of enegy allocation. Seedling emergence of two species was extremely high (>90%) in both pure and mixed culture irrespective of the density and nutrient regime, but percentage of seedling establishment or fertile plant became gradually low with increasing density owing to 'self-thinning'. The mean plant dry weight was significantly reduced with increasing density and decreasing soil fertility. The dry matter production of D. sanguinalis in mixture was markedly greater than in pure culture under medium and high density. Also, as considered the number of seed production as reproductive allocation, relationship between them and the number of seed production per plant showed a similar tendency. Therefore, these results indicated that D. sanguinalis had a greater competitive advantage than C. album and energy allocations to variious organs were regulated by plastic response rather than determined genetically.
The purpose of this study was to improve the accuracy of effective atomic number (EAN) and relative electron density (RED) using a polynomial-based calibration method using dual-energy CT images. A phantom composed of 11 tissue-equivalent materials was acquired with dual-energy CT to obtain low- and high-energy images. Using the acquired dual-energy images, the ratio of attenuation of low- and high-energy images for EAN was calibrated based on Stoichiometric, Quadratic, Cubic, Quartic polynomials. EAN and RED were extracted using each calibration method. As a result of the experiment, the average error of EAN using Cubic polynomial-based calibration was minimum. Even in the RED image extracted using EAN, the error of the Cubic polynomial-based RED was minimum. Cubic polynomial-based calibration contributes to improving the accuracy of EAN and RED, and would like to contribute to accurate diagnosis of lesions in CT examinations or quantification of various materials in the human body.
Zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZICs) have recently been spotlighted as energy storage devices due to their high energy and high power densities. However, despite these merits, ZICs face many challenges related to their cathode materials, activated carbon (AC). AC as a cathode material has restrictive electrical conductivity, which leads to low capacity and lifetime at high current densities. To overcome this demerit, a novel boron (B) doped AC is suggested herein with improved electrical conductivity thanks to B-doping effect. Especially, in order to optimize B-doped AC, amounts of precursors are regulated. The optimized B-doped AC electrode shows a good charge-transfer process and superior electrochemical performance, including high specific capacity of 157.4 mAh g-1 at current density of 0.5 A g-1, high-rate performance with 66.6 mAh g-1 at a current density of 10 A g-1, and remarkable, ultrafast cycling stability (90.7 % after 10,000 cycles at a current density of 5 A g-1). The superior energy storage performance is attributed to the B-doping effect, which leads to an excellent charge-transfer process of the AC cathode. Thus, our strategy can provide a rational design for ultrafast cycling stability of next-generation supercapacitors in the near future.
