  • CoCrPt alloy films are attracting wide attention for applications to high-density magnetic recording media and hard magnetic layer in spin valve structure due to their high coercivity and strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Diblock copolymer templates are one of the most promising candidates for nanoscale patterning otherwise inaccessible by lithographic procedures [1]. In this study, we have investigated magnetic properties of Co$\sub$68/Cr$\sub$18/Pt$\sub$14/ nanodot arrays made by self-assembling polystyrene-block-methyl methacrylate ((PS-b-PMMA), (Mn = 82.5 Kg/mol, with a 1.12 polydispersity)) diblock copolymer. • In this paper, a modified fixed-delay tree search with decision feedback(FDTS/DF) for compensation of non-linear distortion in digital magnetic recording channels is discussed. Since the nonlinear distortion, which becomes significant as recording density increases, is generally well modeled by the discrete Volterra series, the proposed equlizer is composed of a nolinear feedforward filter, a linear feedback filter, and a nonlinear distorton table, the values of which are determined by considering the effect of nonlinear distortion due to future data as well as the previous and current one. At the decision stage of FDTS, a path minimizing the branch metric is chosen by using the previously detected values, current predicted value, and future predicted value. We compare the performance of the linear FDTS/DF, the previous nonlinear FDTS/DF, and the proposed nonlinear FDTS/DF by computer simulation, and confirm that the proposed one chieves the best performance at high-density recording.

  • Noise predictive maximum likelihood(NPML) detector embeds noise prediction/whitening process in branch metric calculation of Viterbi detector and improves the reliability of branch metric computation. Therefore, PRML detector with a noise predictor achieves some performance improvement and has an advantage of low complexity. This thesis random sequences are applied to linear channel. In perpendicular magnetic recording density KP=2.5, NP(121)ML and NP(1221)ML detection system which is based on a noise predictive PR-equalized signal are evaluated by the Performance through a computing simulation. Therefore, NPML systems are implemented and are verified by VHDL.

  • Perpendicular patterned magnetic media have been regarded as a prime candidate to achieve an ultra-high magnetic recording density of over 1 Tera-bits/$inch^2$. Patterned magnetic media with nanoscale patterns have been fabricated using various nanopatterning technologies. We focused on the two technical issues of nanoinjection molding technology. Firstly, we have investigated a cost-effective method to fabricate metallic stamps. Secondly, we focused on the analysis of nanoinjection molding with passive heating, where the replication of 50 nm nanopillar arrays was successful. The effect of the thermal insulation layer on the replication quality was examined by analytical and experimental methods. Finally, we deposited a magnetic layer on a injection molded nanopillars and measured. Our methodology can provide cost-effective mass-production for patterned magnetic media.

  • We report Optically-Detected Magnetic Resonance (ODMR) study on Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. The experiment can easily be conducted with basic optics and microwave components. A diamond crystal having a high-density NV center is suitable for the ODMR study. The magnetic field dependence of ODMR spectrum allowed us to determine the orientation of the diamond crystal. In addition, we measured the variation of the ODMR spectrum as a function of the excitation laser power. Thermal heating induced by optical absorption caused the monotonic decrease of zero field splitting. The contrast of the ODMR peak, however, increased and, then, began to decrease, indicating the optimal laser power for recording the ODMR spectrum.

  • For heat-assisted magnetic recording, magnetization reversal probabilities of nano-Pt/MnSb multilayer film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy under thermal pulse activation were investigated numerically by solving the Landau-Lifshift Gilbert Equation. Magnetic parameters of nano-Pt/MnSb multilayer were used with anisotropy energy of $3{\times}10^5$ erg/cc and saturation magnetization of 2100 G, which offer more than 10 y data stability at room temperature. Scheme of driven magnetic field and thermal pulse on writing mechanism was designed closely to real experiment. This study found that the chosen material is potential to be used as a high density magnetic storage that requires low writing field less than two-hundreds Oersted through definite heating and cooling interval. The possibility of writing data with a zero driven magnetic field also became an important result. Further study is recommended on the thickness of media and thermal pulse design as the essential parameters of the reversal magnetization.

  • In 1957, the first magnetic disk drive compatible with a movable head was introduced as an external file memory device for computer system. Since then, magnetic disks have been improved by increasing the recording density, which has brought about the development of a high performance thin film magnetic head. The thin film magnetic head has a magnetic circuit on a ceramic substrate using IC technology. The physical property of the substrate material is very important because it influences the tribology of head/disk interface and also manufacturing process of the head. $Al_{2}O_{3}$-TiC ceramics, so called ALTIC, is known to be one of the best substrate materials which satisfies this property requirement. Even though the head is not in direct contact with the disk, frequent instantaneous contacts are unavoidable due to its high rotating speed and the close gap between them. This may cause damage in the magnetic recording media and, thus, it is very important that the magnetic head has a good wear resistance. $Al_{2}O_{3}$-TiC ceramics has an excellent tribological property in head/disk interface. Manufacturing process of thin film head is similar to that of IC, which requires extremely smooth and flat surface of the substrate. The substrate must be readily sliced into the heads without chipping. $Al_{2}O_{3}$-TiC ceramics has excellent machineability and mechanical properties. $Al_{2}O_{3}$-TiC ceramics was first developed at Nippon Tungsten Co. as cutting tool materials in 1968, which was further developed to be used as the substrate materials for thin film head in collaboration with Sumitomo Special Metals Co., Ltd. in 1981. Today, we supply more than 60% of the substrates for thin film head market in the world. In this paper, we would like to present the sintering process of $Al_{2}O_{3}$-TiC ceramics and its property in detail.

  • Hybrid type slim tilt actuator and 6-wire supported are developed for DVD recording in the optical disc drive of notebook PC, which can compensate the inclination of disc and objective lens. The hybrid actuator uses the actuating method of moving coil in the focus and track direction and that of moving magnet in the tilt direction. Comparing with 6-wire supported actuator and hybrid type actuator, we can choose an actuator for slim super combo pickup. Two actuator are designed through the modal analysis and magnetic field analysis and experimental results shows dynamic characteristics. Finally, it is verified that the actuator can compensate the disc tilt of ${\pm}0.4^{\circ}$.

  • Vibration problems in the Hard Disk Drive which is magnetic recording device have been raised gradually while HDD is required high density and low access time. As a typical thing, lateral bending or sway mode of supension causes tracking error, and therefore it is necessary to identify the accurate vibration characteristics of that mode. In this study, as the solution of vibration problem, decoupling sway mode and vicinity mode is dealt with. Shifting sway mode to high frequency region is studied.

  • Thermally-assisted magnetic recording (TAMR) is a potentially promising approach to increase the storage density of hard disk drive (HDD). However, TAMR has some issues such as temperature effects, media problems, thermal deformation and light delivery. In this research, we focused on light delivery. One of the powerful methods to deliver the light from laser diode to recording medium is the use of an optical fiber and a specially designed prism. However, the TAMR with optical fiber may have some flyability problems induced by the mounted optical fiber and prism. Also, the TAMR suspension using an optical fiber has high vertical and pitch stiffness. Therefore, p-torque is greatly increased by the optical fiber. Also, flying height (FH) of the slider with TAMR suspension can be largely changed by p-torque. Therefore, in this paper, we focus on the pitch static attitude (PSA) tolerance and the FH by PSA of the TAMR suspension. The FH is investigated using various errors and the PSA tolerance for TAMR suspension is proposed.
