In this study, the characteristics of the experimentally produced high N-high Cr bearing stainless steels are discussed as a part of applications of materials for FGD (Fuel Gas Desulfurization) system of thermal power plants or for power plants using seawater as coolant. Corrosion resistance of developed alloys is especially investigated in detail. Corrosion characteristics of vacuum melted cast are shown to be superior to that of air melted one. From the viewpoint of CPT, It is estimated that the differences of corrosion resistance are $21.8^{\circ}C{\sim}24.6^{\circ}C$ at PRE 40 and $8^{\circ}C{\sim}12.4^{\circ}C$ at PRE 50, and the gaps becomes bigger as the PRE values are lower. In the evaluation of corrosion resistance in alloy A2501, Z3101, and A3301 according to Cr concentration, alloy A3301 shows a deviation from the general tendency in chloride solutions. It has relatively high PRE value as 48.6, but it has relatively poor pitting resistance. It is, however, difficult to observe a specific phase except ferrite in microstructure analysis and neither detects special phase such as sigma phase.
This study investigates the resistance of sustainable ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) on steel reinforcement corrosion. For enhancing the sustainability of UHPC, concrete mixes were prepared with ordinary Portland cement main binder, and mixes with moderate to high percentages of blast furnace cement (CEM III), fly ash (FA), and slag cement as partial replacements of the full quantity of the used cement. Linear polarization resistance technique was employed to estimate the electrochemical behavior of the concrete specimens. Results showed that the compressive strength and the resistance of steel to corrosion in marine environments can be enhanced by improving the sustainability of UHPC through incorporation of CEM III, FA, and slag cement. FA replacement of up to 50% with the addition of 15% SF content produced better compressive strength and steel corrosion resistance than slag cement whether with the use of ordinary Portland cement or blast furnace cement as the main binder.
The corrosion of silver amalgam is regarded as one of major causes in the failures of dental amalgam restorations. To evaluate the corrosion resistance of dental amalgam alloys, electrochemical tests such as potential and polarization measurement were used widely. But these commonly used methods have not provided the sufficient informations on relative resistance of amalgam to corrosion. In this experiment, the corrosion currents were measured using electronic potentiostat to compare some commercial dental amalgam alloys. All alloys were triturated in a amalgamator and condensed into a mold described in A.D.A. Specification No. 1 to produce cylinder form specimens of 4mm diameter by 5mm long. After specimen kept for 1 week at $37^{\circ}C$, each specimen was embedded in epoxy resin. The surfaces of specimens were then polished with a emery paper, diamond dust, and $Al_2O_3$. These specimens were immersed in artifical saliva kept at $37^{\circ}C$, and currents of each specimen were measured for 24 hours at 0.0volt (SCE). The author obtained conclusions as follows: 1. High copper amalgam showed superior resistance against corrosion to conventional amalgam, but a pellet form of high copper amalgam seemed to be susceptible to corrosion. 2. In lathe-cut alloys, fine-cut had superior resistance against corrosion to regular-cut. 3. Non-zinc conventional amalgam alloys were more resistant to corrosion than that of zinc containing conventional amalgam alloys. 4. In both of high copper and conventional amalgams, predispensed forms tended to have better resisitance to corrosion than that of pellet forms.
Although leakage at a low carbon steel pipe made by electrical resistance welding (ERW) was reported due to grooving corrosion, the cause for the corrosion has not yet been cleared. In order to clarify the main cause, failure analysis on the leaked pipe was carried out, followed by metallographic investigation and corrosion test for the various ERW pipe made with different welding heat input. The microstructure, particularly inclusion content, of the weldment is dependant on the welding heat input applied. For an improper low heat input, the amount of inclusion at the weld was high. High inclusion content accelerated grooving corrosion at the weld. It is therefore that welding heat input should be controlled based on the carbon content of the pipe in order to improve the corrosion resistance of the ERW pipe.
Chromium, molybdenum. and nitrogen are very important alloying elements in stainless steels and its effect was approved in pitting resistance equivalent (PRE) equations and many experimental results. However, Cr can improve the corrosion resistance, but facilitate the formation of sigma phase. Also. Mo has the same effect in stainless steels. If Cr and Mo are added at high amount to increase the corrosion resistance of stainless steel, corrosion resistance in annealed alloys can be improved, but in case of welding or aging heat treatment. its resistance will be drastically decreased. In this work, increasing Cr and N contents but decreasing Mo than the commercial alloys made the experimental alloys. Typical alloys are 25Cr-4.5Mo-0.43N alloy, 27Cr-4.7Mo-0.4N alloy, 27Cr-5.3Mo-0.25N alloy, 32Cr-2.6Mo-0.36N alloy. After annealing and aging heat treatment, microstructures, anodic polarization test, and pitting corrosion test were performed. Annealed alloys showed $100^{\circ}C$ of CPT and aged alloys showed the different tendency depending upon Cr and Mo contents(SFI)
Surface composite layers of 1.9~2.9 mm in thickness were fabricated by depositing metamorphic powders on a carbon steel substrate and by irradiating with a high-energy electron beam. In the surface composite layers, 48~64 vol.% of $Cr_{2}B$ or $Cr_{1.65}Fe_{0.35}B_{0.96}$ borides were densely precipitated in the austenite or martensite matrix. These hard borides improved the hardness of the surface composite layer. According to the otentiodynamic polarization test results of the surface composites, coatings, STS304 stainless steel, and carbon steel substrate, the corrosion potential of the surface composite fabricated with 'C+' powders was highest, and its corrosion current density was lowest, while its pitting potential was similar to that of the STS304 steel. This indicated that the overall corrosion resistance of the surface composite fabricated with 'C+' powders was the best among the tested materials. Austenite and martensite phases of the surface composites and coatings was selectively corroded, while borides were retained inside pits. In the coating fabricated with 'C+' powders, the localized corrosion additionally occurred along splat boundaries, and thus the corrosion resistance of the coating was worse than that of the surface composite.

Aluminum alloy is a material that is frequently used in the aerospace and transportation industries due to its high mechanical and corrosion resistance qualities. Unfortunately, aluminum alloys are prone to corrosion, limiting their application in some harsh situations such as when submerged in aqueous environments. The purpose of this study is to investigate how anodizing can increase the corrosion resistance of 6061 Aluminum alloy. The anodizing process was carried out using two different parameters which are voltage (5V, 10V, 15V) and electrolyte sulfuric acid (H2SO4) concentration (0.3M, 0.5M) for 1 hour. The anodized samples were performed using several analyses such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, morphology analysis, and corrosion test. From this study, it is found that the difference in anodizing parameters affects the corrosion resistance of the samples. Sample anodized at 15V, 0.5M gives the best corrosion resistance.
Corrosion resistance is one of the essential properties required in steel bolts. The various types of coatings are used to improve the corrosion resistance of steel bolts. But, roll formed, subsequently Zn alloy electrodeposited and top coated steel bolt easily takes place the white storage stain or white rust under high humidity condition. To investigate the corrosion resistance of roll formed and subsequently the various types of coated steel bolts, their polarization curves were measured by potentio-dynamic tester in this study. Based on the measured polarization curves, the more times of chromate and top coating on roll formed steel bolt, the higher corrosion resistance was shown. The roll formed steel bolt, which was Zn-Ni electro-deposited, two times chromated, one time inorganic top coated, one time organic top coated and annealed, showed the best corrosion resistance.
Anodizing is an electrochemical surface treatment method conferring corrosion resistance and durability by forming a thick anodization film on the metal surface. Aluminum has a long service life and high thermal conductivity and formability, as well as excellent corrosion resistance. Aluminum 3003 alloy has improved formability, strength, and corrosion resistance due to the addition of a small amount of manganese. However, corrosion occurs in seawater and environments polluted with corrosion-inducing substances, which reduce corrosion resistance. Therefore, it is necessary to artificially form a thick anodized film to improve corrosion resistance. In this study, the anodization treatment time was 4 minutes, and voltages of 10 V, 20 V, 30 V, 40 V, 50 V, 60 V, 70 V, 80 V, 90 V, and 100 V were applied. The thickness and pore size of the oxide film increased according to the applied voltage. A barrier film was formed under voltage conditions from 10 V to 50 V, and a porous film was formed under voltage conditions from 60 V to 100 V. After anodizing, coating was applied. Wettability and corrosion resistance were observed before and after coating according to the surface shape and thickness of the oxide film.
The steel for automotive exhaust system needs a good corrosion resistance at the atmosphere of high temperature NaCl. Effect of the alloying elements Me, Ti, Nb on the NaCl induced hot corrosion behavior was investigated at the temperatures between 55$0^{\circ}C$ and 75$0^{\circ}C$ for 18Cr ferritic stainless steels. The weight loss by corrosion has increased linearly with corrosion cycle time, and the corrosion rate has accelerated at higher temperature. The alloying of Mo significantly improved corrosion resistance of the steel and the effect was more pronounced at higher temperature. The addition of alloying elements Ti, Nb have also shown improved corrosion resistance by formation of Ti(C,N) or Nb(C, N) precipitates.
