This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of Sunghyangchungisan (SHCS) on the regulation of vascular tone. Vascular rings isolated from rabbit carotid artery were myographed isometrically in isolated organ baths and the effect of SHCS on contractile activities were determined. SHCS relaxed the arterial rings which were pre-contracted by phenylephrine(PE). The responses to SHCS were partially dose-dependent at concentrations lower than 0.5 mg/ml. When SHCS was applied prior to the exposure to PE, it inhibited the PE-induced contraction by a similar magnitude which was comparable to the relaxation of pre-contracted arterial rings. Washout of SHCS after observing its relaxant effect resulted in a full recovery of PE-induced contractions, indicating that the action mechanism is reversible. The observation that SHCS did not change the $ED_{50}$ of PE on its dose-response curve ruled out the possible interaction of SHCS and ${\alpha}-receptor$. The relaxant effect of SHCS was not affected by removal of endothelium, and pretreatment of the arterial rings with methylene blue or nitro-L-arginine. This results suggest that the action of SHCS is not mediated by endothelium nor soluble guanylate cyclase. SHCS relaxed high $K^{+}-induced$ contractions as well, whereas it failed to relax phorbol ester-induced contractions. When contraction was induced by additive application of $Ca^{2+}$ in arterial rings which were pre-depolarized by high $K^+$ in a $Ca^{2+}-free$ solution, the relaxant effect of SHCS was attenuated by increasing the $Ca^{2+}$ concentration. SHCS, when applied to the arterial rings pre-contracted by PE and then relaxed by nifedipine, a $Ca^{2+}$ channel blocker, did not show additive relaxation. From above results, it is suggested that SHCS relax PE-induced contraction of rabbit carotid artery in an endothelium-independent manner, and inhibition of $Ca^{2+}$ influx may contribute to the underling mechanism.
The fluidic muscle cylinder consist of an air bellows tube, flanges and lock nuts. It's features are softness of material and motion, simplicity of structure, low production cost and high power efficiency. In this study, we carried out the finite element modelling and analysis about the main design variables such as contraction ration and force, diameter increment of fluidic muscle cylinder. On the basis of finite element analysis, the prototype of fluidic muscle cylinder was manufactured and tested. Finally, we compared the results between the test and the finite element analysis.

The mutational falsetto is failure to change from the higher pitched voice of preadolescence to the lower pitched voice of adolescence and adulthood. The one of characteristic findings is contraction of suprahyoid muscles. The large majority of young men with inappropriately high voice have excellent voice therapy prognosis. We have experienced one case of mutational falsetto treated with botulinum toxin injection on suprahyoid muscles. His suprahyoid muscles are contracted markedly simultaneously with each phonation. fundamental frequency$(F_0)$ of his vowel phonation was 332Hz. Extensive voice therapy including manual compression of thyroid notch was ineffective. Forty units of Botox$^{\circledR}$ was injected under the EMG-guidance(20U bilaterally). At seven days post-injection, his voice changed lower than before and at 40 days after procedure, his $F_0$ was 126Hz.
Unlike non-ionic clathrate hydrates stably formed by van der Waals interaction between a guest molecule and a surrounding host framework, ionic clathrate hydrates are stabilized by ionic interaction between an ionic guest molecule and the host water-framework. Here, we firstly described the stable entrapment of the superoxide ions in ${\gamma}$-irradiated $Me_4NOH+O_2$ hydrate. Owing to peculiar direct guest-guest ionic interaction, the lattice structure of ${\gamma}$-irradiated $Me_4NOH+O_2$ hydrate shows significant change of lattice contraction behavior even at relatively high temperature(120K). Particularly, we note that ionic-induced dimensional change is much greater than thermal-induced change. Such findings are expected to provide useful information for a better understanding of unrevealed nature of clathrate hydrate fields.
The Objective of this study is to document the three-dimensional flow in a turbine cascade with Contoured endwall in terms of Stanton number distribution to proposes an appropriate contraction ratio of endwall contouring which show the best performance. This study was numerically performed. The results show that heat transfer coefficient on the contoured endwall which has the height of 15% of the axial chord showed best performance. The numerical method and results in this study can be applied to the design of gas turbine cascade with high performance.
The flow characteristics of ice slurry which was made from $6.5{\%}$ ethylene glycol-water solution flowing in the special pipings including the enlargement, the contraction and the orifice were experimentally investigated. The flow patterns and the pressure drops were measured in acrylic pipes when the fraction of ice were varied from $0\;to\;30{\%}$. The pressure drop behavior of the contraction and the orifice appears to be similar to that of the elbow pipe, since these piping may provide similar frictional resistance to the elbow. In the mean while, the pressure drop increased unexpectedly high with the Ice fraction in the enlargement pipe. It seems that the onset of sharp increase in the pressure drop depends on the flowing time as well as the ice fraction and the flow rate.
The behavior of sand and mold at high temperatures was generally agreed to importantly affect the quality of castings made. By changing water content through 2,4,6 and 8%, and bentonite content through 5,7,9 and 11%, specimens have been made according to the respective composition. Specimens have been subjected to hot compressive strength and thermal expansion at 400, 600, 800 and $1000^{\circ}C$ respectively. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. At each temperature, thermal expansion decreased and hot compressive strength increased with the increase in water content. 2. After thermal expansion was peaked at approximately $1000^{\circ}C$ the contraction and maximum hot compressive strength appeared. 3. At each temperature, maximum hot compressive strength appeared 2%, 4,6% and 8% water content for 7%, 9% and 11% bentonite content respectively. 4. When 2% $H_2O$ was added, though bentonite content was increased, hot compressive strength did not rarely change. 5. Until the thermal expansion was completed the required time was 15-18 minutes at $400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$, and 10-13 minutes at $800^{\circ}C$. At $1000^{\circ}C$, the required time was 7-9 minutes in order to gain the maximum expansion, after that, contraction proceeded during 3-4 minutes before expansion was completed.
Medical magnetic stimulator generates strong magnetic field pulses. Clinical applications of the magnetic pulse are the stimulation of nervous system and the contraction of muscle. The unique source of the strong magnetic pulse is a capacitor-inductor resonator and this inductor generates a strong sinusoidal magnetic pulse by discharging the capacitor with high initial voltage. Continuous muscle contraction needs sequential generation of the magnetic pulses. However, to keep the magnitude of sequential pulses identical, an expensive high-voltage power supply have to support voltage drop of the capacitor between the pulses. A protection circuit between the supply and the resonator is necessary to protect the supply from reverse current caused by capacitor voltage reversal. In this paper, a new circuit structure of the magnetic stimulator adopting a low-frequency fly-back switching is proposed. The new circuit supports sequential pulse generation and allows the reverse current without damage. Performance of the new circuit is examined and a low-cost magnetic stimulator for urinary incontinence therapy is being developed using the presented method.
Objectives : We have examined the relaxational response to the water extract of genus Panax in rat thoracic aorta and mesenteric artery. Methods : Segments of thoracic aorta and mesenteric artery obtained from rats immediately after delivery were mounted in organ baths superfused on a polygraph. Results : We found that the thoracic aorta segments responded to the water extract of genus Panax with a dose-dependent vasorelaxation. At $10^{-5}m$ 5-hydroxytrptamine (5-HT), the maximal contraction force were 94.9% of the maximum KCl-response. At $10^{-5}m$ 5-HT - induced contraction, The contractile response of thoracic aortic rings were inhibited by 54.7%, 36.3% and 31.3% after addition of the high concentration (100 mg/ml) of water extract of Panax ginseng, Panax japonicus and Panax quinquefolium. The contractile response of mesenteric arteries were inhibited by 88.3%, 87.7%, and 70.3% after addition of the high concentration (100 mg/ml) of water extract of Panax ginseng, Panax japonicus and Panax quinquefolium. Conclusions : In conclusion, water extract of genus Panax - induced relaxation in the isolated rat thoracic aorta and mesenteric artery were composed of endothelium - independent relaxation and dose - dependent relaxation.
