  • In this paper, we popose a neural network that detects edges of moving objects in an image using a neural network of hierarchical spatial filter with orientation selectivity. We modify the temporal difference network by adding a self loop to each neuraon cell to reduce the problems of phantom edge detected by the neural network proposed by kwon yool et al.. The modified neural network alleviates the phantom edges of moving objects, and also can detect edges of miving objects even for the noisy input. By computer simulation with real images, the proposed neural netowrk can extract edges of different orientation efficiently and also can reduce the phantom edges of moving objects.

  • In this paper, we propose a neural network which detect edges of different orentation and spatial frequency in arbitrary image data. We constructed the proposed neural network iwth two different types neural network. A diffusion network performs the gaussian operation efficiently by the diffusion process. And the spatial difference network has specially designed connections suitble to detect the contours of a specific oriention. Simulation results showed that the proposed neural network can extract the edges of selected orientation efficiently by applying the neural network to a test pattern and the real image.

  • This paper describes multiple fault diagnosis method in complex system with hierarchical structure. Complex system is divided into subsystem, item, component. For diagnosing this hierarchical complex system, it is necessary to implement special neural network. We introducd to Hierarchical Artificial Neural Network(HANN) for this purpose. HANN consists of four level neural network, first level for symptom classification, second level for item fault diagnosis, third level for component symptom classification, forth level for component fault diagnosis. Each network is multi layer perceptron with 7 inputs, 30 hidden node and 7 outputs trainined by backpropagation. UNIX IPC(Inter Process Communication) is used for implementing HANN with multitasking and message transfer between processes in SUN workstation. We tested HANN in reactor system.

  • In developing an automated surface inspect algorithm, we have designed a hierarchical classifier using neural network. The defects which exist on the surface of cold mill strip have a scattering or singular distribution. We have considered three major problems, that is preprocessing, feature extraction and defect classification. In preprocessing, Top-hit transform, adaptive thresholding, thinning and noise rejection are used Especially, Top-hit transform using local minimax operation diminishes the effect of bad lighting. In feature extraction, geometric, moment, co-occurrence matrix, and histogram ratio features are calculated. The histogram ratio feature is taken from the gray-level image. For defect classification, we suggest a hierarchical structure of which nodes are multilayer neural network classifiers. The proposed algorithm reduced error rate by comparing to one-stage structure.

  • ART (Adaptive Resonance Theory [1]) neural network and its variations perform non-hierarchical clustering by unsupervised learning. We propose a scheme "arboART" for hierarchical clustering by using several ART1.5-SSS networks. It classifies multidimensional vectors as a cluster tree, and finds features of clusters. The Basic idea of arboART is to use the prototype formed in an ART network as an input to other ART network that has looser distance criteria (Ishihara, et al., [2,3]). By sending prototype vectors made by ART to one after another, many small categories are combined into larger and more generalized categories. We can draw a dendrogram using classification records of sample and categories. We have confirmed its ability using standard test data commonly used in pattern recognition community. The clustering result is better than traditional computing methods, on separation of outliers, smaller error (diameter) of clusters and causes no chaining. This methodology is applied to Kansei evaluation experiment data analysis.

  • This paper reports a machine learning approach for image object detection. Object detection and localization in a wild image, such as a STL-10 image dataset, is very difficult to implement using the traditional computer vision method. A convolutional neural network is a good approach for such wild image object detection. This paper presents an object detection application using a convolutional neural network with pretrained feature vector. This is a very simple and well organized hierarchical object abstraction model.

  • In The matching algorithm for automatic packaging of drugs is essential to determine whether the canister can exactly refill the suitable medicine. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical neural network with the upper and lower layers which can perform real-time processing and classification of many types of medicine bottles to prevent accidental medicine disaster. A few number of low-dimensional feature vector are extracted from the label images presenting medicine-bottle information. By using the extracted feature vectors, the lower layer of MLP(Multi-layer Perceptron) neural networks is learned. Then, the output of the learned middle layer of the MLP is used as the input to the upper layer of the MLP learning. The proposed hierarchical neural network shows good classification performance and real- time operation in the test of up to 30 degrees rotated to the left and right images of 100 different medicine bottles.

  • The application of Connectionist expert system using neural network to fault diagnosis of power system is presented and compared with rule-based expert system. Also, the merits of Connectionist model using neural network is presented. In this paper, the neural network for fault diagnosis is hierarchically composed by 3 neural network classes. The whole power system is divided into subsystems, the neural networks (Class II) which take charge of each subsystem and the neural network (Class III) which connects subsystems are composed. Every section of power system is classified into one of the typical sections which can be applied with same diagnosis rules, as line-section, bus-section, transformer-section. For each typical section, only one neural network (Class I) is composed. As the proposed model has hierarchical structure, the great reduction of learning structure is achieved. With parallel distributed processing, we show the possibility of on-line fault diagnosis.

  • In this paper, we propose a hierarchical classifier of object images using neural networks for content-based image classification. The images for classification are object images that can be divided into foreground and background. In the preprocessing step, we extract the object region and shape-based texture features extracted from wavelet transformed images. We group the image classes into clusters which have similar texture features using Principal Component Analysis(PCA) and K-means. The hierarchical classifier has five layes which combine the clusters. The hierarchical classifier consists of 59 neural network classifiers learned with the back propagation algorithm. Among the various texture features, the diagonal moment was the most effective. A test with 1000 training data and 1000 test data composed of 10 images from each of 100 classes shows classification rates of 81.5% and 75.1% correct, respectively.

  • To improve classification accuracy in this paper, we proposed an algorithm for the chromosome image reconstruction in the image preprocessing part. also we proposed the pattern classification method using the hierarchical multilayer neural network(HMNN) to classify the chromosome karyotype. It reconstructed chromosome images for twenty normal human chromosome by the image reconstruction algorithm. The four morphological and ten density feature parameters were extracted from the 920 reconstructed chromosome images. The each combined feature parameters of ten human chromosome images were used to learn HMNN(Hierarchical Multilayer Neural Network) and the rest of them were used to classify the chromosome images. The experimental results in this paper were composed to optimized HMNN and also obtained about 98.26% to recognition ratio.
