  • There is now growing evidence that psoriasis, like other inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, is a systemic disorder that is associated with enhanced atherosclerosis and risk of coronary artery disease. Erythrodermic psoriasis is a severe form of psoriasis that can be challenging to treat, and carries with it substantial morbidity and an increased risk of mortality compared with other forms of psoriasis. We experienced a case of an erythrodermic psoriasis patient with heart disease. The patient was suffering from whole body erythema, scale, edema and pain. She was admitted to the hospital, and herbal medication, acupuncture, herbal wet dressing and herbal ointment were applied. After 10 days, her edema and pain were remarkably improved, and the patient was discharged and treated through the outpatient clinic. Almost all symptoms were improved after approximately 3 months. We suggest that herbal medicines can be a choice for severe psoriasis patients and can also be helpful for cardiovascular disease.

  • 'Arirang', an early-flowering pure white gladiolus with purple core, was released by the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science (NIHHS) in 1998. The selection was derived from the cross between the progenies of the early flowering dark orange 'Arianne' and bright red domestic cultivars 'Hongkwang'. The breeding was conducted in 1993 and finally selected in 1998 after five (5) years (1994 to 1998) of experimentation. 'Arirang' is a cut flower with bright white color petals and purple core which exhibited early flowering and vigor without stem bending. These can be cultivated in areas or regions with strong winds during summer. 'Arirang' has a very firm growth form and sturdy branches which do not bend when planted in the open fields. Likewise, the plant had high tolerance to flooding and resistance hence could grow vigorously in open areas. It is a fast- growing plant which exhibits high corm production rate. 'Arirang' had a 10.5 cm wide flower and 140 cm plant height. During summer, the average number of days to flowering was recorded at 75 days of 'Arirang'. Top dressing must be conducted once or twice during corm production to enhance corm quality and quantity.

  • Hydrogels from a mixture of poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), ${\kappa}$-carrageenan and microorganism fermentation celluose were prepared by $^{60}Co$ gamma-ray irradiation. PVP and ${\kappa}$-carrageenan were mixed with the different ratios. Microorganism fermentation celluose were added to the mixture of PVP and ${\kappa}$-carrageenan to evaluate the effect of microorganism fermentation celluose on the gel strength. The gel strength of the hydrogel was evaluated for application of a wound dressing. The results showed that gelation and gel strength were increased with increasing the content of the microorganism fermentation celluose.

  • Irradiation has been recognized as a highly suitable tool to aid in the formation of hydrogel. The radiation process has various advantage, such as easy process control and the lack of necessity for initiators and crosslinker. In this study, the hydrogel containing the citrus fermentation gel for the wound healing were successfully synthesized. The strength of hydrogel was increased as a function of a increasing the concentration of citrus and the irradiation doses. In addition, this hydrogel have been evaluated by the cytotoxicity and animal experiment.

  • Land application of animal manure, such as pig slurry(PS), has been considered as valuable organic source to supply necessary nutrients for crop growth. On the other hand, little information is available on the effect of consecutive application of PS on agricultural soils. This study was conducted to evaluate the influence on change in soil chemical properties and yield of Chinese cabbage in soils amended with slurry composting and bio-filtration pig slurry (SCB) for four consecutive crop cultivations (2007-2008). Among total application rates required, a basal fertilizer (35%) was applied with SCB or chemical fertilizer (CF). The CF was applied as a side dressing was applied in all treatments. There was no significant effect of SCB and CF on Chinese cabbage yield during four cropping seasons. In addition, soluble sugar, vitamin C contents and yields of Chinese cabbage between SCB and CF did not show statistically significant difference. During the experiment, soil chemical properties between SCB and CF treatment showed similar pattern, however, the contents of exchangeable sodium (Na) in soil has been increased (P<0.05) since the second cropping season because of higher Na contents in SCB. Therefore, the use of SCB as a substitute of CF is available for growth and yield of chinese cabbage while its long-term application might leads to an accumulation of Na in soil.

  • The purpose of this study is to report the effect of Korean medicine treatment on a pressure sore in a stroke patient. An 86-year-old female patient diagnosed with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage in the right basal ganglia had symptoms of left hemiparesis, dysphagia, and a 4.5-cm-by-2.5-cm left trochanteric pressure sore. Clinical outcomes were measured using the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP) pressure injury stages, the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) pressure ulcer stages, and the Braden scales. Treatment with Korean medicine, including acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dressing therapy, significantly improved the trochanteric pressure sore, as reflected by a NPUAP stage change from III to I, an AHCPR stage change from III to I, and a Braden scale change from 13 to 18. These findings suggest that Korean medicine treatment may be effective to treat pressure sores in stroke patients.

  • It has been known that the eczema herpeticum is the one of most severe skin manifestation of external herpetic infection. It is developed by skin infection of Herpes simplex Virus(HSV) that superimposed on children with atopic dermatitis, and this could be fatal. The secondary bacterial infection happens frequently in eczema herpeticum. Staphylococcus aureus is the most frequently isolated aerobic strain. The important point of treatment of eczema herpeticum is the immediate start of systemic antiviral treatment and use of antibiotics to decrease the secondary infection. We report two cases of severe eczema herpeticum after herb medical treatment in atopic dermatitis. They have been improved after systemic acyclovir and antibiotic therapy with burn dressing.
