  • As the demand for the lap-top computer has been increased, most users ask quiet environment to work comfortably. Therefore, noise problems of an ODD are of great interest. For the high speed ODD, the flow induced noise is caused by the turbulent flow[1], which is known to be a major source of overall noise of a slim type ODD. In this study, we introduce a new attempt to reduce the noise level using the concept of Helmholtz resonator[2].The experimental analysis is carried out for several cases at different resonance frequencies and different hole patterns. The results show reductions in the noise level from the acoustic noise absorption point of view.

  • Flow traveling over a cavity opening forms a vortex due to unstable shear layer and induces an aerodynamic pressure excitation from the diffusion of the vortex convecting out of the trailing edge of the opening. The interaction between the excitation force and the cavity response sustains resonance in the resonator(cavity) and locked-in vortex shedding at the leading edge of the opening. The aerodynamic excitation force can be described from the diffusion of the vortex over the trailing edge and the level of its diffusivity is related to the strength of vorticity seeded at the loading edge. In this study, the control scheme of the internal pressure oscillation was proposed from regulating the vorticity at the leading edge by use of an oscillating spoiler. It was found that the relative motion between the spoiler and the air mass at the cavity opening influenced vorticity strength and the control was achieved by direct feedback of the cavity pressure fluctuation to the actuator.

  • This paper describes a study of the influence of a dynamically flexible building structure on pressures inside and net pressures on the roof of low-rise buildings with a dominant opening. It is shown that dynamic interaction between the flexible roof and the internal pressure results in a coupled system that is similar to a two-degree-of-freedom mechanical system consisting of two mass-spring-damper systems with excitation forces acting on both the masses. Two resonant modes are present, the natural frequencies of which can readily be obtained from the model. As observed with quasi-static building flexibility, the effect of increased dynamic flexibility is to reduce the first natural frequency as well as the corresponding peak value of the admittance, the latter being the result of increased damping effects. Consequently, it is found that the internal and net roof pressure fluctuations (RMS coefficients) are also reduced with dynamic flexibility. This model has been validated from experiments conducted using a cylindrical model with a leeward end flexible diaphragm, whereby good match between predicted and measured natural frequencies, and trends in peak admittances and RMS responses with flexibility, were obtained. Furthermore, since significant differences exist between internal and net roof pressure responses obtained from the dynamic flexibility model and those obtained from the quasi-static flexibility model, it is concluded that the quasi-static flexibility assumption may not be applicable to dynamically flexible buildings. Additionally, since sensitivity analyses reveal that the responses are sensitive to both the opening loss coefficient and the roof damping ratio, careful estimates should therefore be made to these parameters first, if predictions from such models are to have significance to real buildings.

  • Due to the interaction between main oxidizer flow and the wall injected flow resulting from the regression process, a specific time characteristics identified in the frequency spectrum of streamwise velocity is generated in the hybrid rocket motor. In order to understand the response of the turbulent flow to two different types of external momentum forcing, LES analysis was conducted without considering the combustion. It turns out that both concentrated and distributed forcings do not lead to the disastrous resonance phenomenon. Energy contents are enhanced due to the added momentum but the peak frequency was not modified in the turbulent flow near the end of the rocket motor. Natural frequency of the flow system should be taken into account to further pursue the instability issue by using external forcing.

  • Recently, to realize sound-absorbing structures, we have to insert sound-absorbing materials into wall. These shapes are taken limitations because sound-absorbing materials should be fixed. Therefore, the sound absorption is changed by environment that used the sound-absorbing materials. On the other hand, we will take same effect without sound-absorbing material, if we change the shape of wall to sound absorbing structure. If we use this sound absorbing structure, we can get benefits by removing limitation of materials. Therefore we suggest perforated plate for effective sound-absorbing structure. We confirmed the function of sound-absorption of this structure using equivalent property. Then, we found the similarity between perforated plate and resonator. Also, we verify these theories through computer simulation by FEM(Finite Element Method). Finally, we validated that perforated plate has function of sound absorption without sound-absorbing material. This perforated plate is used for sound-absorbing material of buildings and transportations such as vehicle, train etc. Also, these results could be further used basic tool for design of sound-absorption structure.
